These videos are SO incredibly good! The only thing I'm missing is to see actual historical photographs for illustration/comparison. That would be a nice touch. Otherwise, this is currently my favorite YT series.
The uniforms were very carefully researched and recreated. For example, I drafted patterns for the breeches and dungarees from original pairs in my local costume museum. I also used some pieces inherited from my aunt who was a Land Girl.
huh? Quite “itchy” indeed! However after much wearing & numerous washings these fabrics season well and lose a fair bit of their scratchiness. Raw silk is the worst!
@Hillary Sanderson No, they are given the set curriculum and teach from it. Teachers don't just make up whatever they want to teach, there are rules. They can't just teach whatever they want, when they want.
Love this, my grandma was in the women’s land army and met my grandpa when she was working on a potato farm.. it’s so fascinating to take a look into the past
This is great to see. My maternal grandmother was a Land Girl. Through her work in the Women's Land Army, she got into nursing for the actual Army. Then after the War ended she became a paediatric nurse
I kind of love that many men (but not all) looked down on women for so long (some still may) and when the men were needed on the war front, the women took over all their responsibilities. They proved that they could keep a country running while the soldiers were keeping a country from being destroyed.
Just in case you needed a history lesson the women's land army was established to replace the men who had to be released for service .I don't think in any way women's roles during ww2 were looked down upon. Women played a vital role in SOE both in occupied Europe and in South East Asia . They also flew and delivered figters to RAF bases took over roles from the navy and army .Technically you might argue because Britain was in the front line from air and sea attacks I'm sure that their positions within the Air force and navy put them in harms way.
From the way your comment comes across, I get a hint of misplaced smugness. I prefer to think that the men appreciated and respected the women working and supporting the war effort, that they had love and a longing for the women back home who were their mothers, sisters, daughters and friends, that they weren't poisoned by some narrative that pitted men and women against each other, that they had the feeling they were all on the same team, with a common purpose, working toward the same goals.
What a brilliant little video. I knew a Land Girl quite well, her name "Mickey" Mitchell. Strong, independent and characterful, yet humble, she was an inspiration, as was her story. In my eyes a hero along with all the men who fought, every bit of her. They worked so very hard to help sustain our country. Cheers to the Women's Land Army, forever!
Again you make a treasure film about fashion alongside a tribute to amazing women. Bravo! We can feel the camaraderie that may have flourished between them in those hard times when almost each woman was touch by the lost of loved ones at the front. Love the tractor and the hay... Having said that, I so love breeches. I have a vintage pair from Ralph Lauren Country that are almost the same in colour and shape, just longer. I adore them. I wear them as regular garment and everything you say about them being comfortable is totaly true. ♡
I'm curious about the girl fastening her belt in the front. When I wear side fastening pants I wear my belt with the buckle on the side so I don't have to take half the belt out of the loops to use the restroom. I wonder which way the land girls would have worn it.
I haven’t seen any pictures of the belt used in the way you describe and it was part of the uniform for it to be seen buckled centre front, but the women did not always stick to the uniform guidelines!
Probably because the rules were probably written by men, Whitney's thinking is sound enough. Silly little thing you wouldnt think of unless you lived it. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve got a pair of similar pants. You usually only unbutton the top buttons or maybe the top and second, which you can do with out taking the belt out of the loops.
they would almost certainly have had the buckle at the front. you can't hip carry with a buckle in the way. it would also get in the way of the draw of a rack, hoe, brush ect. but if you are belly carrying a large front centre buckle can be used a third hand to transfer load to the belt. I love the fashion! Maybe not fashion, as it was for work, but it looks fashionable. And theie undergarments are what a lot of young women wear now, bralettes. I wish those pants would make a comeback.
DanceDiva The girls were frightfully proud of their uniforms, what they were trained for, and being seen in their WLA outfits. Yes, it's for work, but a great look. There are memoirs, you may like to research them.
Incredibly done,as always! You captured some really beautiful details here. On a more sombre note, I am terribly sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts are with you.
A great piece, my Mum would of loved it, but she would of told you, you would not wear your best undies to go and work in the field because; 1. Clothing was rationed and the dirt and dust would get ingrained into them, therefore ruining them, so you saved them for best. 2. You were lucky if you got any parachute silk to make your undies, unless a spiv had any (or the Americans). 3. They were not always comfortable to wear with the britches.
This series provides such unexpectedly deep insight into history. Having an idea of how people lived day to day gives context to to large events that one wouldn't even notices was missing, and CrowsEye is working hard to make the most of their angle on history. I don't even remember how I came across this channel. I don't watch much on clothing or fashion, though this channel has taught me that there's a lot of value in examining history through the lens of daily tasks. Not to mention that this is the first time I've ever come across anything more than a passing mention of the Women's Land Army, which is fascinating! Thank you for this series. I get more excited about new "Getting Dressed" videos than most things that pop up in my subscriptions.
