  • TWiV reviews whats going on with measles and its global resurgence, poliovirus found in Gaza, vaccine hesitancy in a community, 14 year old dies of Nipah, selection of SARS-CoV-2 viruses resistant to nirmatrelvir, and protective but non-neutralizing antibodies from survivors of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus.

When Angela read SueEllen's email, I thought, "Wait a second, did I write an email in my sleep? This sounds just like me!” Sue Ellen perfectly summed up how I suspect many of us listeners/viewers feel about the MicrobeTV family. We're so, so grateful for your knowledge and heart. You really make a difference.
(And I would also cancel my subscription to the Times, but I'm also addicted to the games.)
Much love and gratitude to you all.

Vaccine hesitancy, “all due to Andrew Wakefield.” With all due respect, it’s not “all” due to Wakefield

I recently listened to TWiV 1135, another great example of your collective art. I comment to Allen, a man I respect like all the other good science educators. I rather wished he would have said I am 80% vegan, I just can't go the entire way. The machoman toned "I'm not going vegan..." lends credence to others to do the same. Nothing we can do would approach the benefit or just leaving the living things live. Row crops, irrigation, deforestation, killing the predators, alfalfa in the desert, keystone species declines on and on.

“Lapsed” anti-viral scientist here. The Pfizer resistance studies are pretty standard in the space. It’s a lot of work indeed. I too even went the extent of getting crustal structures of the various “mutants”. These studies are actually required by the regulators. They want to know what might happen in the clinic and what to look for. What typically happens is that there is a long list of “mutations” that we see in vitro and then in clinical studies we look for them. What happens clinically, is that we often see a few of the in vitro mutations. Occasionally we’ll get a new one in the clinic that didn’t appear in the invitro studies but that’s not especially common. Generally speaking, you only worry about >100 fold resistance. 20-fold is manageable clinically as long as you have decent PK. Resistance for acute viral infections is generally lower certainly compared to chronic infections like HCV or HIV. That short duration of viral load is to our benefit. You see their same thing in RSV for example. Nice work from Pfizer. But to be clear this will be a regulatory requirement from FDA (and EMA)

Do you take the full dose of heroin right at the beginning, or do you inject half at first, and finish it off after 1.5+ hours into the program?

Oddly my ex-gf grew up on the upper west side and has lived in Park Slope since the 90s so Steven from Carrboro NC is on to something about well educated CNN watching folk.
She does not have any interest in TWiV despite (or maybe because) her dad was a scientist and a physician. She’s a lovely woman, but in some ways prefers to stay in her bubble than challenge what the NYT, The Atlantic, etc dispenses. She IS evolving but it’s a slow process and primarily due to outside influences (mostly me)
They are primarily “vote blue no matter who” types who truly mean well as they argue at the co-op about whether or not said policy is just and good for the proletariat even though all them are well above that in terms of income. I can’t really talk about the upper west side except to say a lot of the folk who grew up there in the 70s like she did have ended up in Park Slope(2 of her childhood friends live there too coincidentally not by design)
Famous Park Slope denizens include former mayor de Blasio, Senator Schumer, and author Paul Auster(RIP)

Re Alan's Amtrak comment @3:11, Amtrak announced in June that it would not reopen service between Saratoga Springs and Montreal until after Labor Day. I haven't seen any announcement that it has reopened early, just did a search and looks like the Adirondack line is still only operating as far as Saratoga Springs.
