I just recently got a hemithyroidectomy (yesterday actually) and going under general anesthesia was a bizarre experience for me. I’m 16 years old, and I’ve never had any procedures before so that kind of stuff was all new to me.
If anyone is reading this and you are getting a procedure done, don’t worry! You fall asleep insanely quickly and it feels like no time has passed when you wake up.
If I can do it, so can you! Don’t forget to smile. :)

This perfectly explains my experience. I fell asleep 30 seconds after they injected me with the needle, and woke up after an hour surgery. It felt like time travel to me as 1 hour felt like 30 seconds. The bizzare thing is that it is different from sleeping, because I didn't even remember passing out, or anything for that matter. It's like I completely disconnected from reality for one hour. In contrast, when I sleep, I can usually remember falling asleep and transitioning from light to deep sleep, dreams, etc. With anesthesia, it is complete nothingness that you don't remember. Crazy!

to anyone getting stomach butterflies while watching this when you’re gonna have a surgery soon:
Dont be anxious about it. ur docs have been working for a long time and it’s gonna happen anyway and in your perspective it’ll only last 3 seconds. when the surgery is done, it doesn’t hurt, it’s numb and u get painkillers. u’ll also be very hungry lmao. for me i felt the needle in my arm, freaked out and then i woke up and i thought i was in the surgery room and i was like wtf am i supposed to be awake?? and turns out it was done. so yeah there’s nothing to worry ab don’t stress it

I was very nervous about getting a general for first time. I recall the male nurse(or maybe he was the anesthetist?) stroking my arm and saying "it's gonna be ok" as he must have seen the terrified look on my face. !! :)
Then he put in the iv for the administration of the general, and told me to count backwards from ten. I didnt get past 8. i felt this icy cold wave coming up through my chest area and that was it, i was out.
when i woke up My first thought was "'i'm still alive!" and immense relief. I was groggy and lay there for a couple hours in the recovery then i was collected and taken home.
I had no pain or anything like sore throat from the tube. i felt normal by the time i got home.

When I got my wisdom teeth out, I was put under nitrous oxide to help relax me before they inserted the IV, and that made all the difference. I was completely relaxed and had a very positive experience. Since it was early in the morning when I had my surgery, I had been kind of dozing off from time to time anyway, so after they put the IV in and I dozed off again, I woke up and the surgery was over. There was quite literally no passage of time and it really messed with my brain, but I think it’s the coolest thing ever! I had no negative side effects whatsoever, and I felt surprisingly good after the surgery.
All in all, don’t be afraid to go under anesthesia. Just follow doctor’s orders and all will be well!!

I'm only 13 and I've had 2 surgeries within 8 months of each other. For my first surgery I had regional anasthetic but also general anasthetic. For my second surgery it was just general. The strange thing about my anasthesia encounter during my first surgery was very odd, unusual even. I had a dream that I was walking outside on a clear calm night at my home in the country and that I was walking along the sidewalk, looking up at the stars, and looking at myself in third person. All of a sudden I looked up at the moon which was a full moon, and as I stared it kept getting bigger and bigger. Then I woke up and I was totally freaked out. Have you dreamt I under anasthesia before??

Had my operation for half thyroid out two days ago .First op ever at age 59 and had been looking at everything on TH-cam to be ready for the sore throat, cough n not being able to speak or swallow.
Well the experience was something else .Got in theatre ,laid down facing the clock at 4 pm ,they just got busy ,put in the hand cannula ,said we gonna give you something to relax .I said can someone relieve a itch on my side of forehead ,the lady wiped over it and smiled .Next thing I was gone lol.
I had eyes closed and was hearing persons saying wake up it’s over ,but I didn’t wanna open eyes ,just lazy .When I thought ok open them ,my one hand twitched ,then same side foot twitched then relaxed .I opened eyes and I looked and funnily enough I spoke and said Hello ! They was all smiles and I said oh I can speak ! They said yes you certainly can ,I said thank you all ,bless you .Brought me water and I sipped it ,my lips were so dry though .Time on clock said 5.40 pm ,so surgery lasted 1 hr 40 mins ,had been told can be 2 hrs and I was told all went well ,I knew when I spoke I was perfect .. I could swallow too .So don’t be afraid .straight away in ward I put on my travel pillow and I was very comfortable, didn’t get stiff neck or strains and that pillow helps so much .

