    Thanks so much Leth - this video helps a lot since I'm a champ and I'm one of those players who goes on autopilot and just booms the ball when I have tons of space. You made me realize that I just need to relax and not panic all the time.

      Factssss

    • @dansbigfanguitarist
      @dansbigfanguitarist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, and it’s super important to be unpredictable with this. And when you have a lead, it’s ok to boom the ball in certain scenarios, but we all sometimes get mentally stuck in a repetitive loop of see ball hit ball. Another thing to avoid autopiloting is watching other players in your peripheral view instead of intentionally looking directly at other players and your tm8… in GC1, and I noticed when I’m slumping the most it’s cause I just don’t pay attention to any other players directly and just look at them with my peripheral vision instead of direct vision. But just glancing at all the other players once every few seconds and especially leading up to a challenge/fake challenge really helps with making quick, high level decisions and prevents poor challenges when trying to outplay….

    This is a good time to thank you Leth. Last night I got to Champ. Before this series relaunched, I was bouncing between Diamond 1 & 2. My takeaway from this video is to stop getting in my own way and cut down on immediately barreling through the ball. Seeing this play style reminds me I can slow things down and be more effective. Thank you again for continuing the series.

    First of all, I love the series! it's fun to see how different ranks take a different approach to the same game. However, you said that the educational value of this series might not be what it could be because you're flying through the ranks and you've got a lot more control than anyone else on the field. So I was thinking that maybe it's an idea for people to send in their games which you'd review. That way, everyone is overall roughly the same level and you can still add your commentary to the games and situations, with the additional advantage of being able to pause the game and draw arrows.

I guess I just need to put in the hours but this series is genuinely helping me a lot. I love the fact you're kinda following in Flakes footsteps here by not using tough mechanics because I really can't do them either and I feel like I should learn them after improving this patience thing and the basic mechanics like ground dribbles and driving around (mainly powerslides)

    Hey Leth, love your SSL series, there is always something to learn from them. U mentioned a couple of times about the comments where ppl don't recognize the level of the games u are playing, for example Champ. I would have to agree that I do recognize the style of play for many that i meet in Champ 1. But also there are lots of ppl that are way better that you see in this video. There are ppl doing flip resets, double touch goals, speed flips but also with a much higher level of gameplay for what you would consider Champ 1, at least in EU. There is just so much discrepancy between some players within the same level that it feels like they are smurfs or been carried here.
    Anyway enough ranting from me.
    All the best and keep up the work! :)

    In Champ(at least in mena, there's a HUGE rank difference with mena and other regions, but i digress.): we can do anything, we know EXACTLY what the right thing to do is, but there's huge inconsistency in executing it, but overall champ is where u double flip rest musty double tap but miss an open net(in MENA at least as i said).

    For those saying that the games seems slower or worse than their lower rank, here’s my take:
    Sometimes the games you play in may feel faster because you are rushing to make a play on the ball. Change of pace in your gameplay is important. Challenging or shooting quickly is just as important as controlling the ball with space and waiting for the moment to pass, flick, 50/50, or to stall for your teammate who is recovering.
    The reason some player may seem more mechanical in your rank may be because there’s so much of a skill gap (in say plat) with aerials and wall play. So the player who can air dribble in plat will take advantage of that and score more that way. But in say high diamond or above, more players are comfortable defending those types of plays and players may quit going for them.

    • @dansbigfanguitarist
      @dansbigfanguitarist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very accurate… this feeling of the game feeling “faster” or even “too fast” is usually just when you get stuck in a “I need to be fast” mindset and usually means that you’re not thinking enough about what’s going on… it’s so important to stay focused on watching, analyzing and planning your next step, but in a controlled consistent way

    • @idemus168
      @idemus168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree, as someone who has spent the last 3-4 seasons in C1-C2, and have reviewed many replays in this rank, I can firmly say this is weird gameplay for this rank. Speed flips become the norm in diamond, as does air roll on aerials. By the time you get to C1, not only do people not 'miss' the ball on aerials hardly ever, they are usually using directional air roll at least some. When someone has space like leth was giving them, it is VERY common, even in diamond, to carry the ball or ground dribble. The thing that is most odd that I see in pretty much every game is an air control play from the wall. If a diamond/champ player CAN take it off the wall, they WILL. Could be an air dribble, or a reset, ceiling shot, or just a simple shot. Everyone is different. The common theme is that they take it up the wall when they are not being challenged. It happens CONSTANTLY at this rank and I haven't seen it once in the last two videos. The thing that changes as I've become higher rank is that the play materializes faster, ie they take it up the wall on a break away and try to squeeze in a high shot or double to catch the opponent off guard.
      Now do I think we are all being hoodwinked by Leth who's playing in bronze and Danny is doing work changing ranks on the scoreboard?...no. I think what really happens is that when a fresh account is created, there is a different pool for each rank to be queued with for some form of rank inflation. Alternatively, there is some metric/statistic that determines playstyle to pair a player with over a number of games. I haven't nailed the exact details down yet exactly, but I have experienced it when creating new accounts and when getting people started in the game. I tend to place higher on new accounts and feel that higher ranks are easier on new accounts. My theory has always been that Psyonix wants new players to feel the classic sense of pride and accomplishment, so they artificially inflate the new player rank a bit. After the first so many games, it feels like it resolves to a normal ranked feel. It's not hard to imagine queues are more complicated than just matching you with an available player at your MMR. Activision or EA patented matchmaking code that would pair you with someone who has spent money before, why wouldn't Psyonix have more complex match making code to retain new players.

