Matt, your videos are helping me a TON. I look forward to posting some shots I've taken in the near future, that you were an online guide on without even realizing it! - Dan out of Kansas City!
What size beauty dish is that? Love your videos, by the way. I’ve learned quite a bit by watching you, but I’ve also found great inspiration to easily play more with my lighting. Thanks for that!
Hey Matt, I love your vids and there content, I took the summit class two years ago, when Denver won the NBA championship and you were one of the instructors, so I have been following you ever since, and you’ve made lighting so much clearer since, but so I understand your explanation correctly, you started out at 4000, shutter speed, put the ND filter on to compensate for high speed sync ( lowering power utilization to conserve battery life and recover) and dropped to 400 shutter speed at F8 iso 200, my question is what power are your lights, and are they all on the same channel synced or are the two on the reflectors the same and the dish light different, you said you dropped 4 stops, but isn’t 4000 to 400 more or did you compensate between shutter and Fstop for the 4 stop total drop, or in watching it again you drops 6 stops on shutter speed and your ND filter dropped you 4 stops?
The dish would be full power but the deep focus are definitely not. I don’t remember but probably around 6 or so. I think I used a combo of shutter speed and f stop to compensate for the ND once it was on. The basic point I’m trying to make is that you get your exposure with your shutter speed higher, which would need to use high-speed sync. Then you put your ND filter on and adjust it however many stops need to equal what your settings were. You just want them to equal out without having to go to high-speed sync when you put the ND filter on.
If it’s that dark I wouldn’t use the ND! If it’s a an appropriate situation you shouldn’t have any trouble. You can always focus without the nd on then out it on, but that would be hard for taking multiple shots.
You did get your shutter speed under the flash sync speed, so the flash runs at full power. However, you still lost 4 stops of flash power because ND filter affects it as well, right? Am I missing something here?
No you’re not thinking about it correctly. When you use HSS the flash output is not the same at full power than if you are under sync speed. The ND just causes your camera settings to be different.
Great video Matt! The sky was the icing on the cake!
Thank you! I know it was perfect.
Another great one! Thanks Mr. Hernandez!
Awesome thank you!
Great video man! That sky was epic!
Thanks buddy. Yes it was!
How did you like the a9iii?
Thanks for the videos I've learned a lot watching them! Hoping to attend the next online workshop
Glad you like them! I hope you can too.

Another good video, Matt. For a minute I got worried you dumped the A9III, but then saw your answer to another's comment asking about my same worry.
No way it’s the best camera I’ve ever owned!
Same here! It is pretty amazing in so many ways!
Thanks Matt!
You bet!
Matt, thanks a lot. Love you work! Exactly. What ND filter is that I am looking at picking one up. Thanks again keep the good work coming.
It’s the Polar Pro 3-6. They are the best out there IMO!
awesome content!! just one question having never used ND filters, do they affect the flash exposure? or does it affect just the ambient exposure?
They are basically sunglasses for the lens so they affect everything the lens sees!
Great Video
Thanks!

You’re very welcome thank you for the support! It’s the Manny Ortiz 36” dish. Here’s the link if you’re interested:

@@MattHernandez Awesome, thanks! I’ve never shot with a beauty dish, but I really do like the light you’re getting. Figure it’s worth a shot!
Always helpful! What is the variable ND filter you're using??
Awesome thank you! The Polar Pro 3-6 VND. It’s the best on the market.
Can you achieve a similar look without the edge lights? I worry that it won’t look the same without those backlights . I can currently only afford 1
It won’t be the same, but it would still work just fine! I use one light for these type of shots all the time!
Do you have a link for the Variable ND?

Can you link your ND filter?

Do you have any issue with exposure changing when you go from vertical to horizontal with the variable ND filter.
Yeah I have had that happen before…just got to adjust when that happens.
Wondering what ISO you were at?
I ended up at 200 I believe

I've had trouble focusing when the scene is very dark...any tips?

What focal length do you think you’re at for those type of pictures mostly? I only use primes at the moment.
24-70 almost always.

Sync speed 1/250? Arent you using the A93 with global shutter?
Yes but I did this video for everyone else that doesn’t have the a9iii!
