  • This is a walkthrough of how to upgrade your stock desktop CPU cooler (heatsink + fan) to a new cooler.
    This video was done using an AMD system, however certain points were identified to help make this applicable to Intel as well.
    This is a very new format for me, if you can't tell, so be sure to let me know what you think down below.

    What’s really important is don’t take the cpu off of the socket when it’s covered with thermal paste, you will risk getting it on the back of the cpu, or worse on the socket. This applies to anyone updating the cpu mostly. Also I’m a firm believer in using the large pea in the center method in applying thermal paste, as sometimes lines will cause the paste to leak and you don’t want that. Try and make sure you use a thermal paste that’s nonconductive, it will be much more forgiving if you have problems..

    Should I just remove the cooler? Clean it and 're fit it?

Also I always wondered how do these massive heatsinks attaches react after moving the caise around a few times or more. Same for some mobo's PCB does it break sometimes? Gonna clear up a few mistakes I saw in this video, so people aren't at rick of destroying their new cooler or motherboard. He often says one thing, and does another in his videos. So here is a list of things to make for a safer installation.
    1. Always disconnect everything from your motherboard and REMOVE it from the case (place it on a non conductive, non static producing surface) make sure to ground yourself any time you are working with the motherboard or components. This makes installing the fan much easier then having it inside the case where space for hands and viewing angles is limited.
    2. A line of thermal paste isn't horrible, but it's not the best as leaking with a single thick line of paste occurs a large majority of the time, and this could be bad if you have conductive paste. Always go with the tried and true method of a large pea size dot of paste in the middle.
    3. As he said but didn't practice in this video. If you have already placed the cooler to the CPU and needed to lift the cooler back off, then wiping and reapplying paste is best as you may have spread out the paste to much and caused air pockets, he should have re filmed that part so as not to confuse people.
    4. Never pry or twist the cooler to see if its sturdy and attached. A slight (and i mean slight) press on either side of the cooler to test if its fully attached is ok, but normally if you have it clamped or screwed down fully, it's not going anywhere.
    To many times I see videos on "how to" with computers, and for the most part they are fine, but the people making the guides need to be less lazy and re-film parts they know they screwed up on because some people out there do as they see, and not what they hear (I know a few myself). When I saw him grab onto the cooler and try rocking it back and forth to check if it was attached, I kind of winced a bit. That is a very easy way to snap the CPU right out of the socket or bend something that shouldn't be bent. You would be surprised how easy it is to snap them off.
    Be gentle whenever working with a motherboard and components. Breaking something could be expensive to replace, and may render your warranty void. It's best to be methodical and gentle from the start.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Been building PCs for like 20 years. A minimum of once per year, frequently multiple per year. Parts aren’t that easy to break most of the time, a little thermal paste leakage is fine (better to leak a tiny bit than not have enough), reapplying coolers has never once been a problem for me, and pulling the whole mobo out of the case just to swap coolers is a huge waste of time unless you can’t get to the backplate on certain coolers.

    • @Jay_Pixel
      @Jay_Pixel 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@EposVox I have always pulled them so I could bench test before putting everything back in, would rather confirm everything works then have to fidget around in cramped spaces more then once. I find working in the case to be tedious and stressful at time, which in turn could lead to breaking something out of frustration, besides, it also saves cuts and bruises to your fingers and knuckles.
      As far as "things not being easy to break" we have had dozens of rig come into our shop this year with broken CPU mounts and PCIe slots from people bend/push testing to confirm proper seating or connection, which is why I always say a slight nudge on either side does the trick, if it won't budge lose from a easy push, then it's seated and clamped properly. Everyone does things differently, but as I run an entire shop, I have learned the tricks of the trade in the 11 years I have had my doors open for business.
      Not trying to step on your toes man, if you believe you are doing it correctly, then by all means, but there is doing it your way, and then there is doing it the way I was taught in the industry. Which for all intense and purposes is the correct way. I was just throwing in my own taught knowledge for others to read.

    I have one question. Why is the cooling fan not placed on the opposite side. Wouldn't it be more efficient if it was pointing to the vent of the case?

    • @toxicgroup5151
      @toxicgroup5151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Um well in my opinion its not exhausting.. It's clearly that the fan is intaking a cool air.

      If the fan is exhausting then the heatsink will not take any cool air so its 100% gonna overheat.. Sorry for bad grammar

    push or pull shouldn't matter.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does, based on the airflow of your case.

    • @hazimreitz
      @hazimreitz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +EposVox well, the fan have enough static pressure to pull air through those fins since it can do a push. If the fan is more to air flow but no static pressure then it would not move much air through the fins hence less efficiency regardless of how the flow of air inside the case. I am not sure about all cpu fans but all that i have experience with, the result is quite the same if pushing or pulling configurations the temperature stays almost identical either way.

      Bullshit. First of all, there are actually high frequencies in his voice. And it actually just means that he has relatively big and a large amount of skin folds (independent of fat). He's certainly like one of those guys with rough, leathery beet-red skin, even when they're super-skinny and relatively young. It doesn't mean it's "sexy" or "manly" or anything, but just a type of person which can look quite awkward.
      I was actually considering to suggest to turn down the low end in his recordings, and aside from that looking for comments which might point out things about the topic (like differences in newer hardware).
