The words, "near-disaster" and "not-so-brilliant" can actually be considered as one word because it expresses one unified meaning. Medyo nakakainis na paulit-ulit si Ms. Karen ng "1 word lang dapat" eh madaming pwedeng maging definition ang "word".

Also, if a dash connects words doesn't mean it's always a compound word. Sometimes it will be a word or a phrase. Depends on how it means. You just have to deal with English.
