  • One of my favorite of John Williams patriotic works which was written especially for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in the 80's. I first heard this when I was a kid and bought a Boston Pops CD of John Williams' music and I was blown away, literally by the opening D major chord in the brass (I had my headphones on and the volume was full blast)

Love this piece! Thanks for the reduction, always great to see Williams' genius. I had the By Request album as a kid as well and loved every second of it.

I hope to be able to travel to New York someday and see the Statue for myself. If I do, I'm going to keep this music in mind.

This is definitely a great, opening statement with the brass, and the major planing. The bells have such a jarring, contrary, and unexpected twist, definitely catching my attention. it's a great way to shift from triumph and euphoria of the reveal of the new statue of liberty, to taking a step back, and with the A theme, going back in time to France, when Liberty herself was in the process of being built, and the slow ascension into glory.
In regards to those bells, it makes me wonder if that was a duff of the cap to the bells of Notre Dame church, a quick hint of the very famous French landmark.

Thats an interesting connection, but historically Liberty and Freedom have always been associated in western culture and in our musical memories with bells. Let Freedom Ring, Church bells ringing at the end of war, the Liberty Bell. So while the Bell is a certainly surprising event after the bold opening fanfare, it’s doesn’t feel wrong in anyway. Functionally, it’s helps the form of the work by clearing the ear of that bright, exalted moment and allows for the build to begin and the themes to be exposed.

@@AnthonyOTooleMusic, I agree, the bells act as that transition point from the introduction, to the A-Theme. This of course, was done with sonatas as well. It definitely wipes away the euphoria I felt, like cleansing the palette before being introduced to a different meal.

I notice in the score, based on the opening tempo of 84 BPM, in measure 5, should the time signature change to 3/4, or should the tempo increase. I did not see any indication of this, so it is a bit confusing. Regardless, I love your analysis.

Yeah I think I cut that out accidentally when I was editing the slides for this video.
