It's not a protest song. It's a way of life song to abide by- a daily affirmation. "Give Peace A Chance" by Lennon would be apropos to a protest song more than Imagine but that's also a song to live by.

I was a teenager back in the 1960s The Beatles changed my world like coming from darkness into the light . The absolute excitement waiting for the album to be released and hearing it for the first time , when there first film A Hard Days Night was released queuing outside the cinema for what seemed like hours to see it for the first time . They changed music forever I am now in my late 60s whenever I hear Beatles music memories come flooding back to happier simpler times . I just cannot put into words or explain the feelings we all had back then listening to the music don't forget back then we only had the radio and television Happy days , Happy day. Aged 9 I grew up with The Beatles. I'm nearly 65 now & they are still the greatest band of all time. I remember the day John Lennon got shot. His death devastated me. I've never cried so long & so hard over a musician, who's pointless murder affects me to this day. I will never get over it.....I have a very rare vinyl double album which interviews all 4 Beatles. One on each side of the albums. On John Lennon's he is asked why are you doing things for peace with Yoko that has people calling you both clowns ? & John replied - Well that's ok because other people who spoke for peace, like Martin Luther King and Gandhi .....got shot.

  • @annemaclean6634

This song is so familiar - I've listened to it loads of times over the years and I had the album. You talk a lot of sense, guys, we should keep striving for peace, helping to save the planet and basically treating people the way we would want to be treated. A lot of people don't think like that - it seems to me that some people think only about themselves and don't consider how their actions impact on others. It is such a materialistic world we live in now - when I was young, we were told if you can't afford something, don't buy it and we didn't, you saved up for it. Not now, everything is on credit and some people don't seem to care how much debt they collect. Whoops, I seem to be on a soapbox - sorry about that. Anyway, John Lennon was a master of the songs he wrote - he and Paul McCartney together wrote some wonderful songs for the Beatles. I think he makes a lot of sense with this song. Very interesting reaction, guys, many thanks.

I found out that John would go for drives over to Connecticut on the Merritt Parkway which has art deco designed overpasses from the 1930s, each one unique. "must have equality, in all things, they cannot bear seeing people treated unfairly"
Equality in all things is a pipe dream. It isn't possible for the simple fact that while we are spiritually equal before God, our physical circumstances can vary greatly from one to the other from birth to death. Equality before the law is the best we can do.

As much as Lennon was obviously a driving force behind the Beatles success and impact, Mccartney, with his great abilii and synergy with John, was again obviously also a massively important part of it all, along with George, Ringo, their brilliant producer George Martin and others. Ask yourself this question ...... How much of his wealth do you think John would have given up to attain this utopia?? Because, as you know, he would have had to in order to bring about some form of financial equality, as pure Socialism requires. Of course, practical Socialism does not operate this way at all now does it. John would have made sure which side of the tax ledger he was on. The Beatles was originally John's band. John was a talented songwriter but the synergy between him and Paul McCartney was pure magic. As I've come to understand over the years it was Paul who was the work alcoholic and provided much of the motivation to get the boys to move on to do their next albums. This song is pure John since he was a solo artist when this song was made, and yes it's a masterpiece.

You're right about John, but without Paul's work ethic and mind, The Beatles wouldn't have achieved half of what they did!!

Also, without George Martin's help in studio and with his direction as well, who knows how great the Beatles would have been with their musical development and creativity.

Only when religion is abolished, when greed is overcome, when corruption is punished, when racism is eradicated, only then, will mankind learn to live in peace.

@@Max-dd4ow not with that attitude it wont. And that's what's so sad about all this: if people's attitudes would be optimistic, free of selfishness, then we could move forward. But the minute you attach thyself to an ideology, or a group of like minded people, the hive mentality takes over. Curiously enough, it doesn't work on higher principles, only for the most primitive of violent impulses.

I wasn’t trying to come across in a negative way
What I’m trying to say is it’s going to be nearly impossible to change everybody’s thoughts on religion, war, etc.
I would love a world where we all live in peace and nobody ever fights, and there is no hate, or discrimination

@@Max-dd4ow please accept my apology, for I did not mean to sound like I was referring to you. I was generalizing my opinion, which wasn't fair to you. Thank you for understanding my lack of knowing how to properly express my thoughts. I sincerely hope that us humankind will learn how to speak to each other and how to listen to each other as well. I know that none of us are perfect, which is why it's so important that we learn how to communicate in order to unite this country, indeed, this world. No need to apologize brother, it can be very hard to understand someone’s emotions through a TH-cam comment

I would like to say that I’m not sure where you guys live. But in watching and hearing you it makes me know what I’ve always known and we all know that we’re on the same. We sit here and enjoy music together and share the same deep beliefs. And it’s these people who are these people running our countries creating these nightmares. Crazy. Because all of us sitting in our rooms listening to each other listening to the same music feeling the same deep feelings and responding in the same way to almost everything. We’re certainly not the ones wanting war. We’re certainly not the ones creating all the pollution. We all think alike. But yet countries fight each other. Do we even know why? Listen to John’s Revolution. I loved it back then. During that time a lot of people talked about Revolution. But John had the guts to come out and say what he said. He got a lot of flak from that song at the time. Another thing about this song in this time. John was a huge activist against the Vietnam war. I’m not sure if you all know that. But if not here you go

IMAGINE by John "Lennon was inspired by several poems from wife Yoko Ono's 1964 book Grapefruit... Lennon later explained that the song "should be credited as a Lennon/Ono song. A lot of it - the lyric and the concept - came from Yoko, but in those days I was a bit more selfish, a bit more macho, and I sort of omitted her contribution, but it was right out of Grapefruit." And "Lennon composed the song one morning in early 1971. It was written on a Steinway piano, in a bedroom at his Tittenhurst Park home in Ascot. Yoko Ono watched on as he composed the melody, chords and most of the lyrics, and nearly completed the whole song in one short writing session."
Taken from "The Story of... 'Imagine' by John Lennon" by Tom Eames (October 2020).
