Just want to set the record straight on a few things: 1. We have never received any funding from George Soros. 2. "Full democracy" refers to the term used by the Economist Intelligence Unit. It's the term they use to grade the health of a democratic government globally. You can read the report here: www.cnbc.com/2017/01/25/us-is-no-longer-a-full-democracy-eiu-warns.html 3. The US is a constitutional republic and a representative democracy. Since most Americans do not refer to our government using the full qualifiers, it's widely accepted that democracy and republic are interchangeable. 4. Yes, we know some of you don't like Jennifer Lawrence, but would you even be here watching this video if not for her? If at the end of the day, all you want to do is finger point about liberals vs conservatives, about imaginary George Soros funding, or argue about the terms democracy and republic, then maybe you aren't looking at the bigger picture. We've got big problems in this country that stem from a rigged system that screws over ALL of us, and it's going to take ALL of us working together to fix those problems.
A heads up to @RepresentUs. This video cannot be shared on Facebook "because it includes content that other people on Facebook have reported as abusive." Surely pure coincidence.
Personally I could not care less who helps funding this project, provided it was transparent, open and without direction as to what you could do with the funds. It the transparency that matters, and it must underpin everything you do. Thus, your list of donors at represent.us/donor-list/ is a great effort.
5? this has been going on since 1923 when the US national reserve was sold to the same people that own Briton, the Rothchilds. The war of independence has been nullified and backdoor-ed.
Kudos to Jennifer Lawrence for lending her voice, time, talent and, especially, her passion to this critical issue. Our current is so broken that it's gone beyond dysfunction...it's now toxic.
@@eleghari in Germany we have a saying "Der Krug geht solange zum Brunnen bis er bricht" Roughly translated into 'the pitcher goes to the well till he breaks'. Meaning things go wrong as long till they break, things often need to get worse before they become just plain obvious and then can be rebuild. People left out in the cold while the rich party in the warmth on inauguration day. How much more obvious could it get? Also i don't intend to imply here any partisan preference, the political left aka Democrats in the US, is what here in Germany i would define as FDP aka liberal which basicly ir right of center just for buisness interests. The US does not have a true left. In the US the social issues put forth by Democrats seem more like token issues on the flag, blueprints for people to rage about while they never change, being kept artificially alive for identity politics. Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin, a capitalist system. It was never ment to serve everybody, but due to strive and struggle, the people step by step got themselves some rights and redefined who "we the people" are.
@kinngrimm Indeed! The only difference between Democrats and Republicans is in the mind of the voters alone. But I am not so optimistic about things getting better, at least not in my lifetime. The progress that was made, the rights won, are being rolled back right now...
@ I am not that optimistic either, as i said, it may need to become worse, before it could become better. When things truely break, then people may come to see reason, equally those voters without a meaningful choice as the elites if they see their cushy lives suddenly not that safe any longer. edit: also i do not advocate violence, but see it as pretty much inevitable if the pressure would not find a release, usually that is done by a war where those without means end up in hopes to better their lives by a payed for education in the military.
To put this gently, your timeline expectations were unreasonable. Look at the timelines again at 7:56. All these movements took DECADES to get off the ground. You have to keep pushing forward until it reaches the necessary critical mass, and that involves years of thankless work with no discernible impact.
This is a picture of the country we COULD be living in ... if only. Thanks to Jennifer Lawrence for helping shine a light, and I can't believe I'm only NOW seeing this video, five years later, when it feels like things have only gotten worse.
So do your part to spread the message. It takes US not THEM to fix the corruption problem in government. If you're not part of the solution at worst you're part of the problem and at best you at least know the solution but are not willing to spread it. Tough love.
Jennifer is my biggest inspiration already for her personality and acting, but this is a whole new level of respect for her. I had no idea she was such an activist for change. (It's almost as if a that Katniss energy is being put to use) I fully support this movement despite being non-american and living on the complete other side of the Pacific.
I just found this and noticed it's from five years ago. I get the feeling that, since then, those in power have been putting a massive effort into doing the exact opposite in order to squelch these ideas. Have we made any progress at all here?
Try making a point of spreading such ideas in YT comments, you'll see that effort at work. Censorship is happenings tens of thousands of times a day on here.
Then you are not listening to the correct media sources. Recommend picking up The Majority Report, Secular Talk, David Doel, Robert Reich or David Pakman as a few examples.
I am watching this today, 5 years after it was uploaded, and it is exactly what the US needs, yet we are here, Trump and his oligarchy are swallowing everything. We need to wake up and change the system before it's too late, and the first step is educating ourselves! Please share this video with whomever you know 🙏
OMGosh … Thank you for taking the bull by the horns and giving the Country an alternative to the oligarchs! I keep hearing, “don’t give up,” “fight the government we have now,” etc… I wanted to but I had no idea what to do. Now, thanks to you, we have a roadmap, we have a blueprint to take back our Country! I’m in! And I’m sharing this with everyone I know! 😍
The first step is to stop using the term 'lobbying.' It's a way to disassociate the practices of huge companies with what people think of as bribery. Instead of calling something 'lobbying,' we should just call it bribery.
Not all lobbying is bribery. Not all bribery is lobbying. Sometimes they're the same thing. But an agricultural business lobbying Congress to not limit a specific chemical used in both fertilization and bombs is a good thing as such an action could severely impact the agricultural industry. Contrary to what your governor may tell you, he's likely never worked on the farm and probably thinks a backhoe is a tool you throw on your shoulder when going out to the fields. An IT company lobbying Congress to not implement certain technology due to vulnerability concerns is certainly not bribery. Not all lobbying is bad; just some of it is.
They brought up ranked choice voting AND stopping the revolving door with sweet rewards given to politicians leaving office. These are two critical issues. I'm very impressed.
Hi there, I'm so grateful to TH-cam, that I found this most important video. I'm living in Russia, and corruption transformed our life into a survival. Please keep your democracy and don't repeat our mistakes. Love America!

