Brooding can simply defined as. “Application of heat to the birds at early part of their life”. Brooding is the care of young chicks by provision of optimum environment. The temperature by external heat source provided until the chicks not become able to regulate its body temperature efficiently.
Brooding can be classified into natural and artificial brooding. It is done with the help of broody hens after hatching, up to 3 to 4 weeks of age. In artificial brooding large number of baby chicks are reared in the absence of broody hen. Equipments used for brooding are called brooders.
What is the purpose of brooding?
Remember, the purpose of brooding is to raise healthy chicks and provide the required heat (mimicking natural mother hen) until they are able to adapt and regulate their body temperature to the ambient temperature. For brooding to be successful, there is some equipment that must be available in the brooder house/pen.
What is needed for successful brooding?
The need to provide auxiliary heat for the animals is called brooding. Beginning at one day of age, the chick should be housed at a temperature between 87 - 92° F (30 - 33° C), at a relative humidity between 40 - 60%. ... When the chick is one week of age the temperature can be reduced by 4° F (2° C).
