  • Good news and not so good news.
I received news that my new mudguard has arrived but have been told that self servicing my motorcycle has invalidated my Warranty. (Please don't shoot the messenger)
I got the touring screen and wonder if it's of any value and the microphone has packed in on my Ghost XL pro camera.
    There's never a dull moment.
please send any photographs with a short description of who you are, where you are, the bike, bikes name if it has one to

I prefer the view with the Speedo showing. Like to see that you're on the Classic. Would be better with the screen removed though. I have a classic and a Meteor and run both without a screen as I like to feel the wind in my face. My Supernova meteor came with a screen as standard, but I prefer the looks and the ride without it, so it was off within a week. Nice channel, nice content, nice music... Nice job!

I'm inclined to agree , and the screen maybe off soon as it seems to be too small to offer any protection and seems to just increase turbulence.

Thanks, I watched yours too, enjoyed it, and subscribed! Best of luck with your channel. I think it's part of the ownership experience, it's a very simple, robust well honed bike so I'm hoping that if they have the confidence to offer a 3 year warranty, then I probably won't need it. It'll be over serviced by me anyway😉

Hi Keith, Nice video, I love seeing everyone's bikes! You must have a great memory to remember all of them while making a video. I am partial to teh lower camera mount, I like seeing your bike's instrument panel and headlight. Gives the actual riding feel, but either way is great to join in on the ride. Take care and stay safe!

Hi Wally, good to hear from you.
Remembering was easy on this one,( I had a note on the tank.) Then I got home and none of the audio came out, I was hacked off so thought I'll have to do a voiceover. I'd sooner do it " live" though, I think in many ways it's more original. My mind seems to work best when it doesn't know where it's going to?
I've got something coming up soon that I reckon you might be interested in. You'll see. Can't say too much but let's just say you may spot one of your old bikes!?...

The screen isn't my cup of tea aesthetically, but that's just great if you like the way it looks. Unfortunately, it's not so good for filming through. It takes the footage down to third level territory, in that seeing something with one's own eyes is the first level, seeing the same thing shot with a camera is the second level, and then the screen (which is "clear", but not really; we can see the screen itself, and there is low but easily detectable distortion) is the third level. I used to have a Honda CX650 (a larger displacement of the CX500 you show in the video, but the swan song of the CX line made for just 1 year - 1983) that I rode year round here in Pennsylvania, and I had a screen for it that I fitted in November and removed in March. Each time I removed it for the spring I felt liberated, and the motorcycle felt like a brand new machine. I wouldn't do it again for protection from the cold; I would just gear up. I do understand the appeal for extended highway riding, but I avoid highways like the plague! Thanks for the video!

News flash! It's off, as I'm dropping the bike off to have an exhaust fitted, I know that's not necessary but the company want to take pictures of the bike with there Silencers on so I thought it best to return it to stock.

Sadly the AA are a mere shadow of the organisation they used to be. They used to have a promise of attending within an hour which I know from experience they used to more or less hit 30 years ago. Now when you break down and log a break down with them you will wait for hours and hours. Especially if you break down on a bike. If your bike is less than 3 years old I would suggest ringing RE Assist. They attended me within an hour and a quarter on my Himalayan