genium me I agree with the video on the fact that our government is corrupted and the politicians are even more so and I strongly believe that we need to fix it. I am curious as to what you hear about America because as an American I can confidently say that day to day life isn’t as bad as it is often portrayed. A large majority of Americans (probably mostly conservative) have or will disregard this video 10 seconds in if not sooner because they see Jennifer Lawrence, I almost did myself. This is because she is famous and from Hollywood. Hollywood and NYC and other major cities have a large influence on other Americans mainly because of television, movies and social media. Almost every American knows who she is. If you take a look at America’s 2016 electoral college by county instead of by state, it is obvious that the more populated areas (like Hollywood, NYC...) vote democrat while the rest of America votes republican. This is not a coincidence. I’m not saying that’s how everyone is, but it’s generally like that. It’s just different lifestyles. When Trump became president I remember hearing all the time that America was Doomed because he’s now in charge (mainly from the news on tv or social media). And honestly, since 2016 life for everyday Americans has actually gotten better. Out of all the national news outlets about 98% of them consider themselves liberal or left-leaning. And as of right now the only thing that they can all agree on is that they hate Trump. An incredibly large majority of American news about Trump is negative. Yet almost 50% of Americans support him. This is why Trump continuously attacks the mainstream media. This is why people won’t listen to the mainstream media. And with social media being more popular than ever, it is easy for famous people like Jennifer Lawrence to have a message that millions in America will hear. That why people get so mad about celebrities discussing politics. I’m not sure how familiar you are with American celebrities but, just like a cities population, most celebrities are liberal or further left (socialist/communist). So when they discuss politics on tv or whatever, they tend to make things look bad in an attempt to push their political agenda. The American government and election does listen to the American people. That is how Trump got elected. The electoral college worked exactly as it is intended to work and how it has always worked. Yes Hillary did get the popular vote, but America IS NOT a democracy nor has it ever been. Democracy is mob rule which ultimately leads to mob take. The American government is a democratic republic. The electoral college is a perfect example as it is designed to give the minority party (in this case the republicans) an equal chance of winning the election as they did in 2016. As of right now, the government picture is looking better for republicans than for democrats, and the mainstream media and democratic politicians will stop at nothing to see Trump fail. That’s why America looks bad right now. In actuality, Trump has kept his promises and done more for the American people in his first two years than most other presidents got done in 8. Unemployment rates for African Americans, Asians and women are at an all-time low. America’s GDP is the highest it’s been sense the 1960s, and our economy in general hasn’t been this stable in decades. Illegal immigration has dropped a ton. And our relations with Russia, our biggest threat, have never been better. North Korea’s nuclear threat is all but gone. And I’m not sure about you in Germany, but in America heard anything from ISIS sense Trump dropped the MOAB. The thing is, Obama’s a nice guy but he was a terrible leader and possibly the worst president America has ever had. Trump is not a politician, he is a businessman. That’s why he says whatever he wants. That is also why he got elected. Before he got elected, he had several billion dollars. If you don’t already know this about the American politicians, they will do anything for two things, 1) to stay in a position of power, and 2) money. Trump didn’t need to become president to stay in power as he has his business, and you can’t “buy” Trump like you can politicians. Trump beat Hillary in the election fair and square with only a fraction of the funding. (The funding comes from the citizens and most of the large donors happen to also be democratic) Trump listens to the American people and he works for our best interests. Trump is the only one not corrupted in our government and he doing a great job fixing that. America is not destroying itself. America is doing pretty d*mn great.
Lobbying per se isnt a bad thing. For every scumbag lobby like oil, coal or tabacco, pushing for deregulation and higher profit, there is a nice lobby like ones for disabled citizens or environmental issues, fighting for a cause that otherwise wouldnt be on the mind of many politicians.

