    That continental forced perspective layout at 6min.15s made me smile. I'd like to see a British version. Maybe make a good article for RM?

    Great layouts with lots of interest. Bit surprised though that no jokes have come up yet about painting the Forth Bridge! Only quibble is that I’ve got to go and lie down after watching some of those passenger and freight speeds 🚀! Thanks for filming and sharing. Seeing ‘Charmouth’ was a treat. Getting a railway down into there would have been an engineering feat.

    I have never commented before on a model railway exhibition video... mainly due to the rule that "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything"... there's usually a plethora of layouts with dead straight track and 90 degree bends, running stock in ex-works condition, at Formula 1 speeds. But, I have to say that pretty much every layout in this selection is excellent.

    The speed limit for passenger trains on the Forth Railway Bridge is 50 mph, yet we see trains crossing at about 110 mph. Why do rail modellers go to so much trouble in scale detail and put in so much effort and expense and yet put up with motors and controlers that can't do scale acceleration and braking, let alone keep to realistic sectional speed limits?

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. I filmed Fourth Rail bridge just before the doors openned to the public to beat the crowds. At the time the team were still testing the layout after setting up. Recall they were have some issues with on of the lines not quite working. Part of the joys of transporting layout to shows, is things get knocked out of alignment and stop working just before the main event. Also you got to remember the layout is T Gauge (one of the smallest scales around), so gearing it not really a thing featured in these models. Went back to film it later but as with such a stunning layout, you could get no where near it due to the crowds.

      @@SDJR7F88 I have used scale modelling to help understand Einstein's General Theory for the last sixty years. A key breakthrough was realizing that film makers (before the digital age) filmed quarter scale RC models of Lanacster Bombers at four times the eventual frame rate. They play the shot back to us at the normal rate so that the aircraft appear to be full scale in terms of turbulence and control rate response. So, to make the train crossing the Forth Bridge look far better, I just play it to myself at half speed or imagine I am seeing a two times speeded up film. Model engineers can be proud that their work helped to uncover the "theory of everything" See www.quantum-time.org/

      Ha! Oh yes, was going over the limit a bit 😅

    • @David-ci1vn
      @David-ci1vn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That, speeding, was the real issue at Stonehaven; although the train WAS travelling below the HST line limit (as reported) the formation only had four trailers, below five or six (I can't remember) you have to reduce line limit by 10 mph per trailer, the mispresentation changed the responsibility from ScotRail/Edinburgh to NetworkRail/Westmintser, the questions should be, why.

    • @highdownmartin
      @highdownmartin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@David-ci1vn it was a flippant remark re the 15 per restriction ( I believe) over the whole bridge. That sprinter must be doing 50. T gauge is too bloody small anyway
      About the Stonehaven turn out: just had a quick read up, you’re right 2 power cars 4 trailers. HSTs were regular 7 coaches or possibly 9 so does the 10 mph reduction come off 125 mph? Obviously 4 coaches is much reduced brake force, I’d need to read the specific traction handbook to see what permitted speeds are with certain formations. I wasn’t aware of the short make up of that train and it hit the mudslide at 72 on 75 line speed section. However it was travelling wrong road so I would have thought 60 would be tops , wrong road.
      A bad result anyway.

    • @David-ci1vn
      @David-ci1vn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@highdownmartin "so does the 10 mph reduction come off 125 mph? ", no, it comes of the line speed for HST's on THAT section which I think is 80 i.e. 60 max. About "wrong road", the aerial shots show the formation right road having reversed at the Carmont signal box crossing, THAT was the delay as the crossing had to be clipped etc.
