Ali what upppp? I listened to that entire Kendrick Lamar project some years ago... That sh.. is mixed crazyyyyyyyy..!!! So much sonic atmosphere from song to song.. TIGHT.. the one when he says walls talk damnnnnn... it's a lot of elements in that song... And I listened to the entire Dre joint you mixed that Compton project... A lot of elements in that as well... Bro you a beast WIT IT!!! Salute
It was $119 during the summer sale, but if you missed it you'll likely get another chance during the Holiday sale. Though at that price it's a pretty good deal, if you can afford at least the 3+1 custom bundle, then you can get it for just $100 plus any other three plugins of your choice. The cost basis is even better for the 6+2 and 10+3 bundles.
It is mind blowing that Ali has gotten as far as he has in life thinking that each dot on the SSL EQ is 1dB when it is 3, especially since he used the boards before the plugins and is an SSL veteran. It's almost like the numbers don't matter or something
@@OmoiSenpai At the same time if you look at the ssl boards he used for most of his career they don't have any numbers on the gain knob so you could he how he just never would have payed attention to the plugin since he's so advanced probably does everything by ear
No cap my ear has developed a lot, but I still struggle to hear the adjustments in release. Once I get that down I feel I will be so close to mastering compression (which is honestly one of the hardest things to have a solid grasp on)
do it like its shown in the video, listen to the fastest release and then to the slowest to hear the difference, then come to the middle and find a sweet spot. if you dont hear a difference between the extreme settings lower the threshold and/or raise the ratio
I think it's tough cause there's a couple things you might be listening for, with the release - tone and dynamics. In terms of tone, a slower release is gonna result in a more muted high end. In terms of dynamics, a slower release is usually gonna be paired with a slower-ish attack, and that'd be when you're looking to control the projection of the vowels, stabilize it. When you're looking to actually shape the attack on a source, that's gonna be with a faster attack (try and exercise listening to the difference in 0ms of attack to 1ms, and so on... it's pretty mind-blowing) and with a faster release - but, in this situation, I find I'm usually setting the release in relationship to the upcoming attack, to make sure it releases completely before it, and not looking as much at the word that actually triggered the compressor. After getting the release in that sweet-spot so it's not choking the upcoming attack, you can then start listening for tone and do some minor adjustments with that in mind. That kind of explanation really opened my ears to compression - hope it helps you too! It's all about knowing what to listen for.
take a very sloppy sounding snare or hihat and play with the release on there. take it to extremes and just play with it that can help a lot. vocals are so variable it can be hard to hear but to learn it I really recommend a loose transient sound (loop/oneshot so you know exactly what to expect to hear as you change it)
The comp was in circuit. Remember, the SSL doesn't show gain reduction until there's 3dB of it. So you can be compressing and no lights will light in the GR area.
as sylvia massey says in her book, sometimes they should just remove all labelling from Eqs and compressors and just let engineers use their ears. dude here defs is going on ears mostly as far as i can see which is actually fine with me and i much prefer the "turn a knob till it sounds better" approach to the fkn accountant style engineers who are like "i scoop 1db at 340hz off my snares" etc which just feels so unsexy
My man, I love your technique. I am a very simple self-producer, what do you recommend as far as overlaying vocals with separate L+R overlays n such? I basically use mixpad (free download) and was wondering if you can give me an idea of how to give your vocals a better presence without flooding it or making it too muffled.
Because the levels are very low - he doesnt get much compression out of it. I asked the question in the comments, if that is on purposes - I cant explain why he does that. But hey - he is the master, not me.
How come when I load this plug-in in ProTools it adds delay to my track? I thought it was supposed to be using the DSP from the shark chips?? Please help what am I doing wrong?
@@UniversalAudio no I understand that for tracking. I'm referring to mixing, I thought with the Apollo connected UA plug-ins didn't add to my "delay compensation load" or tax the Mac because they were getting their DSP from the Apollo and my UAD OCTO satellite?
They do not tax the CPU but they do have their own processing delay that PT compensates for automatically, just like every plugin. It's typically around 1000 samples.
@@UniversalAudio OK I get that! I thought maybe I had a setting Unchecked or something thanks a lot! Btw- I love the 88RS- I track through it to "tape" all the time! Is there a way to copy presets you create on the 88RS in ProTools to the 88RS that loads inside Console ?
Yes!! Click on the folder icon in the lower part of the plugin GUI and you'll find Copy/Paste. Or just save the preset in the UA preset system and they'll show up in both places. Let us know if you have any follow up questions.
UAD i appreciate the quick response with ALI.. can we get a 1hr/2hr mix with 808's being tucked into a low sub synth, and a big duty kick... y'all know what i mean... something different from a gtr and live drums... much appreciated
I dont even think he knows that he compressed the signal before eq'ing it. The EQ DYN SC button wasn't pushed in... Listen kids, if you wanna learn how to mix, dont listen too much to these celebrity mixers. Ali is dope, and he's good at what he's doing, but he knows jackshit about the actual physics behind his craft. He understand his tools, and goes by feeling - an ability takes years to develop. Now, drop to your knees, and start worshipping Dan Worrall. Study his youtube channel (also fabfilter's yt channel), and beware, it's not going to be intuitive, and most of it wont make sense the first time watching: But you will learn real shit. None of this "ohh too much compression = very bad" - shit. There are no rules.
..you literally can’t tell in the final mix unless there is clipping. all music software uses float math to calculate the samples and then is converted to analog on the way out, there is no too hot, there is no too quiet, it’s all just math
If you miss a promotion you won’t be honored. If it was an honor promotion that would be different. Don’t be mad at that. There’s better ways to spend that energy bro.
It is working, I think you're looking at the gate meter and not the compressor meter. Anyway, you can hear the compression if you listen carefully especially when clips the bypass.
@@audiospectra its really not doing anything but turning the volume up , threshold is at minus 10 and the signal is at -27 /-18 max so no compression is happening .
@@Dismiacs Compression is happening. You won't see a light until 3db of compression. He's also gain staged correctly. -18db is a good thing. So -20db threshold is giving him 2db of compression.

Each dot on the EQ represents 3db. You boosted almost 2db of 8k, You are doing 6db cut at 300hz and a 3db boost at 320hz.
I had to rewind it to confirm for myself as well, and then had to make sure somebody else saw the same lol. Thanks.

Check out Puremix!

Could we get a tutorial for mixing vocals with low budget equipment?

It's also important to mention that he doesn't use the board on individual channels but only for bussing.
Thank you