Even if it was: whether something bashes Trump has no bearing on if it has a valuable perspective. Trump is objectively a problem, and one doesn’t need any partisan reasons to dislike him.
MrChen 06 No, because defining what a lobbyist is must be done on the city or state level by a legislative body. It’s possible that a broad definition of ‘lobbyist’ might be easily dodged in many states, and a strict definition of ‘lobbyist’ might not reach far enough in many states. Lobbyists are different depending on location, interest, and existing law, and not taking that into account by providing a definition is more dangerous than not providing a definition at all and leaving that up to reasoned debate.
@@Butterfly1025A I don't see how that makes this a bad campaign?? These sort of bills get pitched, edited and improved. If they get it enacted I'm sure their next step would be to have their grassroots members define lobbyist. You gotta start somewhere.
I don't want to begrudge your fun, but I'm going to. And yes we need to laugh. It's the cynicism, though, that eats the heart of hope, slowly. Another thing broken in America is discourse, conversation: we think that valuing what is said to whom and how is somehow inherently dishonest. Being careful with communication is exactly that - care. (Assigning otherwise unspoken motives to something someone says is careless listening. It goes both ways.) Sarcasm, cynicism, and mixing metaphors with reality at this point is really, really unhelpful.
@@benchang1022 because then only rich ones would have sufficient advertising lol. (unless your able to get the media's attention). another problem is with how many people run, as our population increases slowly, so will the number of people running, which will mean that it costs us more and more money. Now the costs wouldnt just be the funding for politicians. You also have to pay for the people managing the amount, making the law, and the ones actually executing and enforcing the law. You see, with a growing number of people running for different places in the government, it will be harder and harder to monitor all their financial affairs, meaning that you will have to higher more and more government officials. The cost of providing government funds to politicians would also be potentially rigged by government officials running it, so as to support one party or another.

