    I too was fortunate enough to have hiked the JMT. 3 of us did it in 2000, 21 years ago, when I was 53…as you can do the math I am 74 and it gives me great pleasure to see these videos of so many people who have experienced this adventure of a lifetime. You did a great job on this video and it allowed me to relive the whole experience…I recently shared someone else’s video with my 13 year old granddaughter and she was blown away by it. She basically said that it was crazy and so was I. But I will always view it as a great accomplishment and one of the highlights of my life. We are part of a relatively small club of people who have shared this wilderness adventure from start to finish. 21 years ago we didn’t have the technology we have today to be able to capture the beautiful scenery and for sure the sounds of the many waterfalls and conversations of the people you run into on the trail. You did a great job in doing that and I thank you for it…not many years after that I too developed “wiring” problems with my heart so I have not been able to do any back packing since I did a 5 day trip with my oldest daughter to the top of Whitney in 2007 at the age of 60. Again, thanks for the memories and I hope you continue to hike and share it with your wife.

      Jim, thank you so much for your kind words. It's amazing how your feelings about this experience are the same as ours- "the adventure of a lifetime", and "the highlight of your life". It truly was. We've done may hikes before this one, and have done some since, but the feeling you get while hiking this entire trail is something very special indeed. So great to hear from such an experienced hiker, we appreciate it. We're also happy to hear you share your love for the trail with your family. We're working on another video of a trip we took with our daughter and her fiancé this past summer, and also just posted one from July up on the JMT. Take care Jim, and thank you again for your thoughtful post.

    I enjoyed your video. I did TM to OV in Sept 2016 for my 67th birthday, then OV to Whitney and Whitney Portal for my 68th birthday. My total time on trail was closer to 40 days, since I went so slowly, and the day that I was to do the Golden Stair case, my R knee was giving me problems, so I had to end it at OV for that year. I love re-living it by watching the videos of other hikers. Thank you.

    Sad to hear that its so hard to get a permit. Plus you have to be really smart preparing the trip,the food planning,the resupplies, what trails and what campsites you have to camp at, the bear canister, the time you have to take off of work to do it, the slim chances if getting accepted. The cost of ultralight backpacking, the cost to drive there, the buses and figuring that out. I've hike many day trails and a few overnight trips and have very good gear. But this is overwhelming on where to start and plan all that. Oh well I'll stick to Mt. Whitney and smaller trails I guess if I can even do those hah.

      You’re right... it’s hard to get the SOBO permit. We got lucky on our 41st try (rolling lotto)😅 All of the research was actually VERY fun to us! We watched awesome JMT videos, read books, became members of the FB JMT pages... that to us was part of the fun of the whole experience of hiking the trail!!😄. It honestly wasn’t too confusing once you start diving into it!👍🏻

    Thank you for capturing and sharing this trip of a lifetime. I'm grateful that you finished in good health and I got to relive the highlights here. At 58 years young I recently added this trip to my bucket list. I heard the lottery picks are getting harder each year, so I'm going to enroll in 2021, hoping I get picked. If not, I will keep trying, health permitting of course. I would also like to hike the Wonderland Trail some day and may do that next year if not picked for the JMT, as continued good health is not guaranteed. ;>D
    Between 2017 and now I section hiked the northern half of the AT, over 1,000 miles! Other than the increased elevation and dryer weather out west, I think I know what to expect and have most of my gear dialed in. I just read "Plan & Go | John Muir Trail" on Kindle and have a exercise routine involving jogging, yoga weekdays and trail conditioning most weekends with a 20-30 lb pack on rugged trails.
    P.S. I'm a Nature Videographer by hobby and feel you deserve a solid A for this production if rating it on an armature level. It's borderline semi-pro in many parts. With audio volume issues corrected I would give it an A+. The music is excellent! Keep up the good work. I will sub to your channel for sure.

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you enjoyed it! :) And thank you for your kind words. I hope you're able to get a permit this year, and that things open up for easier resupply!
      Wow, 1000 miles on the AT sounds like a great experience! I'm sure you'll do fine on this one. It really doesn't take long to get used to the elevation.
      Thanks you also for your score on the video :) We really tried to make it nice and keep it short as possible, but it's very hard with so much beauty. Still don't understand the audio issues, as we never raised it with the music, but since it's out first real project, I guess we need to learn to raise it on the speaking parts so that the overall volume can stay reasonably low. We'll be making another video soon from a trip back there for a section loop. Hope you watch and let us know what you think!
      Happy trails, and good luck on being picked for the permit!