This is fantastic! I know your channel focuses on many different time periods, but I would love to see a WWII WACS video like this one. Keep up the wonderful work!
Where do u get all your outfits, do u make them or something? I'm also really intrigued by ww2 to that was really helpful and by the way, the videos amazing- like always
So many girls came from the towns and had no idea of country life..and how hard it was. We couldn’t have managed without them. Also, the girls who took over running narrow boats on the canals. Hard, hard work.
Laura- Beth Dawson Aw! I wonder if that was quite unusual to keep a pet pig then whilst food was so heavily controlled. That sounds like it might’ve been a rather nice life. My grandma was sent up to Scotland when she joined up. Apparently the uniform wasn’t nearly good enough to keep her warm during the winters and she reported often coming back to the farmhouse with chilblains and being rather jealous of the girls who were sent down south for their service.
These videos are perfect. It's great to see such straight forward no nonsense videos. You cover all the facts, the clothes are accurate, the actresses are beautiful and it feels like there's a lot of research and production value on offer. You don't often see this on TH-cam so I just wanted to say well done :)
This is the Queen's era! I know she was in an actual army unit, not WLA, but its amazing to think about all these distinguished elderly women working hard for their country in their youth.
I recently bought an antique pair, and not only are they still perfectly wearable, the pockets are HUGE!!! I can carry my phone and water bottle in one pocket. The seat is also incredible as it comes up higher at the back of the waist so it can’t ride down when you’re squatting to work near the ground, or bending over.
I just discovered these videos, they are amazing! It would be really cool to see one of these done for the Women's Army Corps, the Women's Air Service Pilots, or the women who worked in factories during the war.
Lovely video, as per usual! There’s something so beautiful about women in those uniforms. I remember seeing a lady wearing it in an episode of Horrible Histories when I was a young girl and being absolutely in love! Thank you.
I'm serious when I say this CrowsEyeProductions , this is some of the best content I have ever seen on youtube. The lighting, the colors, the actresses, the music and the narrator really make you draw into these stories that you produce.
It’s so nice you dedicated this to Sharon, she lived opposite my mum. She was such a beautiful soul. Her and mum are in heaven now eating chips from the chippy together and laughing ❤
Such a wonderful, beautifully and lovingly made document. The colours and the light are so warm. Well done! I'll watch it again and again! Thank you so much
Thank you ,Crows ! With all that hard work in the outdoors they most likely had a healthy appetite . They probably ate well on the Farms . As far as the clothes I wondered about how they made out with rationing ? This video helped answer part of that question .
They also had to return their clothes when they left the WLA, though they seem to have been allowed to keep one item as a keepsake, which is why no complete sets of clothing survive, only random items. The WLA armband we used belonged to my aunt.
Pauline ,Thank you . This additional information makes you think even more about how it was back then . I guess they did what they had to do to keep things working . My Grandma was a Land Girl, too. Escaped the blitz in Bethnal Green, met my grandpa and they settled and built a farm together. Her best fried, Joan, stayed and married the neighbouring farmer's son. I'm moving to Bethnal Green soon, my thoughts are turning to Grandma and the thousands of women who did their bit. God bless them all.
To all that have served and is serving now, I thank you for your contributions. This reminds me of my grandmother when she told me her stories during world war 2. The day to day struggle under the Japanese Imperial army was one of the eye-opening stories. Thank you for coming up with these sorts of videos. It's a good learning tool. Lest we forget.
Men and Women, learn to sew, I did and I am never without a desired fashion, a needed alteration or a invented attire for work, play or social events. Of course I do buy and have a good wardrobe but having sewing skills, I can make anything from a kerchiefs and pillow cases to car covers, furniture upholstery and even embroidered ribbons for my granddaughters. I gave my daughter in law Singer Stylus for one Christmas, and her 3 daughters each have sewing machines. Sewing is not for everyone, but it starts with a single stitch, lovely takes it from there. TH-cam is a wonderful tutor and people are generous teachers here.
My grandmother on dads side served in the land army. She even got strafed by a German fighter once... she hid behind the mudguard and wheel on the far side to where the fighter was coming from. Fortunately it only used the machine guns, not the cannon and she was unhurt. She was a country girl, and had some funny stories about city girls learning how things worked in the country.
We have learned so much from your videos. Also, we are sorry for your loss. If you may, would you tell us something about her? Forgive the unfamiliarity. ;-)
Sharon and I went to university together, we both studied history and heritage, and we remained good friends ever since. She was one of the loveliest people I have ever met. Thank you for asking.