@@alexpopovic7727 The "popular vote" part. Just because something is popular absolutely does not mean the people should have the power to change it. We have a system of laws in place to prevent the tyranny of the majority. Put it this way. Imagine if a state wanted to bring back slavery? They COULD if it was a direct Democracy. If the "majority" said "hey guys! We want to make slavery legal again, lets all take a vote!", then poof, slavery is back. Thanks Jennifer Lawrence... They call it a "Constitutional Republic", that is what America actually is. We have a series of laws that our democratically elected officials must abide by and must write new laws in accordance with but cannot violate. For example the freedom of speech in America. It doesn't matter if that is unpopular somewhere, that shouldn't be changed or revised. The same goes for the right to bare arms, and the right to practice your religion, etc.
@@thesanfranciscoseahorse473 - I would only add that, for example, if enough people in the country wanted to outlaw freedom of speech it could be done with an amendment to the constitution. I want senators spending AT LEAST the majority of their time actually doing their job and not pandering to the wealthy to keep their job. I want bribery to be a crime for politicians in the same way that bribery is a crime for policemen, and for the same reason. I want the first Amendment to be protected not by a democratic media and a republican media calling each other criminals for the EXACT SAME controversies. Essentially I want 'we the people BY the people FOR the people' to be real. The Civil War in our country came about precisely because we allowed the uber rich to say their votes counted more then ours, that a slaveowner with 50 slaves had 31 votes, over his fellow citizens who were against slavery having only 1 vote, giving him the ability to gainsay the majority, undercutting all farmers who did not have slave labor and outvoting their cries against it. Do I think it will fix every issue they stated like environmental concerns, child poverty, and an extremely harsh criminal system? @@amberschairer7732 Those are fine things to want, but what makes you think that anything that Jennifer Lawrence suggested would get you those things? What do you imagine the future would look like, and why would it look like that, based on what she says? In my opinion, what Jennifer Lawrence suggests wouldn't do anything to curb the problems in government. They would, in fact, make some problems worse. As I already wrote in comments elsewhere, "Several of the ideas proposed are bad ideas, and I didn't see anything that actually identified corruption or showed a way to stop it. Gerrymandering is an imprecise term with no clear-cut point at which redistricting becomes gerrymandering. Automatic voter registration is a horrible idea; believe it or not, we actually don't need voters who don't know what they are voting about. Transparent political donations could easily lead to intimidating people from donating to controversial causes." Some additional notes: The people who keep complaining about gerrymandering, most of the time, are Democrats. Attacking gerrymandering usually is a Democrat trying to swing an election his way. "The Civil War in our country came about precisely because we allowed the uber rich to say their votes counted more then ours, that a slaveowner with 50 slaves had 31 votes, over his fellow citizens who were against slavery having only 1 vote, giving him the ability to gainsay the majority, undercutting all farmers who did not have slave labor and outvoting their cries against it." That isn't the way that worked, at all. The only time that a slave counted for votes was when the federal government was deciding how many House representatives each state could get, and the slave only counted as far as giving the South more House representatives than they would have gotten without the slaves. The slave owner's votes did not count more than those of another citizen of his own state, all else being equal.
@@Pooua I don't buy that this is a video about Jennifer Lawrence. She is using her fame to support an idea, she notes that she didn't come up with this on her own, she went looking for people with ideas. Corruption occurs when there is a lack of transparency. Corruption does not happen out in the open. We see the politician but we do not see who is pulling his strings. That needs to stop, if I know the solar industry is backing my president, then at least I know that he is going to push for that and demonize coal. He might be right too, but it is important to at least know where self-interest is affecting policy. Gerrymandering- It is not 'Democrats' who get mad about gerrymandering, it is citizens who voted 'blue'. I make this distinction because Gerrymandering highly favors 'red', but as she pointed out, democrats are also a minority, apparently 'other' IS the majority these days. I am a moderate and regardless of which way I vote, and where I am currently living, my vote should count. Period. If you are a citizen then you have the right to vote, and arguing that people who are too busy to get through the red tape are stupid and therefore it is just as well that they can't vote, maligns a lot of good citizens. I totally agree that voters are ignorant, but these days it is very difficult to figure out what a politician's platform actually is. All we get is a name and a color.... oh and mudslinging commericals, which ends up making us all feel like there are NO good choices. Politicians are afraid to tell us what they stand for, but I think it is time that we insist it is laid out in writing, and available at every voting location. Every other profession requires a proposal when bidding for a job, but for the most important jobs of all we get little more then their name and their party affiliation... and all those vicious rumors. If we change that, then voters won't be kept in the dark. Unfortunately requiring an IQ test to vote is inherently unconstitutional, so we have to trust (an ensure through our public schooling) that our voters are just as smart as we can make them. that means keeping them all informed, it does not mean trying to bar the people we think are 'stupid' from voting. Transparent political donations should be very specific to companies vs individuals, and perhaps to dollar amount. If someone donates $10 to a controversial cause no one cares. If they donate $1,000,000 to influence an election toward their products I think we deserve to know that. You heard the phrase 'put your money where your mouth is?' Well we got lots of money, but we don't know whose mouth is speaking to us. If Coca Cola donates 5 mil to a candidate then yes I want to know why, ESPECIALLY if it is 'controversial'. If you are donating that much you are already getting death threats from someone, you are rich you are powerful and somebody hates you for it. This lack of transparency is how we get politicians decrying smaller servings of soda being offered at schools as 'unamerican' when the intention was the better overall health of our children. 'Coca Cola' can just suck it up and come up with a better product, or tell us themselves they think drinking less sugar water is 'unamerican'. As far as the Civil War correction, thank you I didn't know that. Still, even if I was misinformed as to how much the 3/5 votes upended the balance of democracy, I do know that the vast majority of whites did NOT own slaves in the south, and that slavery actually harmed their own businesses. Only the extremely wealthy benefited from slavery, and they were more then happy to keep the poor white population focus on hating and feeling superior at least to black people. The poor white resented the rich white as well, but they also envied the lifestyle they couldn't have. There was almost no way for a white man to become wealthy without slaves in the south. Of course they defended what appeared their only available route to success. How can you compete if you pay wages and your competitors do not? The north honestly wasn't much better, factories paid their workers next to nothing for hazardous work, but at least people could quit, and were seen as being human. They could vote and make their voices heard. Thank you for debating with me, I absolutely agree that doing all of these ideas, especially all at once is a bad idea. But then, I am all for trying it out city by city, state bay state. If it doesn't work then it will fail. I am all for protecting our constitution, but we still have to innovate and try new things when we recognize problems. I don't say that it WILL work, but I DO believe we should at least try it. If it doesn't hold up THEN we scrap it. If it does work THEN we implement it in other places too.
6:17 w How to make the American government work for the people? 1. End Citizens United and the ruling or legislation that says that a corporation is a person. 2. Pass legislation to end PACs, political action committees and their financial influence on political campaigns and passing legislation. 3. Legislate that Congress people and appointed law makers cannot become corporate lobbyists and go back and forth from government positions to lobbyists positions. 4. Pass legislation to stop insider stock trading by politicians and congress members.

