I have heard these songs today after at least 30 years. I am now 60 years old. But when the title aalap started, I was 12 again, watching the film with all the grandeur of the production. Wow! The power of music!
The music of Alaap is timeless. Who were the musicians? The drums are beaten SUPERBLY. It is as if the sweetest rhythms with that mysterious voice were designed to be together. PURE PERFECTION. If Europe ranks France highest in culture then India is Aisa's France. THE MUSIC OF ALAAP SEEMS TO BE ABOUT LOVING, LONGING, AND WANTING SOMETHING THAT NO LONGER EXIST.
Just a small correction: The instrument used in the "Alaap" is Pakhwaj, not drum. It is an Indian instrument. And I politely request you not to compare India with France. Both the countries have their separate culture and traditions, and both deserve respect separately. So it would be better not to compare both. Wd like to gently correct Ms/Miss Anju Agarwal. Pakeezah had 2 music composers, the great Naushad Saheb, who composed the background score & all the typical classical songs sung by Raj Kumari & others. All the other mujra & love songs were composed by another great, Ghulam Muhammedji, once a dedicated assistant of Naushadji. This was the former's greatest landmark film, but unfortunately, he didn't live long enough to bask in the glory of its immense popularity...he died a few years b4 the release of this film.
One of the best albums ever produced BY Naushad...what a lovely Icon..A film and novel Pakeezah is for ever living...could watch hundreds of times.Wah Meena Kumara Ashok Kumar and the my best Raaj Kumar.
