Josh did an interview recently and spoke a lot about it! Craig recorded the voice himself in the beginning. He said that one day Craig just kind of got tired of it. He didn't like knowing everything the robot was going to say all the time. So he asked Josh to come up with a voice. Apparently one of the writers was adamant that it sounded like George Takei, who was and still is the "Announcer" for the Howard Stern Show. Josh made it this own eventually. On top of the voice, his ability to improv with Craig made made the show incredible. Not that it wasn't until Josh, but to me when JRT becomes Geoff the show becomes the greatest comedy show of all time. They both become insanely relaxed and comfortable in their comedy partnership. Those later years you can turn on any episode and it's funnier than the best stand-up sets that took years to hone, and they do it off the cuff.
@Jacob Solano To expand on that, Craig, after the show ended, told Leonard Maltin in an interview, that Geoff was supposed to be Craig's protest and experiment in mocking the very idea of late night sidekicks. The final punchline is that, as Craig explained, JRT did such a good job as Geoff that Craig, with a laugh, said that the experiment was a failure since Josh/Geoff practically became a real (and great) sidekick. One of the most touching moments in Craig's last week was when, upon Josh introducing himself to the audience via Craig's "Please state your name..." routine, he received a standing ovation by the audience. Fun Fact: Craig also said CBS hated Geoff. Another example of Craig, through Letterman's protection, getting away with gold.
