  • Original ("slant valve") Svea 123 backpacking stove demonstration. A Svea 123 is a classic backpacking stove. Introduced in 1955, it remains popular to this day. Originally produced by AB Max Sievert. The Svea name was purchased by Optimus in 1969. Optimus redesigned the Svea 123 to include a self cleaning needle. The version with the cleaning needle is the Svea 123R. The Svea 123R is still produced today, the only stove from that era still in production. The Svea 123/123R is perhaps the most popular backpacking stove ever. This demonstration is of an original "slant valve" Svea 123 of the type produced in the 1960's.

this brings backs memories, I hiked all over for decades as a kid and young adult with this reliable stove. These things are bullet proof.

I light my Svea 123 by equalizing the pressure first, simply open the burner valve. Air will draw into the tank or gas will come out of the burner down into the burner well at the top of the tank. If no gas came out I would close the valve and light a match under the stove to build up internal pressure. Open the burner valve to let gas into the burner well, close the valve and if your quick, light the gas with the same match. Open the valve before the flame extinguishes and a blue flame appears!

Nice one Jim, cracking little stoves (even better with SIGG Tourist pots). Like Protuberant I wrap a little fibre glass around the the burner which gives a much better prime.

You're right about that buddy. You get much better use of your fuel with a small flat pot. I think most of my cooking, though, is in small pots these days. I generally use a SnowPeak 700 or my Blue Diamond almonds can. The latter is good for most things from baking to heating water or making small rice dishes, but I don't fry in it. That scorches the inner lining. And I usually go with an alcohol stove though my last video shows me using a cannister stove. Its fun switching things around. Thanks

Can't wait to use my dollar 123 I found at a second hand store last week. Look like a fun little cooker. A bit too heavy to use all the time, but as a curiosity, I like it.

Nice video! I bought a used SVEA 123R today. Your's is the original SVEA 123 with the control valve slanting downward at about a 45 degree angle I think. I can't wait to try mine out. I wish I had seen these things 40 years ago. I would have bought one then. Thanks for the video and for the demonstration how to use the stove. Ever had to rebuild the stove or replace any of the parts? Where do you even get parts for it if they break or need replacing? Please advise. Thanks Hiking Jim. Rock On.

@rmstudio You know I've had the same problem in the past, concerning a simmer stove with alcohol fuel. The way I solved it was making several kinds of simmer stoves, some with pop-cans, some with aluminum inhaler cans. I have a stove I quit meassuring the time on after an hour and eight minutes, last year. It kept things simmering without buring on less than 1/2 once. I've threatened to make a video on it for some time, but haven't as of yet. A lot is just experimentation with these little guys.

@hikinjim Hi Jim. I was thinking more on the lines of the kind of stove I normally use. My Sub-Three once cook set, stove, pot, windscreen spoon, lighter, is under 3 onces. (See my video.) I can recall when this Svea was 'thee' stove to have and was one of the lightest out there, but time moved on and guys started experimenting with alcohol stoves and aluminum cans. They changed everything. I did rediscover the pot size, used here. A BlueDiamond almonds can is almost the same size. Thanks.

Nice video. I use lighter fluid for primer so I can see the flame.
The instructions suggest using fire paste. I find that doesn't work so well.

I was told that if the svea is chugging that the stove is not hot enough to completely vaporize the fuel.

5:12, how do you equalize the pressure outside the tank?

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635 7 ปีที่แล้ว

What he means is, just open the filler cap and if there is any pressure left in there from last time it was used, then it will be released, you should do this when it has cooled down before putting it away

Jim what type of fuel can you use in a Svea 123?

    • @charlietango1635

I will answer for him, (as he has not bothered,) you can use Colemans fuel or lead free petrol, to prime it you can use Methulated spirits.

Although I have "LIKED" sadly yours was not DEMONSTRATION it was a TALK demonstrations are image related, easier to recall than your sound based submission.
    But thanks anyway.