    • @ayden_136
      @ayden_136 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@idemus168 I think experiences will vary, and I’m not saying Champs are losing the capabilities of these mechanics, in fact they refine them more at this rank. I think a lot of plays are situational and based on a player’s play style. I have also spent the last 2ish seasons in Champ and I’m currently C2, and I have to disagree with speed flipping be the norm. I have seen a couple of people speed flip and out right beat me to kickoff, but most of the time I simple boost and singe flip kickoff awards me a first touch or an even kick off. I just think, like Leth has said before, that different things work at different ranks. People do go for wall plays, air dribbles, and flip resets, but I’d say the average Champ team is prepared to challenge and save these type of plays. This may be why we aren’t seeing them as much in these videos since Leth’s defense, mainly positioning, is very solid from the start.

    • @yoral
      @yoral 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The games he gets are defiantly worse than the average lobby, I believe it's because Leth is slowing down the lobby by playing how slow he is which messes with how everyone else plays

    Loved the cameo from shivaxi joining the chat, haha that was fun hearing him join
    Edit: also, I've thought you generally play these series like someone with the mechanics of someone about four divisions lower in the rank you're currently in with the decision making and discipline of a pro. Some of the stuff that helps me most is seeing how much you can slow the game down by seeing what your opponents and teammates are going to do and taking your time setting up the next possession.

    Leth, you should not only explain the strategy of the game, but also these little details, for example - when EXACTLY and why you toggle camera, or when EXACTLY and why you do power slides, or when you hit the ball (striking) on which angle coming to the ball to what rotation hit EXACTLY are you doing (only one direction rotation or mixed) and so on examples... I mean I know this kind of details a viewer can see by watching the video but 1: it's a quick pace game so it's not very comfortable to recognize everything very well (you have to slow down the video or rewind it, not very convenient) and 2: when adding explanation to it and how to prepare for this kind of movements/actions it will be better to understand and to try to reproduce. I hope you see my comment (I only watch your videos here and I can only comment here below your videos). Nice videos, keep it up! :)

    Can you go into how you should defend the 2v1 on that passing play when Shavaxi set you up in that final game? The one when you said he made good use of the field.

    Regarding the "auto-pilot" thing and booming the ball : i think it's a biger problem than just your own touches. I'm C2 with almost 1,5k hours, and controlling the ball and then doing something with it is still incredibly difficult because each small touches i have to make must be good in order to do what i want, whereas a big clear is only one touch, and if i do it right, it can change the course of the game, atleast for the on-going action. Also, my opponents and teamates all assume i am going to boom it. So if i dribble i might take my opponent by surprise, but once they've seen what i'm doing they'll reposition and challenge accordingly, whereas my teamate, who also migh think i'll boom the ball, will by then be out of play. I know that controlling and dribbling IS the way to do it especially when you have space in front of you but the skill required to do it is sometimes not on par with your current rank.

    I don't really know if it is just the fact that you have so much more game sense than me or that I just watch and don't play against your opponents, but my games in d3 look a lot faster, I think that it is just a skill issue but since high plat 3 everyone is speedflipping in my games and doing for crazy double tap aerials.

      last time when tousand plats claimed they can do speedflips turned out to be just sideflips in a sunlesskhan video. just bcoz they hit the ball before you doesnt mean they are speedflipping but i can be wrong as well. i am peaking my highest rank gc1div2 rn and not everyone is speedflipping and more than %60-70 cant do crazy double tap aerials but who knows maybe those plats are stuck there bcoz of their teammates or they are one of those million smurfs violating rocket league code of conduct freely without any punishment...

    I've been wondering regarding this, which is that I only play casual mostly (I wanna get my skills down really well before i even attempt ranked) and despite being at what I feel is only a high to mid plat level I can do a lot of the things rather consistently that diamonds and low champ are supposed to do easily. Curious if the sheer randomness and inaccuracy of casual MMR has something to do with that, forcing me to learn how to aerial and such before I even get very consistent at ground plays.
    Genuinely on pace to have aerials become so much easier for me that I'm gonna have to actually avoid the ground half the time to be good at the game.

    1. Is there a certain distance when shadow defending?

    Leth, what are your camera settings? I'm noticing that you pretty much always have a smooth view of the ball, whether it's behind your or wherever. For me, I find myself having to click constantly flipping ball cam on or off to keep looking where I want to. And that often doesn't work if the ball is up overhead or somewhere, and it can be really jarring. Is this something that just a simple camera setting could change?

    • @Zalamandar
      @Zalamandar ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the description for Leth's camera settings.
      As for having a smooth view of the ball, I think the main difference is Leth's positioning. He's always talking about being behind the ball and facing the play and such, and he often comments, mainly in the lower ranks, how players throw themselves in and get stuck under the ball.
      Leth has thought through his camera settings, so they're pretty refined, but I think his consistent, smooth view of the field is due to his positioning.

    • @Porphyro83
      @Porphyro83 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zalamandar Appreciate that. I'll be taking a look at that for my own settings. I recently changed my button mapping for my rear view camera, as I was never really using it (had it set to R3, which I find hard to press in and actually still effectively play). That's one thing I think I just need to get better about. The specific situations where I find his videos to look just so much better than my own experience is when he's driving back toward his own goal and watching the play behind him, then it just smoothly pans to in front of him (think when he's retreating for a corner boost and then turning into the play). I don't really understand how to make the camera operate and look that way for myself, and it feels like it makes a big difference in your ability to stay with the play and react quickly and accurately.
