    I frequently think about some of the worst times I've been sick, my surgeries, and my difficulties during my first labour, and I am convinced that if I didn't live in the modern age, I would've been long dead by now. How lucky I am to be alive.

      But they would smell bad I read a book once about The Spanish conquest, they were given flowers by the Aztecs because they "thought they were gods" turns out the Emperor and everyone around them couldn't stand their smell since they were used to be clean and smell nice unlike the Europeans.

    Vinegar, and even urine because of its ammonia content, have known antibacterial properties. I think the Jewish habit of thoroughly cleaning the house before every Shabbat and High Holy Days in addition to ritual handwashing and bathing also helped to decrease their susceptibility to the Black Plague.

    It was actually Vikings that were the first Europeans to bathe regularly, wear and wash underwear, and many kept a toothpick, comb, and small spoon for scooping earwax (all made of bone). The elaborate braids they wore were just as much for keeping the hair clean as it was for aesthetic.

Not to mention that it was definitely also considered sinful to look at one's own naked body!     Herbs and spices also keep flees away. So it actually had some protective effects. The miasma theory had some truth to it. Tainting the smell of the body makes it difficult for insects to find you.

    What a coincidence! My water heater is broken, and I had to heat water on the stove so I could bathe this morning.
    I was thinking about what a pain it would be to have to do that every day. Just imagine having to do that for five children & two adults every day! Yes I can understand why they got lazy about it.

      I was wondering when someone was going to point out that lime used in soap is not made out of lime, the fruit. Yes, they are spelled the same (It's lime not lyme which is a disease). Lime, used in soap, is usually calcium oxide and/ or calcium hydroxide, not the fruit. However, I do believe in this video the picture of the fruit was just tongue-in-cheek for comedic effect. It made me laugh.

There were a few guys that helped propagate the species William the conqueror, Charlageme and of course Gengis the Kahn had boatloads of offspring, I think 1 in 200 people alive today can be linked to, more the closer you get to mongol territories.

There's a cable program, I believe it is called 'I didn't know I was pregnant'. It has some very wild stories, but prove they are true by showing photos of the children in question.
      It was common for women to die in childbirth. They were healthy enough to get pregnant once. If they did survive their survival rate decrease with every birth.

I know it was pretty interesting like making soap from ashes, it's probably pretty in depth to because even to today Hindu's like myself take fire baths, get the heat and smoke on the germs and grime.     My Ten year old son would be a better doctor as would any other ten year old in our time than even the most learned Doctor of there time.       @@itachimistress half of my childhood was spent in the UK and half in the US so I knew both versions. I have always thought the UK version made more sense because ashes don’t become a factor until AFTER the person falls down, not before. Lol

    I've read several books on the history of the plague, and some priests also thought that drinking menstruation blood would cure/ward off the plague. I kind of just think that the whole situation was so devastating that they were willing to try anything. But yeah, they did a LOT of gross things thinking it would ward off the plague.

    I'm proud to say that I lived better than the kings of old. Damn! at least C-19 Pandemic we have good food, hygiene and first aid medicines to counter the illness, it still sad though that many people lost their lives but compared to the C-19 the Black Plaque is a massacre.

    It's great to have learned the origin of the term "Quarantine" which means forty in Italian. Nowadays, the quarantine period for COVID-19 is typically fourteen days but still sounds a lot like "forty".

      Because they believed that disease traveled through the bad air (miasma) and bathing would open your pores and let the bad air infect your body.

      Idk when I was a kid I had homework to take a bath like back in the day we heated a pot over a fire and carried it to the tub one by one and it was a lot of work for a kind of sad bath