Had my thyroid removed one week ago. I was also terrified because it was my first surgery and I was so afraid because of the anesthesia. I almost had the same experience: a lot of crying happended right before, but they almost forgot to give me the „everything is fine“ pill. I had about 20 minutes left before the surgery and the pill kicked just in when I was pushed in my bed to the surgery room. I remember telling the doctor how afraid I was but realized in that same moment that I wasn‘t anymore and felt kinda stupid. Then they put in the needle for the anesthesia und put the mask over my mouth and told me to inhale deeply. And whoops - I was gone. I woke up with pain in my throat but everything else was fine. I could talk and I was sooo hungry :)
The thing that still bothers me the most, is the loss of time. It‘s not like when you are asleep - you have the feeling of time gone by - it‘s more like this time never existed. But I think it’s more of a personal problem.
The days after the surgery I had really annoying pain experience with swallowing but luckily it’s now gone. I think in germany they don‘t give you pain medication that easily (I didn‘t get any!) - at least thats my experience. I didn‘t expect that the anesthesia side effects would last that long (tired, dizzy) but slowly it’s getting better. Thank you very much for sharing your experience! Best wishes from germany :)

I just had surgery to replace my defibrillator battery for my Long QT Syndrome heart arrhythmia. I was put under general anesthesia "twilight sleep" too for my procedure. When the anesthesiaologist administered the anesthesia medication through my IV she said "this is going to make you feel spacey.". I didn't know what she meant by spacey. The moment the medicine hit my blood stream my head felt dizzy and light headed. Then the weirdest thing happened about a second after feeling light headed my vision started to vibrate as nurses were moving around and so were their voices when they talked to eachother too. It was the strangest thing. Then the medicine started to make me feel sleepy. I have had so many procedures where I've been under twilight sleep so many times before that I know what to do. The moment I start feeling sleepy I just close my eye and let the medicine take effect. The procedure took about an hour but I had no concept of time. Your just out like a light. Coming out of twilight sleep anesthesia felt like your awareness being pulled out of a deep sleep. Like you were just deeply sleeping and your slowly aroused awake and just like that the surgery is over.

Marissa w You can do it! It’s very rare for there to be any side effects like that. Especially if you are young and otherwise healthy. My anesthesiologist explained a lot about it to me and they have a lot of control of how deep asleep you are. They are constantly monitoring your vitals and monitoring how far under you are so they can boost it if they need to! There’s a whole anesthesia team involved so that’s as very comforting to me! Hoping your surgery goes well! 💛

  • @charlotte-anne3461
    @charlotte-anne3461 2 ปีที่แล้ว

For me it wasn’t bad. It was my first ever surgery. I’m 18 years old.
I was extremely stressed and my heart was racing.
I laid on the operating table and my mum was with me. They gave me an iPad with kids shows to try and calm me, but that didn’t help. They also have me happy gas through the mask, which didn’t help. I was extremely stressed and aware of everything.
So I was laying there all panicky, and then the surgeon said “okay I’m gonna turn on the sleepy gas”. I had never felt so anxious in my life. I took tiny breaths thinking it would slow the process. Then my mum said to me “take a deep breath” and so I did. Immediately after I took that deep breath, my arms became numb, and less than a second later my face and cheeks and everything became numb and heavy. So incredibly numb and heavy. As this feeling spread over my body and into my face, I decided I’d close my eyes cause it would make things easier. And then I thought to myself “don’t worry, your brain doesn’t understand” and then I was waking up. It literally felt like a good deep sleep. It didn’t feel instant for me like everyone says. It felt like a very quick deep sleep. So relaxing.
(I had my tonsils out) and the first thing I remember when I gained consciousness was that it went from black, to dreaming for 3 seconds, and then I opened my eyes and I was in a different place.
I closed my eyes again cause I was still super sleepy.
I had thick saliva at the back of my throat and I was trying to cough and clear my throat up, and I was using my fingers to try and get it out (sorry gross).
And the nurse comes running to me with a tissue saying “no no no don’t do that!”
I was unhappy that I was awake cause I was so uncomfortable and groggy and felt so crappy, but then in my head I was saying “yay I did it”.
And everything was spinning. I wasn’t sick cause they gave me meds for it, I couldn’t stress enough to them how scared of vomiting I was, so they were wonderful with that.
I was really dizzy for a few hours, But overall it was a good experience!

So I had surgery 2 days ago (breast reduction) and I was terrified of going under general anesthesia. I had bought of every worse case scenario. In reality it was quite easy. Before my surgery my vitals were taken, also they put inflatable compressions on my leg. One nurse attempted to distract me while the other inserted the IV tube into my hand. I must admit that was a bit painful. They also gave me 2 500mg pills of Tylenol before surgery. The anesthesiologist came in and talked to me to let me know everything that would happen before hand. No contacts, no lashes (lol) if you have dentures or partials, piercing etc… all of it has to be removed.
Next we walked to the Operating room and I laid down in the OR table and the anesthesiologists told me that I would feel a little sting, but it felt rather cool. He placed a mask over my face and told me to take a few deep breaths and then I woke up in the recovery room lol.

