  • I'm not sure if this was David Harper's greatest ever percentage profit for an item he found for his Bargain Hunt team but it's pretty impressive.

      807.7% profit approximately...I think David...! You have had some interesting and tremendous finds over the years...my own are much more mediocre...! Having said that, I did find an antique 3-piece duck-headed tipple stick (formerly owned by Alan F. Palmer) for only £20 a few weeks ago...

    In the mid 90’s I purchased a mid 19th century fireplace mantle and surround from a Sydney auction for $440, sent it to a specialist auction and it sold for $23,000. Turns out it was a gift to,the governor of Australia and was exhibited at a Royal Melbourne exhibition.

    My mother was going to move house to live with my sister, so was selling EVERYTHING in her 3 bedroom fully furnished home. A dealer came in and said, you won't get much for anything, I will give you $650 for the lot. The dining room suite was worth more than that! Dealers can sell things for what looks like a cheap price, but they will be making a huge profit. So shows like this are just TV reality.

    It's engraved crystal, it's silver, it's enamel, it's Tiffany's. I've seen the silver mirrored compacts with the same guilloche enameling on this show go for that much but they are usually bought at a higher price so make less profit. He bought it for very little so of course the profit is huge.

    Been watching BH for years. The vast majority of the time, Harper’s bonus buys are either rejected or bomb hideously. On the rare occasion, he makes a profit and when he does it’s one hell of a profit. His purchases are positively bipolar. I was watching him only earlier this week on Antiques Road Trip and he bought some chairs for £25 and sold them for £130! Yet he appeared on today’s BH and his rejected bonus buy sold for nearly a third of the price he bought it for!

      Yes the world of auctions can be a fickle beast. Think of the Flat-backed Staffordshire Elephant & Castle that Charlie Ross found...on a different day, the result he scored with that could have been a totally different kettle of fish altogether... instead of a 4-figure sum, he may have been hard-pushed to reach 3-figures...! Or Paul Laidlaw with his Scottish brooch that cost him £1...on a different day, in a different sale room; that may not have sold for £90...!

      @@markc8956 Oh, go and do one! You’ve taken what I said out of context and you know it! Bipolar is an adjective that describes two opposing opinions or situations.
      Whatever happened to the ‘sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me’ attitude that was instilled in me from a young age! People get offended by the slightest things these days, and so very often it’s utterly false!

    When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

It's a charity, so I returned to the shop to give them some more money but got no further than "I bought a necklace here....." The woman in the shop immediately interrupted to tell me I couldn't have a refund and was so damn rude I left without being able to explain why I was actually there. Sent a letter of explanation & a cheque to the charity HQ instead.

    Every time I watch Bargain Hunt (ok, daily) I decide who's going to "win" in that moment when Tim asks each team, "How much did you spend?"
    The team that spent the LEAST usually wins, no matter what they bought or how much they are encouraged to 'spend up'! :)
    If I was a contestant, I'd also avoid anything that requires a CAR to move... Big heavy things don't seem to shift easily, in every sense.
    I also think all unspent money (after Bonus Buy purchased) should be added to Teams' profits!!

      kageypg Sellers will often sell for less than they are asking if you catch them near the end of the day, which I guarantee is when they send the BH teams in. Their original marked prices give them a tremendous profit, so better to get a guaranteed slightly lesser profit at the end of the day, then to have to lug stuff back home that might not sell for who knows how long.

Its called ripping people off. How do you think the seller felt when he saw this. Harper should have been up front and told the seller before he first picked it up that he felt it was special. He goes down as being an arsehole in my book. Insultr to injury they seem to great joy out of getting one over someone. Its disgusting.

I didnt know what it was but I cleaned it up, fetched all the gold paint off it and put it into museum condition. I then researched it and found it was a much more valuable bayonet. I bought it foe £30 and sold it for £400. I went back the shop to be fair with the dealer but sadly he had passed away and the shop was closed down. I would have been only too happy to share my good fortune with him. I told friends and family and they all said I was crazy!!!!! Dont think so, I have values and principals.

    This show's format is fatally flawed. How can anyone expect a fair chance of making a profit when they only ever purchase from antiques fairs? In other words: they buy from dealers. Dealers who they then sell back to at auction. In effect they BUY from the most expensive source; and SELL in an environment where you're guaranteed to make the least amount. Which basically means, they buy from dealers only to sell back to the dealers. I'll say it again: the show is fatally flawed!
    And it is strange how two of the most popular daytime TV shows in the UK are completely flawed formats, namely Bargain Hunt and Deal or no Deal. It reminds me of Bill Hicks' stand up routine about American Gladiators:
    ""Go back to bed, America. Your government has figured out how it all transpired. Go back to bed, America. Your government is in control again. Here. Here's American Gladiators. Watch this, shut up. Go back to bed, America. Here is American Gladiators. Here is 56 channels of it! Watch these pituitary retards bang their fucking skulls together and congratulate you on living in the land of freedom. Here you go, America! You are free to do what we tell you! You are free to do what we tell you!”"

    • @dinsy512
      @dinsy512 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's not a fatal flaw, that's what gives the show its strength, they are up against it and really have to search for the bargains. My view, anyway.

      Chris James do agree that it extremely difficult to make a profit when buying items at certain antique fairs or the large antique shops where dealers have concessions. However, whenever they are in Scotland and at the Glasgow auction house run by Anita Manning they always make money. Usually a great episode on a Friday.
      It’s not all doom and gloom.

    • @oshawaxpress
      @oshawaxpress 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris James - Loads of teams make profits. How many shows have you actually watched? Also, they are not necessarily selling back to dealers. There are always plenty of 'ordinary' buyers at auctions too. Doesn't matter how many times you say it, what you're saying isn't true. As for your waffling rant about American tv, have you run out of your medication?

    • @klaskebeinema3445
      @klaskebeinema3445 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris James eh... people don't participate to go home with loads of money. It is the thrill of the hunt. These people usually love the program, do they know what makes money, can they haggle. And winning with -100 GBP is just as good as winning with 1 GBP. It is about beating the other team, not going to retire afterwards.
