    The Escape was recommended to me by a colleague at the time of Julian''s disappearance last Jan. Such a strong short film it is. Now you've no doubt heard of the finality of his passing. My condolences. Aside from his screen work, the pandemic introduced me to his readings and talks he gave in Rome's Shelley -Keats House on the Romantic Poets he championed so passionately. Blessedly they are all on YT for us to enjoy, just like his talks/readings on his good friend H Pinter. Such lofty heights in life Julian scaled! A truly beautiful and humane man!

    Glad I found this, Julian is so underrated, it was a shame he was overlooked for Anne Rice's LESTAT. Art Malik is chilling. 😮 Be careful what you wish for.

    This is very beautiful and wonderfully atmospheric. As a father and husband it excellently hits home the incredible treasure we are blessed with every day in the form of our families and the dangers of taking that for granted. Thank you! And it appears you also had a hand in Inception, The Dark Knight, and Enemy at the Gates, in short, some of the best movies of all time, so I thank you for that enjoyment as well! Any chance of ever seeing a full length sci-fi movie from/directed by you?

    Wow! I discover this short film just now and I'm speechless. It's amazing, well shot, beautiful photography and wonderfully acted. I love the story and the mood of it, it seems so prophetic. Just now I can't help myself wondering if Julian Sands will ever come back... He's so perfect in this role.

      Thank you for your comment. Julian is a marvellous actor and a wonderful person, he was incredibly supportive of me as a first time director when we were making The Escape. @@paulfranklin7161 Yes, I wanted to add that this film is a stunning piece of work and it would be tragic if it were to be overshadowed by Julian's disappearance. I'm so glad that you got to make it, given how difficult it seems to be to get any film made. It's tremendously accomplished - can't believe you were a first-time director when you did this. And if he has gone, what a fitting epitaph for him.

    Hey Paul, did this eventually get made into Reminiscence or are they completely separate?

    • @paulfranklin7161
      @paulfranklin7161  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, there's no connection between The Escape and Reminiscence, though I suppose it's possible that Lisa Joy might have read the 1958 short story The Store of the Worlds that my film is based on- Robert Sheckley was a well-known SF writer in his time and Store is one of his most famous stories. But I think the idea of reliving the past as a dream is such a well-established science fiction trope that it could have come from many different sources - the key thing is what you do with that idea to make something new. In my case I'd been thinking about Sheckley's story for 35 years - I first read it when I was 13 and it blew me away, I couldn't stop thinking about it and what kind of person Lambert might be. I started thinking about making a film from it about 10 years ago, but it wasn't until the begining of 2016 that I figured out how to tell the story in a personal way. I'm glad that people like it.

      @@paulfranklin7161 I also read the story as a boy, returned to it now and then in my adult life, and found it very moving. Superb adaptation, Paul Franklin. For me it captured the depth of profound sadness I felt from reading the story. Bravo to you, you cast and crew.

    • @paulfranklin7161
      @paulfranklin7161  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Chesterton7 Thank you! I first read Sheckley's short story when I was 13 and didn't appreciate the profound emotional ending at the time - I was into the neat sci-fi concept at that age. But I too returned to it in adulthood and developed a new respect for the incredibly economic way Sheckley sets you up and then delivers such an unexpectedly powerful conclusion. The film had lived in my mind for a few years until I finally figured out how to adapt it - the final image is something that came to me in a dream, totally unrelated to the short story, but I realised that it was the perfect way to finish. The location we used - on the Thames estuary about an hour's drive beyond London, gave me the scale I wanted, contrasting with the intimacy of everything that precedes it, honouring the spirit of Sheckley's endless landscape of rubble.

    • @paulfranklin7161
      @paulfranklin7161  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are other survivors - Mr Kellan, the man guarding the storehouse, and the implication is that others have visited Kellan in the past - and the idea is that at the end of the film Lambert is returning to some kind of survivors' camp, but he is the only survivor of his family, or at the very least he isn't with them any more as a result of the disaster. The main thing is that the ordinary and seemingly boring life that he once lived is now over - his dream is to return to it.
