The problem with the couplers is they go exactly where the third shelf should go to make all shelves even. With the coupler in place, you have to add the shelf either above or below making the shelving uneven.
From what I've seen, they've now eliminated the couplers and made a shelf in that position mandatory. Since I don't personally want a shelf at that location, it's a downgrade for me.
@@TheBrokenLife The issue then is getting the spines to line up and not have the top slip into the bottom. I have both versions. I like the coupler better because it makes the whole structure sturdier in general. Thanks for the upload!
I didn't have a mallet or a block of wood, so I used a folded piece of cardboard and a regular hammer and it worked great and no damage occurred. (I'm also lucky that my muscle rack came with feet (end caps). I have a Spanish tile floor and no damage there either.
Just to put it out there, a few basic blocks of wood are some of the most powerful and useful tools that anyone can have. Most home improvement stores will have a section of cull, or scrap, lumber where you can buy little chunks of various sizes for not much more than pocket change.
Thanks for starting out saying the size of your particular unit. I think the bigger the unit is, the more important the couplers become. Just my theory cause I have an 72x48x18 that did not require couplers and it's 2 years strong! Then I bought a 72x48x24 and it required couplers. I assume because it's deeper.
Oddly, and by totally random happenstance, my employer ended up buying a bunch of these racks (of very similar, if not exactly the same size... I didn't measure them) about a year ago and they no longer included/utilized the couplers. My personal theory is that they eliminated the couplers as a cost reduction and that there may be some old stock out in the world that continues to include them. It's also my personal opinion that the couplers make them _much_ more sturdy than they are otherwise. As someone who already owns *eight* of these racks, I am not interested in buying more of them in the future if they omit the couplers.
Hey man, You are way too hard on yourself regarding the quality of your video. Your video was extremely informative and absolutely better than probably 96% of beginner content creators. And better than probably 40% of established content creators. Seriously the wide angle lens is fine if not needed to see the whole project you're working on. The audio was superb even with the blower running behind you. Im subbing to you just on sheer principle. Well Done.
Thanks! Wish I would have watched this video before I assembled mine and learned the HARD WAY! ANOTHER TRICK: use a wide heavy duty tie wrap to put through the 2 corner holes above the corner of each of the shelves to hold the brackets from poping up while assembling the unit. It also makes it alot easier to move once assembled!!!! Overall (with the exception of the particle board shelves which I coated with poly urethane, they are decent quality for the price! I paid $63 for a 72 x 48 x 24 unit at Home Depot..
After having assembled 8 of those things at this point, I can confirm that the instructions are sorely lacking. I have decided that if I ever need to move mine I'm going to zip tie them together. For what I paid, they're fine, but for full retail price (I think around $70 now for my size) I believe I'd do something else.
My 5 shelf muscles rack didn’t come with corner clips. I am curious if the newer ones don’t come with them? I noticed on another video he didn’t have them as he assembled them.
My employer bought some around 2 years ago and they didn't have them either. It appears that now you're forced to have a shelf at the locations where the clip used to go. I think that's what holds them together now. I prefer how mine are built, but... the ones at work haven't fallen down yet. 🤷♂
Thanks! At today's prices, I think I may consider something more like the Gladiator garage racks though. I don't know if you have Sam's Club up the great north, but they have a knock-off version of them at a very decent price.
I don't think we have Sam's Club here anymore. They've converted them to Walmart supercenters. But perhaps Walmart may have them here. Either way I'll check them out. @@TheBrokenLife
Mine came missing some pieces and the manufacturer was _very_ good about getting the issue resolved. You may want to get in touch with them and see if they can help you out.
@@TheBrokenLife ok I see (I thought there were 3 uprights per corner, but there's only 2)... Ok so what keeps the couplers from sliding down over time?
@@TheBrokenLife 5:60 looking at your couplers I noticed mine don't have the middle punch out! Grrrrr lol in fact my couplers only have 2 holes! One on top right and one on lower left opposite side of the coupler!!!
@@peanut924 Hummm... I don't know if that would really be an issue for you or not. As shown in the video, I had to pound mine on with a hammer regardless. I think just the friction in them would probably be plenty to hold them together. Try it and see. One thing I _can_ think of is that it would be really easy to over-install them without anything to stop them. Do the directions say anything meaningful? Maybe contact Edsal and ask them if yours are defective or something?
I believe they do sell other heights and I think 60" is available. About all you could do (without literally cutting it up) with what I illustrate in the video is not assemble the uprights together and leave it as 2 36" tall racks.
They've changed the design since I recorded this video. The shelf cross-members themselves are now expected to hold the uprights together. I'm not a fan of the change.
Two years later, this video helped me. Walmart has a smaller version that is on sale for $50 (inflation sucks) and this was a very informative video
I'm glad to hear it!

The Husky brand at Home Depot is so much better quality. Yes, they cost more but the quality and ease of assembly is so much better.
Good to know. 👍

Anyone else having a problem with loose couplers? Mine aren’t tight at all, making the shelf not secure.

How did you know when to place the couplers? Is there a particular shelf they need to be on?
The couplers install on the ends of the uprights. That's the only option.
Maybe we're thinking different things?

so the couplers do not go right at the top of the one pole and the bottom on the next?
I don't think I understand your question. The couplers do install between the "pole" sections.
