the design of the details at the bow (+ everywhere else) are perfect. Beautiful.
There is so much thought going into the reconstruction of Yaba.
I have a feeling that the shipwrights are enjoying working on Yaba - from the normal maintenance they do on the fishing boats etc.

Wow Yaba is looking fantastic I can't believe how far she has come now from being the old rotting wreck she is going to be an amazing beautiful sailing vessel. Cheer up Ben your hard work is worth it.

The craftsmanship of the builders is amazing. The older builder who does all of the fine details and enjoys a smoke is amazing. There is no way that his skills will be fully passed along. I know the crew is shy and camera averse, but they are the stars of your journey - less the mini columns. If you could ever run a side episode on their past/history I would be more hooked than I already am.

With EVERY episode, it never ceases to amaze me at the incredible skill, craftsmanship, and outright artistry that your "carpenter" crew shows. Power tools, handled like a scalpel in the hands of a surgeon, never simply satisfied with "OK", but serving ALWAYS for "perfect".
Yaba has been almost restored to her original lines, and is looking ALMOST ready to take on the waves.
MANY THANKS for sharing your adventure... :-)

It’s so good to hear Caillou’s happy little bark in the background and see him in the video again. Things are progressing nicely and a lot of work is getting done. Just wishing the rain would stop and allow you to get a good head start on all the caulking and sealing of the planking and other woodwork. I know I’m impatient to see it and I can’t even guess how anxious you both are. Till next week, have a wonderful and restful weekend!!!

The forward mast ist called "foremast" and your aft mast is called "mainmast" since your ship is a schooner. On a ketch you have the mainmast in front of a mizzen mast. (In German language the forward mast on a schooner is also called schooner mast, but I'm not sure if that's also a thing in englisch.)

Salud 🤙

    Mizzen / misaine / mezzana...
1:05 Ben is correct... he would be in French, not in English
A tricky evolution of the word thorough European countries, languages and boat building techniques.
The mizzen, originally the middle mast, shifted forward in French and other romance languages and aft in English.
Colombus for example called "mezzane" the middle mast of his discovery carracks. "Mezzane" was the Genovese for "middle".
When (16th) century 2 masts appeared to be better than 3 for middle sized ships (speed, maneuverability, construction cost), French shipyards dropped the foremast mast, so "misaine" became the new foremast, when Brits got rid of the stern mast, so "mizzen" shifted aft.
18th century, age of sail, return of the 3 masted like the famous 74 gun warships. Masts kept their names, regardless etymology:
    - misaine / grand-mat / artimon in France
    - fore / main / mizzen masts in GB.
20th century, yachting era. Once again short-handed crews got rid of 1 or 2 masts.
2 masted yachts came in 2 types:
    - Ketch: grand-mat / artimon (no misaine) in French (my Isis), main / mizzen (no fore mast) in English
    - Schooner: misaine / grand-mat (no artimon) in French, foremast / mainmast (no mizzen) in English (your Yabá)

To add one more language here are the German terminologys:
      -Ketch: Großmast / Besanmast
      - Schooner: Schonermast / Großmast
If a schooner carries a gaff sail on the formats this sail is also called a "Schonersegel"
      Hope you find that interesting.

      @@FlyingConey interesting thank you.
Is Besan a direct transliteration of the similarly sounding English mizzen? Or does besan have a separate meaning on its own? Note that Dutch has quite the same word.
I like schonermast. It makes sense because this mast is specific to schooners.
Großmast on the other hand is just the logical translation of grand-mât / mainmast
Any other language? Especially romance languages? I'd like to spot in modern languages some remains of old marine words used by Middle-Age Mediterranean sailors

Looking better every episode, a wonderful transformation, but please round off those columns 🙂 You don't have to run them through the dreaded lathe but wood looks so much nicer with even a gentle radius.
