Great idea. I was looking for a effective way to stand my road bike when I don't have a wall to lean it against. Your directions and demonstration are really clear. (One suggestion - safety glasses!)

Wow! Your design is the best and simplest I've seen. I love how it's well-suited for scrap wood pieces I have laying around. I have 7 bikes for my family. Of course, the bikes range from 8 year old to adult bikes (2 mountain bikes and 2 road bikes, so I will have to build them separate instead of dual crosspiece since they're all different sizes. I have a small pancake compressor and a nail gun (I *love* these), so I think I'm going to try that instead of screws. Anyway, kudos for the video. You have some great design skills.
Nice job. It's a simple and handly design. You're a way better woodworker than I was at that age. Keep at it!
Excellent design and production values. I do think there are a couple of safety items to keep in mind. (1) when using power tools, it is wise to use safety glasses. They're cheap and a sound investment. Also, even with the guard, it's recommended to let the blade stop before crossing it with your arm to take your cut.

Brian O'Farrell the timber will swell if it gets wet & your wheel could get jammed depending on how close u make the measurements,either paint/varnish the wood to seal it,pay close attention to any gaps as this could trap water & rot the timber.

yup also predrill the holes deeper into the vertical pieces.
LOL! I was about to suggest an impact driver too, or get square drive screws ;-).
Great project Eric. A quick suggestion if you do end up with the gap a bit big and don't want to undo it - just hold the bike upright and drop a length of timber of appropriate width in there - the bike won't be going anywhere :-)
But you don't have fun doing it...

I would have notched each 2x6 to fit over the 2x4 for more strength then screwed and glued it. Nice project and simple design.

Very simple, very creative.
I tried a couple of variations of the length/width for tires but could not get mine to stand up without tipping slightly. In the end, I added some vertical 2x4s to help support the bike tire. That stabilized the bike and allowed it to stand. I'll add some kind of soft material lining to the insides of the wood pieces so that they don't keep chaffing the bike tires as the bike is moved in and out. Even with some extra width, the bike tires will keep getting chaffed on the wood, so I think that will be a good idea.

FYI, the angled ends look better, but you may lose some functionality. When you angle the wood ends it causes a lower point of contact on the tire making it more susceptible to tipping.
Always measure the tire width (ex 2.25") then add 3/4 of an inch ( 3"), mark your lines and drill. For extra protection from tire debris and moisture, sand to a 220 (or higher) grit finish then use either wood wax or stain. Your welcome!

Great video. Ask your parents for an impact driver, you will be amazed how easy screws are to drive. Another plus is that the heads of the screws don't get beat up and deformed. Keep up the good work.
we have 4 nicad b&d and 3 18v dewalt li-ion and my dad doesn't believe in impact drivers !
I thought impact drivers were kind of silly until I got one and boy was I wrong! Very useful!

QUESTION: When you put the support boards down under the tires you measured 20 inches. You then said you were cutting the vertical boards at 20inches. BUT in the video the vertical boards go all the way to the outer edges of the support 2x4's. So should the Vertical boards be 28 inches long (20 inch space with 4 on each end)?

The total measured length was 20". That already includes the 4" on either end (rewatch that part of the video to see that).
Nice, simple. Easily modified to make it adjustable for different wheel widths. Using cedar would be attractive and better outdoors. But what it mainly lacks is SAFETY GLASSES on your face while using power tools.
It looks good but if you didn't cut the angles off there would be more wood surface holding the tires upright.

this is great but like he said make sure you put those 2 boards close to the tire if it leans as much as his it could bend the spokes
THANX FOR THE VIDEO, it was quite helpful...... HOWEVER, IM GLAD I WATCHED THE WHOLE VIDEO BEFORE STARTING MY BUILD...... DID YOU NOTICE THAT IF YOU HADNT TAPERED THE ENDS OF THE SIDE PIECES YOU WOULDNT HAVE THE BIKE BEING HELD UP BY ITS SPOKES, that puts unnecessary stress on the spokes that could one day cause a serious issue!!?? If you had left those straight the bike would have been putting its weight on the sidewalls of the tire. OTHERWISE PERFECT VIDEO!!

Its sad they've taken shop classes away in the US, as everyone should be made to take it and learn how to turn a wrench, cut wood or metal and how to weld...only thing id change in the video is add safety glasses..you only have 1 set of eyes..protect em!

What's the 'drill' that you used?
it's a Ryobi drill, but any drill should work. If you meet resistance with your drill, you can also try a pilot hole first. Otherwise, an impact drill should make quick work of that long screw into the two pieces of wood.

What I did is take note of the tire width and then add about 0.3 inches of wiggle room to get the width of the gap
