The Gamecube was top tier for its gen. At 480p it could hang with the Xbox minus some shader effects. At higher resolutions the Xbox pulls away (I don't think Gamecube had any games that ran at a higher resolution but I could be wrong) but the Gamecube was a good deal ahead of Dreamcast or PS2 when it comes to computational performance. Granted both the Xbox and GC came out later than those other two but they where the top two systems of that generation and rather close in performance on all but HD displays.
There are other benefits to using a LAN adapter aside from connection speed, stability for example. Suggesting people don't use them is not good advice.
I prefer to use ethernet on stationary devices so I can save the bandwith of the wifi signal for devices where wireless really makes sense. Like Smartphones, Notebooks, Handhelds.
Whenever I put in a new game inside my Wii U it plays instantly most of the time, without updates needed. However, pop a new game into the PS3/4 and you can expect a lot of waiting time before playing due to updates having to download (or system update no. 3154). So your conclusion works the other way around for me!
Robbin Wiegman It's funny...during that 90-minute Wii U update wait, I decided to play a PS3 game instead. Turned the console on, and it prompts me to update. I start the update, then switch to the PS4 -- same thing, another update! It was hysterical. (The PlayStation updates only ended up taking 10 minutes.)
Robbin Wiegman I feel you, I shit you not, I bought my ps3 in december 2012, way into it's lifespan. I bought it a saturday in the afternoon, I decided to pay for PS+ so I could have Super Street Fighter IV and a bunch of other games as I only had GT5. Downloading the games took forever, with the firmware updates and the software updates, I wasn't able to play until the friday, otherwise the console would prompt me to update all the time midgame. I almost threw through the window.
This Does Not Compute There was only a couple of long updates for Wii U, or only one (System in that case), about games, well, im playing alot of SSB4 instead other new games that I have (bought Bayonetta recently and I haven't even ripped the plastic on the game case :O too addicted to SSB4)
Actually you can still find the Wii LAN Adapter here store.nintendo.com/ng3/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?productId=prod10279 Long story short,it was never discontinued. It's just only available through Nintendo.
Just a heads up disabling DHCP and manually inputting all the setting when on LAN will allow the Wii U to join the network slightly faster when starting up the console from fully off as DHCP will add extra time I found this can actually at times help the Wii U menus load faster from a fresh boot when connected to the Nintendo network as I found the fastest way to run the Wii U is fully offline but thats no fun due to no online play
The problem here is that the Wii LAN adapter is 10Base-T, and this means that it's limited to 10Mbps max speed. As this is the only LAN adapter for both the Wii and the Wii U, you'll never get more than this except if Nintendo releases a new adapter.
Actually, it's 100Base-TX max, the Wii just didn't use that mode. Apparently, Wii U games will use 100Base-T however: _The Wii LAN Adapter (Ethernet) allows players to connect their Wii U™ or Wii™ console to a wired high-speed local area network (LAN). The Wii LAN Adapter is compatible with ADSL, CATV internet, and FTTH (optical) connections and conforms to 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX standards. When using Wii software (disc software, WiiWare, Wii Channels) with 100BASE-TX network devices, the connection will be the same speed as with 10BASE-T devices._ Also check that your modem/router isn't accidentally throttling your Wii U's port to 10Base-T, some modems do that.
I cant even play Splatoon over wifi. And yes, I do have shitty internet speeds. So I'm bought an Ethernet adapter. Hope it increases upload and doesn't give me that error message "connection unstable".
In my opinion there is a good reason to use the Wii Lan Adapter, instead Wifi : GAMECUBE LAN PARTIES and NINTENDONT. Lets say You have 4 players at a Gamecube or Wii and other 4 Players at a WIiU, if you try to use WIFI, the connection will turn slow with so much data inputs between consoles. Thats why cable connection with Lan Parties is the best way to go. You can connect as much players by console the game could handle and still with work whitout breaking the experience. Mario Kart Double Dash is the game to test this. It can support up to 8 Karts , but since each Kart can be drived by 2 players together, the max number of players the game support is 16. No problems with a LAN adapte and cable even Connecting More and different consoles like a GC vs Wii vs WiiU. But Instead if you try to use Wifi, there are very high chance you will find problems just getting close to 6 or 8 players at the party, according you connection.
