    one thing i look at alot is footwork. people dont realize the importance of it

      👆 Great comment. The setup before the final action is what helps you land the touch, and so much of it can be improved with good footwork.

      @@robinhu2563Alexander Choupenitch, Nzinga Prescod, Marcus Mepstead, Alex (tho that was years ago). While it is an honor to fence people like that, it's also a bit frustrating to get ground into dust after you think you got better.

    • @robinhu2563

      Ascalis dang. How did you get the opportunity to fence them all?

    • @Ascalis1
      @Ascalis1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Nzinga and Marcus are in NY a lot which is where I am. Alex was at a tournament and Choupenitch happened to be by my club in Brooklyn for the day as he was passing through the US so I took the chance when it presented itself. One of the great things about fencing as a sport is that it's relatively easier to meet some of the top people and they're usually willing to fence you.

    sincere question. My son is interested in learning fencing but I am wondering - is fencing dangerous? *edit:* Perhaps I should have mentioned, that a Korean acquaintance from church told us that when he was learning Kendo (Japanese sword fighting) and his back would be covered with red, painful welts after practice. And this, I think, was using bamboo swords!!

    • @philongnguyen2442

      You’re son should be dubs as long as he follows the rules and uses the proper equipment. Other than that, the only way you could get hurt is if something out of the ordinary happens or your opponent doesn’t obey the rules.

    • @mikefule330
      @mikefule330 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It can sometimes, but it shouldn't. A hit only requires about 500 grammes (about a pound) of force and the tip only has to be depressed a couple of mm. A skilled fencer will score a hit with quite a delicate touch from only just in range. However, when beginners fight, it is less subtle. I got a cracked rib once when my opponent's foil failed to bend. The kit they're wearing is "puncture proof" in case a blade snaps, and some fencers wear a hard chest protector under their jacket.

      Yes, it freaking does. Ask anyone who's fenced for a few years if they ever went home with bruises. It's a flat lie to suggest this isn't a very rough sport.

    • @kalelfer5491
      @kalelfer5491 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More in epee than in foil because the sword is less flexible and the pression required to score is 750 grams (500 in foil) despite the armor sometimes i find myself some big bruises.
