It's the story of two brothers fighting each other, Steffen playing the straight and honest one, Garko portraying a sadistic, screaming blond loony. Their mother tries to stop him. "Decent and morally upright Johnny Liston (an excellent and sympathetic performance by Anthony Steffen) gets out of jail after serving twelve years. He vows to get revenge on his evil and ruthless despot brother Sartana (robustly played with deliciously vicious aplomb by Gianni Garko), who framed Johnny for murder and stole his girlfriend Manuela Holt (lovely Angelica Ott). Director Alberto Cardone, working from a dark and uncompromising script by Ernesto Gestaldi and Rolf Olsen, relates the absorbing story at a steady pace, does an expert job of creating and sustaining an extremely tough and gritty tone, milks the potent sibling rivalry theme for all it's worth, and stages the rousing rough'n'tumble fisticuffs and stirring shoot-outs with considerable gusto. Steffen and Garko do sterling work in the lead roles; they receive able support from Erika Blanc as the fiery Joselita, Robert Miali as hapless browbeaten mute Jerry, Carla Calo as the bitter, boozy Rhonda Liston, Franco Fantasia as the weak, ineffectual sheriff, Sieghardt Rupp as the nasty Ralph, and Carlo D'Angelo as the crooked, slippery Judge Waldorf. Gino Santini's sumptuous cinematography offers plenty of bold and startling compositions (the sweeping panoramic shots of the dusty and desolate desert are especially striking and impressive). Michele Lacerenza's twangy and harmonic score likewise hits the flavorsome spot. But it's the film's remarkably hard and harsh no-nonsense mood which in turn gives this movie an extra jolting edge: the villains are truly hateful and sadistic, the outbursts of violence are quite savage and shocking (even women and children aren't spared from the copious brutality), and the climactic bloodbath is both wild and exciting. @@annabelladebonnay8320 What he plays in this film is just a fragment of Johnny's Theme. The full version is on TH-cam along with Chopin's Tristesse and some Beethoven. What an incredible musician he was! The trumpet is a very difficult instrument to play properly. It requires special lips. But Lacerenza plays so effortlessly it's as if he is expending no energy at all.

This is an interesting spaghetti western, and a real classic!
I think it's interesting though, cuz, as opposed to Sugar Colt, in recent memory, cuz I watched it last night, this is the exact opposite in a broad sort of way. The awful Sugar Colt, had a good premise, but lousy execution. This had a flimsy premise, but was well dealt with by the makers. That makes sense anyway. It's easier to have a good idea and screw it up than it is to have a subpar one, but really pack some umph into it. This was a good actioner and the classic elements of spaghetti westerns were well maintained (camera shots, music), but it was Steffen and Garko that really made the magic for me. Those two were just magnetic.
Just gotta say, wasn't that fight between Jerry and Sartana's right-hand-man one of the longest ever? haha
I should add, even though Garko did a great job as Sartana, I have realized as I've pondered on this film more in the last month, that Garko's character is based on El Indio quite a bit, which kind of makes his performance less enjoyable to me; mainly Sartana's ritual before killing people is so similar to when El Indio would let the chimes play before shooting an adversary.
One more thing to add, I think the sheriff in this film was the only I've ever seen lend a hand to the hero when he was being brutally beaten up. Kudos to them for including that.

In this movie, Sartana embodies more a mob boss seeking protection money. A common bandit. A man with near no integrity, he frames his brother for a murder he committed, and steals his brother's lady..
Even the Aztec palace in the desert in its Babylonian imagery fits Santana's satanesque nature. Even his men work for him out of fear and domination.
Other Sartana movies beyond this have Sartana as a lone gunman for hire who kills the bad guys, many times for a price.
The town's leading citizens are cowards and are willing to believe lies and kill the good guy. They prefer living in fear.
It becomes obvious their dubious loyalties are dedicated to their own safety rather than what is right.
Santana's mother would be the one to kill such an evil spawn. And yet Sartana would shoot his own mother.