I will be starting (northbound from Cottonwood Lakes) on 7/26 with my 18-year old grandson and am getting excited! It appears that you are carrying a Garmin Inreach mini. I cannot determine what is more impressive - (1) what you you accomplished on the trail with a lot of high mileage days, (2) your artistic video with a lot of great graphics, or (3) your helpful responses to viewers' questions! Hi, I just watched your video a second time and may use it as a loose template for our journey. I asked earlier about your shoes. Now I'm wondering: Danielle, I saw you blowing up a pink sleeping pad to use one of the last nights, in addition to your Nemo Tensor. Did you bring it along because you sleep cold? So along with the UGQ 0-degree bag you had, you used two pads? I also sleep cold. We are starting August 24, so only a week earlier than your trip. I really like getting a decent night's sleep! And I agree with earlier comments, your video is incredibly helpful. Honestly, just seeing how you handled the ups and downs was reassuring! And of course part of your great success was obviously great preparation and training!! Congrats on that.

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Julie! Actually, the other sleeping pad was the one my brother-in-law used the night after he brought us our resupply on Kearsarge Pass. David’s Nemo had just got punctured the night before, so we grabbed Jake’s pad when he left. I used that one because it was shorter and gave David mine. It definitely wasn’t as insulated as the Nemo (he owes me...haha!)
      Aug. 24th is a great time to start! The weather should be nice and hopefully by that time there won’t be too many mosquitoes around. Thanks again for your kind words and we both wish you the best of luck for a safe and incredible hike!😃

    David & Danielle, what an amazing journey. You are so fortunate to be able to do that together. Awesome job on the video too!! I wanted to ask about some gear. What was your water bottle holder on your pack strap and what was the bag you had on the front of your pack, David. I’d like to try those. Thanks!

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes it really was an incredible experience to do together- we loved it and can’t wait to do it again! 😃 So glad you enjoyed our video! The front pack on my chest is a Z-Packs multi-pak. Very handy, and perfect to hold snacks and the GoPro. Our light little water bottle holders are made by Justin. I’ll look it up, but I believe if you google Justin’s lightweight backpack, or Justin on the trail? Holds a smart water bottle nicely and accessibly. I love the ease of a bladder, but didn’t want to have to empty the pack every time we grab more water, and really didn’t need to carry that much anyway with so much water in the Sierra’s. We used a .750 liter up in the strap for easy access, and a 1 liter on the side of the pack. Oh, and regarding filtering water- we used a sawyer micro squeeze and worked well but I spent a lot of time squeezing. Since then we now use a Katadyn and absolutely LOVE it! So easy and so quick! Our friend from the JMT video “Ove” turned us in to that one. Happy trails! And don’t hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. Take care

      Thanks so much Chris! As for your question... we pretty much used everything we brought, but, I (Danielle) ended up shipping my Nalgene bottle home from VVR. Turned out that the smart water bottles are very durable and didn’t need a back-up. We both shipped our sandals back too because the water crossings were pretty low, but if we were to do it again, would still bring them...you just never know! 😄

    2022 Update: I got a pick for a Sept. 6 start. I declined and opted to complete the last 145 miles of the AT in ME instead. It was an epic hike, culminating w/ a summit of Mt. Katahdin. I re-applied a few weeks ago and got a pick for a June 6 start at Lyell Canyon. I will continue to enter the lottery for later start dates, knowing it will be statistically impossible to get on after July 1. Its already shaping up to be a high snow year, so maybe I wait until after Labor Day to start. I have hiked in snow before and feel that it would not be much fun while combating the sun and high elevation. Regardless, I may climatize for a week at my cousin's house in Boulder (5,328') and rental in Dillon, CO (9,111'). Living in Central CT, I'm at best 500' above sea level.

      That sounds like an awesome hike you did on the AT! Congrats on that! Nice job on securing a permit for June 6, but you’re right… the snow pack out here is so high already and it might be pretty tough to get out of Lyell Canyon and over to Thousand Island Lake. (And over the other passes as well) But who knows?🤞🏻 A start after Labor Day would be good too. Water crossings would be more manageable, snow probably only over 12k (if this weather continues) and no mosquitos!😃. Acclimating is a great idea for sure. (Funny side note… when we visit my cousins in CT (Whethersfield/Enfield areas, when I see a hill, they correct me and call it a mountain!😂) So a short stay in CO would be perfect for you. Good luck on your hike whatever date you’re able to do it and please keep us posted! Happy Trails!😃

    • @chooseoutside8586

      We really liked our Tiger Wall tent on this trip 👍🏻 It’s light, very easy to set up, and for two of us, the UL3 had plenty of room for us, our stuff, & wide pads. Held out the rain well too. We had a UL2 for a single trip, but quickly found out that it’s way too small for two and got the UL3. Couldn’t be happier with it!

    Hands down my fav JMT hike video. I hope to get picked to hike late Aug to mid Sept. How did you arrange that food resupply atop Kearsarg Pass and would 3 days food had been sufficient?

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! That’s the perfect time of the summer to hike the JMT.... we hope you get the “golden ticket”! For the resupply at Kearsarge Pass, we actually gave our resupply box to my brother-in-law before we left and timed it where we would meet with him on that specific date (at the top of the pass - so for sure we couldn’t fall behind schedule). We were lucky to find someone available to do that... it REALLY helped out a lot! I would say 3 1/2 days of food would be enough from that point to the end, but that all would depend on your daily mileage. Happy Trails!