Very few WLA members wore their britches for actual work..very few got Wellington boots..and the 6 month cycled items rarely arrived. Those who said it was the best time of their lives referred to the friendships and freedom and not the work which left many physically disabled in later life. My friend Pauline was crippled with arthritis from picking beet in Lincolnshire. Nice video but a little rose tinted :)
There's a tv show called Land Girls that's on Netflix if anyone's interested! It had a pretty melodramatic plot but it did show more about how the land girls lives.
I've never heard of the Women's Land Army before, this was a very educational video! Do you think you might do something on male fashion the late 1880s or early 1900s next? There's many resources on women's fashion, but not as much on men's. I always enjoy your research and filmography, they really help to bring historical eras to life.
I'm from Minneapolis, so I perked up immediately when I heard ""bright, yellow Minneapolis mow line" like hey that's my city. I knew the Midwest supplied a lot of goods for the war, but it never clicked for me that manufacturing from Minnesota went to the UK during the war
Back in a more _self sufficient,_ day, where we knew what was right, and stepped up to make a positive difference in our communities. R.I.P. Sharon Ayres. May your memories never dim.
Does Dillon- I was just thinking , as i watched the world war video and this one, how nice it is to see how many people volunteered their time, upturned their lives even, to do their part and contribute to their country's effort. I find it difficult to imagine that anything close to that level of commitment could be seen today, in similar circumstances. I'm afraid everyone would be only concerned about themselves.
My wonderful mum was a land girl during WW2. She loved it. I still have her uniform including her shoes with the mud still on them.
Lol
She must have some good stories about it

I wish I could post one of my Mum's photos of her as a Land Girl. I think the uniforms showed on here are very accurate.
The uniforms were very carefully researched and recreated. For example, I drafted patterns for the breeches and dungarees from original pairs in my local costume museum. I also used some pieces inherited from my aunt who was a Land Girl.
Google image search brings up several actual historical WLA photographs.
so charming

I'm moving to Bethnal Green soon, my thoughts are turning to Grandma and the thousands of women who did their bit. God bless them all.
This video is a DREAM! All your videos are great but I love this one a little extra!
This is so cool, they're all so pretty but also strong and independent. Very impressed by them!! Love these videos
Could you please do a video on women getting dressed in the 1950s? Showing bullet bras, girdles and homemade clothes. Thank you!
We didn't wear clothes like that in the 50s.bullet bras . Haha
Bullet Bra's??...are they the super pointy ones?
To all that have served and is serving now, I thank you for your contributions.
This reminds me of my grandmother when she told me her stories during world war 2. The day to day struggle under the Japanese Imperial army was one of the eye-opening stories.
Thank you for coming up with these sorts of videos. It's a good learning tool.
Lest we forget.
My favorite era in terms of fashion and culture: the 1940s, 30s, 50s. Thank you for featuring apparel from the mid 20th century!
Give me this pullover goddamn ❤️ love these dressing series and this whole channel in general much love from Germany
Malena Sander I saw the pullover and was like I want 10
Hallo! I speak a little German!
not only this video is educational but it's also so satisfying to watch and listen to!
TV series land girls made more sense to me now after watching this. Thanks!
Great video. Shows what women do and have done since the beginning of time. Thank you.
I would still wear those pants today, they look very comfortable
I'm new to your channel and now I'm obsessed with it. Please keep making awesome videos! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah same
Honestly just appreciating how fantastic the outfits are
We have learned so much from your videos.
@@calicocloth Thank you very much.
Pauline Loven lighting a candle for her
wandering womble Thank you x
folks I will never get over how much I love these videos
I am sorry for your loss. Sharon must have been a wonderful lady. I love your story btw
I just recently found this channel. This is awesome! I love the calmness of each video.
I love those green sweaters!
Love a good corduroy. The side button trousers look fab!
ow God thank you so much for this channel. this is pure bliss
LOVE this approach!
This deserves a lot of views and likes in my opinion
I want a movie ..... I want it now😂 this woyld be such a great setting for a story!!
Fascinating! I had never heard of the Land Girls before!
This is the best thing I watched today. I don't how but it gave me inspirations.♥️ Thank u😊
I'm from Minneapolis, so I perked up immediately when I heard ""bright, yellow Minneapolis mow line" like hey that's my city. I knew the Midwest supplied a lot of goods for the war, but it never clicked for me that manufacturing from Minnesota went to the UK during the war
I love watching this and also we watched this at school!
Odee Dillon- my apologies, auto correct.
That's because we let libertine fuckboys who scream "taxation is theft" and wanna marry 12 y/o girls get their way.
You are just the best. Thank you
This was inspiring, motivating and almost brought a tear to my eye.
