I picked up a banjo Feb 16 and your lessons are out standing. Especially teaching the simpler ways and breaking every thing down . Ii am 59 and never played but your lessons have me hooked thank you..
What a great lesson. I've just bought a Banjo and this makes sense of banjo picking. ( as compared to my previous experience on guitar.) Thank you. Subscribed. 👍🏻🇬🇧
Great job! I really appreciate your focus on which fingers pick which notes AND that you included that in your tab (something that others don't do). This has given me a number of "drills" to practice over and over, slowly increasing the speed. Once I get that down I'll change chords as I practice these drills, especially while practicing the thumb lead on different strings; that will allow me to accent the root of each new chord. Thanks again.
great lesson - been wanting to learn. Bought a banjo over a year ago and can't get past the note reading and melodies like "Mary had a little Lamb". Rolls and real bluegrass songs are what I was looking for! Glad I stumbled onto your channel
Melody lines can be played over anything. It is usually more simple to play them over the square roll, and that will sound "square". The forward roll adds a syncopation to the melody line, occasionally picking melody notes with the index finger as you roll through. This is all a matter of style and taste though, each player tending to prefer one or the other more frequently.
I really don’t know the word, ‘syncopation,’ but I sure understand that rythmic sounds. So I just catch it by ear. Persistence, Patience & Perseverance pays. By the way can you also give examples of a song you can apply those rolls on. It helps a lot since we would be able to identify the 2/4 or 3/4 beats etc. Gospel tunes? Honestly, you teaching & explanation work for me. Just 8 mths now and rolling and stumbling on😄. Love from M’sia.
A nice lesson which, as a beginner, would have taught me a lot, except for the fact that the sound does not correspond with the finger/ thumb movements. Rather off putting

should be "outstanding."
I'm English living in Cyprus and your lesson is the bees knees mate. Cheers!!
Hi DA,
I am a novice and think calling out the string numbers would help people like me to pick up these different roles.
Beginner player and struggling as well, I can relate to your teaching better than most online lessons, thanks..
This is what I've been looking for as a beginner

DAbanjo Thanks 😊
I didn't know Captain Obvious played the banjo
A metronome is ur best friend to keep from loping the rolls.
Thanks:
Are melody lines generally played over the square/alternate roll rather than the forward roll?