Wonderful to see the screen and gauges with the road ahead. Great! On the warranty thing which I mentioned on one of your other older videos recently...I want to keep my 3 yr unlimited mileage warranty on my brand new Meteor so decided I would let my dealer do the first service and any subsequent annual services. Then take over the servicing myself after the warranty has run out. I'm an ex-tech so it's not a p problem for me and most people can do their own work on these bikes with minimal tech skills as long as they can use a few basic tools correctly and read up on it first. But I noted there is a 3000 miles 'inspection service' that according to the RE owners manual MUST be carried out at an RE dealership. Even my dealer has told me it must be carried out by them or another RE dealer. Considering this 'inspection service' does not require any special skills, no parts are expected to be required either, I thought this a bit strange as many other makes of motorcycle require an inspection service but do not require the main dealer to carry it out.
Therefore, I contacted RE customer services in writing (email) about this and made the point no parts are required and no special skills. The cost of having a dealer do this is variable and sometimes extortionate thereby making ownership somewhat more expensive than anticipated. They (customer services) responded very quickly reiterating what the manual says and that it must be done at a dealership for RE or a third party VAT registerd workshop. BUT...to make sure they were contacting their warranty department to ascertain for sure what the position is. Again the RE warranty department very quickly came back to me in writing (email) to tell me that the 3000 mile inspection service is OK to be carried out by the owner. No dealer needed to do that work. THE WARRANTY WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED. This is conditional with the owner using any RE parts that might be found to be needed (very unlikely) and these would have to be fitted by an RE dealer. This is great news as it means I only have to pay for 3 services to maintain my 3yr warranty...the first 300 miler, the first annual service, and the second annual service. After that I can self service all the time. I would point out that I am only going to dealer service because I've currently got a health issue that is temporarily ongoing which means servicing the bike is going to be a slow slightly painful job. I will be ok to take over the servicing much later.
The other thing to point out is that RE were only referring to the 3000 mile inspection service, NOT any of the annual services at 6000 miles.
Now referring to your mudguard. It depends how much you are bothered by your current situation. But I doubt very much if the RE and dealer position would hold up in a small claims court. As long as you didn't deliberately or accidentally damage your mudguard then not having it dealer serviced would not affect you consumer rights to have this replaced under warranty.

Personally I think dealer servicing is just another rip off. I always service my own bikes (but they are so far out of warranty that it is irrelevant) as I like to know that it is done correctly. I fully understand that many people are not comfortable or able to do self service which is a pity as they get royally rogered by the dealerships. The rise of technology laden bikes makes it even more difficult for the home mechanic due to the need for expensive diagnostic kit when computer says No.

Only ever had one dealer do a proper service on a bike in over 50 years . That was from a 5 star Honda dealer around 197I ,on new Honda bike . The first service was free including oil ,everything checked ,even the tyre pressures . The only time I have put in a bike since was if the bike was brand new ,under warranty ,every time I have had to redo the service myself . Once I know a new bike isn’t a Friday afternoon lemon ,I junk the warranty & service repair & rebuild engines & rest of bike myself . The money saved more than pays for the odd special tool or parts if needed . Also I always carry a suitable tyre or inner tube repair kit , an on board tool kit plus a universal throttle & cable repair kit , spare fusses ,gaffer & electrical tape ,spare bulbs & cable ties , in case of puncture or minor breakdowns .

My dealer, as mentioned in previous video, was 1200 miles away. He said warranty was fine as long as I kept precise records . Lets also not forget a part of dealer incomes are garnered from warranty services. Royal Enfields are designed to be self serviced, indeed they post instructional videos on just how to do so. I'm not sure I would trust someone else working on my bike, and if they did, I would certainly check it over. View through the screen is just fine. Always nice to watch that little red needle. 😉

I suspect the warranty issue hasn't been tested in law. Dealers will refer to the manufacturer, customers to the sale of goods act, and round it goes. It could come down to REs lawyers versus an individual, which would cost more than any motorcycle service. I have sympathy with a shop presented with a knackered engine because a valve has dropped in a botched self service. I have less time for a completely unrelated issue being referred back to the service record. The answer is to charge a bit more for the bike, and throw in a "free" first service which I think RE do, or did, in the home market.

      Hi, many thanks for commenting.
      I couldn't agree more.
The dealer did actually say that at a previous place that he had worked a warranty claim did go to court when the dealer refused warranty work because it had been self-serviced. Apparently, according to him, the customers claim was thrown out as he was not suitably qualified to conduct the service. However, it is impossible to know the exact details of the case.andvwhat had or had not been done to the bike.

      @shottostravels  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks for commenting, I would hope that they would want it the day before the service too. As it needs to be stone cold for the valve checks. If you're comfortable around a few basic spanners, have a go yourself. I did.