Just want to set the record straight on a few things:
1. We have never received any funding from George Soros.
2. "Full democracy" refers to the term used by the Economist Intelligence Unit. It's the term they use to grade the health of a democratic government globally. You can read the report here: www.cnbc.com/2017/01/25/us-is-no-longer-a-full-democracy-eiu-warns.html

Kudos to Jennifer Lawrence for lending her voice, time, talent and, especially, her passion to this critical issue. Our current is so broken that it's gone beyond dysfunction...it's now toxic.

@@eleghari in Germany we have a saying

I think lobbying needs to be treated for what it really is. Bribery.
I don't disagree with any of the things this video says needs to be fixed.
The first step is to stop using the term 'lobbying.' It's a way to disassociate the practices of huge companies with what people think of as bribery. Instead of calling something 'lobbying,' we should just call it bribery.
Funny how corporation & special interest "lobby" while We The People petittion. It should be the other way around. We push and they beg.

Gotta love the libtards
genium me I agree with the video on the fact that our government is corrupted and the politicians are even more so and I strongly believe that we need to fix it.
This video is great. It’s from 2019, but it’s even more relevant today.
ever since i became politically conscious i've been against lobbying, our politicians should not be up for sale.

MrChen 06 Which part don’t you like? Because I think capping donations and preventing lobbying could do a lot for our government.

This should not be a left or right issue. We should all want a government that is more responsive to it's citizens relative to big money interest groups and corporations. I'm going to get more involved. Great initiative.

They call it a "Constitutional Republic", that is what America actually is. We have a series of laws that our democratically elected officials must abide by and must write new laws in accordance with but cannot violate. For example the freedom of speech in America. @@Pooua …I am not the one you asked but quite simply I want my vote to count, even if my vote IS a minority in my gerrymandered district... I want to be able to NOT have to choose between a republican or a democrat I don't like. I don't want that voting outside of the two parties be essentially abstaining. No, probably not, but I think it will get a LOT further on those issues then continually relying on the very people that perpetuate these problems for the sake of personal greed to fix it.
As I already wrote in comments elsewhere,
"Several of the ideas proposed are bad ideas, and I didn't see anything that actually identified corruption or showed a way to stop it. Gerrymandering is an imprecise term with no clear-cut point at which redistricting becomes gerrymandering. Automatic voter registration is a horrible idea; believe it or not, we actually don't need voters who don't know what they are voting about. Transparent political donations could easily lead to intimidating people from donating to controversial causes."
Some additional notes: The people who keep complaining about gerrymandering, most of the time, are Democrats. Attacking gerrymandering usually is a Democrat trying to swing an election his way.
"The Civil War in our country came about precisely because we allowed the uber rich to say their votes counted more then ours, that a slaveowner with 50 slaves had 31 votes, over his fellow citizens who were against slavery having only 1 vote, giving him the ability to gainsay the majority, undercutting all farmers who did not have slave labor and outvoting their cries against it."
That isn't the way that worked, at all. The only time that a slave counted for votes was when the federal government was deciding how many House representatives each state could get, and the slave only counted as far as giving the South more House representatives than they would have gotten without the slaves. The slave owner's votes did not count more than those of another citizen of his own state, all else being equal.
@@fryque I don't see that this video addresses any actual problem in government, particularly corruption.