    • @ThePasinis
      @ThePasinis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Cherie! First, thank you so much! I was just like you before my surgery. I was so worried about not having a thyroid anymore and was also worried about gaining weight and not being able to lose it even if I tried. That's something I think we all read online when researching. We see people that say they gained so much weight and no matter how they diet and exercise, it won't come off. While this can definitely happen, I think there are just as many people who don't gain any weight at all. It all has to do with how an individual person's body reacts. I am 6 months post-op and have gained about 5lbs. In my opinion, that is nothing and I am happy to take those 5lbs rather than go back to how I felt before with the hyperthyroid symptoms I was experiencing! Also, I have not done anything at all to try to prevent the weight gain haha. Just going about my regular schedule and everything has gone well so far! You will most likely have to let your body adjust a little bit afterwards and give yourself time to rest. Remember though that most of what we see online are the negative stories and there are just as many people with successful stories out there!! Wishing you an easy and successful surgery on Thursday! It is so much better to get something that is hurting your body out of there! Praying for you! I would love to hear how it goes and please let me know if you have any other questions!!

Thanks!! I officially banned myself from the internet!! I was starting to think my life was about to end! Lol I have had Graves’ disease for about 7 years and have always went the “medication” route. I always pushed back when my doctor suggested surgery. Luckily I was pretty successful on the medicine. I even went into remission for a year. So because it’s been awhile since I’ve really suffered symptoms, it’s hard to except that I have to lose it. I will say the past few months I’ve felt “off” even though my levels show normal range. So who knows this may be the best 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hello jessi! I’m officially 4 days post op. I’m not feeling too terrible but definitely wouldn’t say I feel great. I had a quick question. Did you any issues with feeling short of breath and elevated heart rate while moving around? I’ve been doing that the last two days. I seem ok while resting. (Heart rate comes back down to normal) I emailed my doctor but he didn’t give any sort of answer. I was hoping to hear “that’s normal” or it could be this.... but he kind of left me hanging. Thanks for any input.

@@cheriecoleman9061 Hey Cherie! So it's funny you ask that haha. I actually just posted a video about the fact that I recently had another surgery. I am 2 weeks post-op and experiencing what you're describing. It is definitely pretty scary because it feels so strange. My surgeon too didn't really have an explanation. I feel short of breath with the easiest things, light-headed and fainty. I'm also experiencing big blood pressure swings when I get up. I remember feeling fatigued and light-headed after thyroid surgery, but that slowly went away. How are you feeling now after a couple of weeks?

I have been struggling with bouts of anxiety worse then before and just feel “wired up” if that makes since. I’m looking forward to getting balanced out. Hope you start feeling better 😊

Thanks to share your experience, I have thyroidectomy next month in January 22nd, I got paper work from surgeon's office it has all info about upcoming surgery, it says they will call me for pre anesthesia test, did you had that? what's that? I never had anesthesia in my life so I'm more nervous about anesthesia than surgery.

I got surgery on my foot last year February 5th, and I’m getting another surgery on the 6th of October, speaking from my experience last year, it shouldn’t be very bad, depending on what your gettin it on, sor me I just woke up with a dull turning sharp pain in the area where I was operated on (my foot) I don’t remember much after waking up, just being in the room I woke up in, then in the recovery room whenever I woke back up, if you’re gonna get a local anesthetic, I’m gonna break it to you man, it’s gonna be straight up pain for 30 minutes about 6 - 8 - or 12 hours after you get the surgery, but I would get local anesthetic, it’s worth it. And since you’re all drugged up after the surgery (pain meds) so you shouldn’t be to bored in the hospital, for me I just watched ratatouille on repeat for the 2 days I was in the hospital.

Hi! I am so sorry to hear that you guys are going through this. I was very lucky in that I did not have any parathyroid damage from my surgery and did not have to take an y calcium post-op. What was the reason for your mom's first surgery? Did she have any parathyroids removed or just her thyroid? What did the surgeon tell you guys today when you went in for her 2 week visit? I had my surgery done in Nashville at St. Thomas Hospital. My surgeon was beyond fantastic.

I had to go under anesthesia and my case is weird.
I am 12 years old and I would say like in January I had to get three teeth pulled out BUT they are baby teeth. The grown up teeth are like way off from where they are supposed to be so I had to get gold chains attached to the teeth in my gum and put the gold chain on my brace wire. I still have it on today and I have to have in on until I’m a freshman. I had braces in 2nd grade and that sucked. I also got braces either in the beginning of 6th grade or the end of 5th. So I was like very nervous but the worst part was like tightening a ribbon thing around my arm to make my veins pop but the shot didn’t hurt and I literally blinked and I had gauze in my mouth and a ice pack thing around my head.

The only thing is you could act kinda weird on anesthesia...