Tusen hjertelig takk for at du gav meg informasjon som fikk meg til å unngå anskaffelse av en Wii U LAN Adapter :-) (Thank you very much for providing me with information that prevented me from acquiring a Wii U LAN Adapter) :-)
the best solution for the download speed is to go ahead and launch the game. It will download in the background while you are playing it and install on the next launch.
don't bother these lan adapters do nothing. I have an official Nintendo lan adapter it does nothing. in splatoon I still get lag still get slow down and still get disconnects. still get internet errors. waste of money. there is a reason you cant find these in your local game shops is because they don't do anything.
I did a test with a fresh start on my Wii U once with it connected to WPA2 WiFi and once with WPA WiFi the WPA2 WiFi was far far slower at downloading all stuff, seems like the wii u cant fully handle WP2 encryption at full speed and is slowing the speeds down, so unless you want to lower your WiFi security a LAN Adapter is probably the best thing to get.
Wow talk about WRONG! I have my Wii U on the USB ethernet LAN but not a nintendo branded one. I get 1200 Mbps down and 4 Mbps up. I think this guy knows less about IT than he thinks. My internet service is 500MB down by 15MB up.
The connection is a lot better with a LAN adapter but sometimes it doesn't recognize it and I have to unplug it, plug it back in and restart my Wii U over and over until it works....
what if i have a wii u in one room and a wii u in another room and both have LAN adapters and i plug a network cable into the one LAN adapter and plug the other end into the other LAN adapter so that the two are directly connected to each other. Any game can be played like this?
Not sure what you're complaining about, the updates aren't that bad, if you wanna play local, just cancel it, it gives you the option unlike the Xbox. And you look like you're shocked the entire time lol. I mean, if you have crappy wifi, the LAN adapter isn't necessarily the only solution. How about just fixing your wifi so it doesn't suck??
+Dami Nooki SPOT ON. Finally someone realises that a bad wifi antenna will definitely kill it. And it doesn't have to necessarily be going bad either; if it's just plain slow for gaming from day 1, you're screwed.
Don't forget that USB really isn't that great for preformance. USB 1.1 and 2.0 kinda suck. USB didn't really become good until 3.0. If Nintendo made the Wii U an onboard LAN adapter built into the chipset you would be getting the full 100 mbps.
+RyGuy 300 it might be usb 3.0 which isn't supported by the wii u. You need one that is usb 2.0 that doesn't require software installation to make it work. There are lists of compatible adapters on the internet, you'll find them if you look.
I get 8 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up on average on my Wii U 5.5.3 on WiFI yet my LAN adapter gives me 10 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up on average. I have a RF-GWII008 split on a Amazon Basic USB 3.0 powered hub sharing with my external hard drives. Speed test done with bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
Can somebody please direct me to a USB2 to gigabit ethernet adapter supported by the Wii U? I want a gigabit one. USB2 supports greater than 100mbps so it should be worth it and I have faster than 100mbps internet connection. USB2 can handle about 288mbps. Thanks.
Mine is so fucking slow!! The results: Download: 919 Kbps Upload: 363 Kbps This is why I can barely ever play games like Smash online normally! I hate the internet here at home so fucking much, I wish I could speed everything up! Ughh...
+Etika's Hair honestly you'd still complain if you had hour internet. Maybe not at first, but It'll come. I honestly didn't know there could be any slower internet than hours, I'm very sorry to hear.
I'm slightly over... and that's my ADSL, lol. This is also why consoles may never go full digital; ISPs need to catch up first before that can happen... And Australian ones in particular, they overcharge for somewhat poor service, depending on where you are.

