Ok I know this was kinda done as a joke. But as a character design artist / animation student it’s actually really interesting to see how people assign race to characters who don’t really have them. I feel like often times it has to do with the voice actors. Obviously whatever race the voice actors are is usually what people are going to associate with the implied race of the character. But other things can go into it too. Idk. It’s just fascinating to me .

This is a very real concept in character design called “coding.” In which you use several traits to imply a connection with a real life stereotype to package a lot of info into a few details. At least that’s what it’s called when you do so intentionally. When it simply happens and is observed by people idk what it’s called.

I feel like Sonic's race depends on the region and era. In the 90s, American Sonic was black (even voiced by Jaleel White). Modern American Sonic is typically depicted as white. In Japan though, he's always been Japanese (or maybe not since they made him with American appeal in mind).

This reminded me of an absurdly funny book tackling black identity that won The Booker Prize in 2016. One of the final scenes was like this but took place in the Supreme Court. If I remembered correctly, the protagonist also used a PowerPoint presentation to defend himself but instead of cartoon characters he used famous people and argued why some were black and some were not. For example, he argued that Bruce Lee was black.
I always thought he was named Darwin as an evolutionary joke: the family is rabbits and cats, but Darwin is a fish, leading to the question of "where did he come from? How does a cat & bunny mix into a rabbit"? Which could potentially open up a whole lot of jokes related to archeology and the evolutionary timeline and what not I suppose.

I think Marc Brown did a great job making Arthur, because it seems like everyone thinks that he is there race. Growing up I just thought he was white like me, and because the brain celebrated Kwanza, I knew he was Black. But I can see why some would think Arthur too. I also suspected Francine was. But at the end of the day I guess the fact they're all different animals is part of the metaphor. It's cool to see how different people can have different interpretations about them and bond over it!
I assumed he was black when I was a kid because he was a lot darker skinned in the original Arthur books that I used to read. Of course that doesn’t necessarily make him black, considering he was just depicted as the color of a real aardvark, but I’ve still held onto the possibility to this day cause that’s how I’ve always remembered him.

I said what I said. When you can't talk about anything without needing to bring it back to race, you are obsessed. And yes these people exist. I feel like Sonic's race depends on the region and era. In the 90s, American Sonic was black (even voiced by Jaleel White). Modern American Sonic is typically depicted as white. In Japan though, he's always been Japanese (or maybe not since they made him with American appeal in mind).

Sonic is essentially a Japanese spirit animal (similar to what most iconic non human cartoon characters feel like). I’d say he’s truly race-less and is something any human can relate to. You can make Sonic black, white, Asian, Latino, etc. and it would work because he’s an iconic character.

I'm gonna be honest. I've never had these kinds of talks with anybody when it came to non-human characters and associating them with a race. I saw them as they legit are. Sonic is a Hedgehog, Piccolo is a Namekien, and the Turtles were Turtles. That's how I've always been wired, even as a kid.

This reminded me of an absurdly funny book tackling black identity that won The Booker Prize in 2016. One of the final scenes was like this but took place in the Supreme Court. If I remembered correctly, the protagonist also used a PowerPoint presentation to defend himself but instead of cartoon characters he used famous people and argued why some were black and some were not. For example, he argued that Bruce Lee was black.

I think pink panther is actually canonically French I believe so ya probably white, but here me out panthers are actually native to Asia, Africa, and America so he’s probably ethnically some sorts Asian, African, or Native American. Just raised in France so he acts very French.

I think Marc Brown did a great job making Arthur, because it seems like everyone thinks that he is there race. Growing up I just thought he was white like me, and because the brain celebrated Kwanza, I knew he was Black. But I can see why some would think Arthur too. I also suspected Francine was. But at the end of the day I guess the fact they're all different animals is part of the metaphor. It's cool to see how different people can have different interpretations about them and bond over it!
I assumed he was black when I was a kid because he was a lot darker skinned in the original Arthur books that I used to read. Of course that doesn’t necessarily make him black, considering he was just depicted as the color of a real aardvark, but I’ve still held onto the possibility to this day cause that’s how I’ve always remembered him.