I'm in a similar situation to Alex, 35 miles down a dual carriageway (A38) to the nearest dealers. I have found an alternative route of lots of lanes, and could enjoy a bimble to the dealers using my Beeline sat nav. The issue is, as has been mentioned, is it needs to be ridden there the day before, as a cold engine is required for valve tappet adjustments. Therefore I either stay overnight in a B&B or my wife and car gets involved!! Alternatively my dealer could probably charge me around £100 to pick up and return the bike!! I carried out the initial simple interim serviced my previous RE, a 2020 Bullet 500 under warranty from the same dealer. At the time I understood from him that he as a dealer was not phased by people doing their own servicing. He said afterall RE produce videos of personal servicing. Perhaps dealers have now been instructed by RE to be more strict with warranty rules, perhaps since they took over the distribution of bikes and spares in the UK. I don't know, I'm just guessing.
I, like you, prefer to carry out my own servicing if possible, even though I am not a trained mechanic. I have more experience with two strokes, mainly 50s Francis Barnetts!!
I'm still determined to do my first service which includes the valve adjustments. Thanks for your thoughts and encouragement. It's this first service that RE dealers seem to have a tight grip on their customers with!!

I'm just in the process of buying a classic 350 and spoke to my dealer about service and warranty and he said you can take it to any Vat registered garage and as long as they use royal Enfield parts your warranty is ok so who knows what to do

Thanks for commenting. Do that then if that's what he says, mine didn't say that. They do seem to vary. Enjoy you're new bike, you'll love it, send me a picture!

I think I'll do it myself....at least I know it's done then I think I read somewhere that if you fit genuine parts they have to honour claims but again who knows. Will send you a pic

Please do. I've told you on the Vid what my dealers told me but it does seem to vary dealer to dealer. 👍

If you are competent enough to adjust your own valve clearances why don’t you just fit your own mudguard?

Good question. I did offer, they said that they require the old one back and that it would only take an hour. So I can wait. They also said if it gets damaged whilst fitting it is down to them so I thought OK. Why would I do it if they'll do it for nothing?

Take the screen off, in the event of an accident, they can do an awful lot of damage to the rider. Anyone intending to self-service a bike, either needs to be properly qualified to do so, or buy a low mileage used one.

@shottostravels2713 , in reference to service, had first service done at main dealers for both interceptor and sm650, after that do myself or local guy who does my vfr and harley and my wife's little scooter which I will send you a photo of

Have you checked for updraft from the lower edges of the screen? As I'm sure you know, a screen compresses the air as it passes through it. The pressure is then released at the edges of the screen and this creates turbulance as the high pressure air from the front of the screen rushes into the void behind the screen. Use some tape and some 6 inch strands of wool to make tell tails around all of the edges of the screen. Go for a ride and see what the tell tails are doing. I have quite small screen on two bikes and no screen on a third. The bike with no screen creates less wind noise then the others. Re DIY servicing I get my bikes dealer serviced during the warranty period. As a prospective buyer, I am very wary of home serviced bikes and I would need a good test run before buying. There are too many "TH-cam trained" amateur mechanics about these days.

All very fair. I wasn't really aware of the points that you have made.
I have had some poor dealer service over many years on motorcycles. A stamp in the book doesn't always mean it's been looked after properly?🤔
I have bought used bikes off some very knowledgeable people who have self serviced and wouldn't, not buy simply because it isn't fully stamped up. For example, an " enthusiast" bike owner will do his valves as and when he deems it necessary, he won't wait till the book tells him he should. As things crop up he ( or she) will deal with it, whatever it is. A complete Amateur who doesn't have the tools or knowledge will go down the dealer servicing route because he or she doesn't have the necessary knowledge or tools. It doesn't always come down to cost.

Not only did i think that screen slightly distorted the view I've got to say all that scaffolding looked awful, put it this way it would never appear on my bike.

Thanks Ian, I don't think it looks "awful" but think it's too small to offer any protection and seems to just increase turbulence.
I'm not sure it'll last long.

Regarding the warranty Lexmoto used to say as long as the bike is serviced by a VAT registered mechanic, then warranty claims will be honoured. I use a local mechanic for the more complex jobs I don't want to do. If I bought a brand new bike, I think I'd have the first and maybe second service and put some miles on it just to make sure there are no major issues like fuel pump, speedos sticking etc