+Jared Armbruster (Jayrod64) Thanks for the heads up! I ordered one -- I'm a bit curious if it works any better.
+This Does Not Compute Sm4sh runs MUCH better with it because you don't get lag spikes from neighbors wireless signals interfering with you own.
WiFi: 10 Megabit
LAN: 30 Megabit

Now do a test with the Switch. Apparently it helps with that more so. Probably because the software was improved. People use the Wii adapter for it.
@Walther Penne your entitled to that opinion. Sales say otherwise. I ended up getting one and did tests myself.
You do know you can play the games without waiting for the update, right? Just hit B and you can play while it downloads.

I think Nintendo just gimped the network speeds to bare minimum to reduce the load on their servers.
LAN just creates a direct connection to the router creating less lag. I play splatoon and well i get less lag now and have never dc'd from a game
Thanks for making this, I was considering trying this but now I see there's hardly a difference.
LAN is an easy way to boost speeds until you can't extend the cable to reach across your home..
The connection is a lot better with a LAN adapter but sometimes it doesn't recognize it and I have to unplug it, plug it back in and restart my Wii U over and over until it works....

21st Century gaming. Or so I've been told.
The gamecube was more powerful than the ps2 and the dreamcast

LOL. I get that too if mine's playing up, since ISP provided routers are hopeless at forwarding packets efficiently...
Very helpful and interesting. I think that bare minimum philosophy might be Nintendo's downfall .
Explain what you mean by bare minimum
i remember that sakurai recomended to use LAN adpter in SMash Bros direct
Chips07 IM TRYING TO CONNECT IT. BUT THE WII U DOESNT RECOGNIZED IT. I WANT TO FUCKING KICK ASS ON FOR GLORY PLEASEEE.
@@theminer644 i know this comment is 3 years old, but the lan adapter needs to have a certain chipset (ASIX AX88772) for the wii/wiiu to recognize
Just tested my wiiu on wifi with testme. 16.5Mbps download/4.5Mbps upload. Network config must play a part as well.
I only got a plus 0.3mb download and you got 1.3, did you change any settings or what can be The problem?
Don't forget that USB really isn't that great for preformance.

When I tried to download smash bros on my Wii U it took over 3 hours
I like the download wile I'm sleeping option my wii u dose
Thanks
Are you able to go online with wifi
Welp, time to download a 23 gb game with .6 mbps... Onto a notoriously slow flash drive
So what ur trying to say is that, im going to have shitty connection no matter what i do basically?
Invest in a better router or complain to your internet providers until they fix it. That is usually what works for me
I have one made by monoprice. And i cant make it work. I did the same wired connection thing you did. But it still does not work.
+RyGuy 300 it might be usb 3.0 which isn't supported by the wii u. You need one that is usb 2.0 that doesn't require software installation to make it work. There are lists of compatible adapters on the internet, you'll find them if you look.
My wired connection works great with my Wii U
It keeps saying conect your lan cable to one of the usb ports when is already conected to the wii u . Please help
You have to use the adapter that is advertised to function with the Wii u generic adapters won't work
just do ssb4 u will see a huge difference
The game cube was stronger than the ps2..
50mbit and fast in the same sentence :D
network because I downloaded a full 2.5 GB game n it took about 20 minutes
I get 8 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up on average on my Wii U 5.5.3 on WiFI yet my LAN adapter gives me 10 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up on average. I have a RF-GWII008 split on a Amazon Basic USB 3.0 powered hub sharing with my external hard drives. Speed test done with bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

Lol my wiiu is in my bedroom, wifi there sucks,my wifi is not the worse but it kind of sucks a little (thanks italy) and it took almost 15minutes
I have almost 1mbit/s
I'm slightly over... and that's my ADSL, lol.
This is also why consoles may never go full digital; ISPs need to catch up first before that can happen...

Great Love it! very interesting!!
actually just delete this whole thing
