One thinks of Sibelius as an orchestral composer, and many of his piano works are light. Not so these ten pieces, which reveal him as a skilled and inventive master of the keyboard. I first knew him through #9, called Romance in a piano album from which my mother often played. Fascinating to hear it played in what I assume is its original edition. When she (and later, I) played it, the staccato notes had been edited out. We also played it with what I'm sure would be considered unforgivable schmaltz! For all that, it made me a lifelong die hard Sibelius fan.

It saddens me that not many people are familiar with Sibelius' piano compositions, thanks for sharing!

There is a story of Sibelius's children asking why he writes all those piano works, even though they are nowhere near the quality of his best works. His answer was "in order for you to have bread and butter".

I know this story! :D but he did not mean of opus 24 as this one was done way before he got any debts to pay back.

That was during WWI when his main publisher was in Germany, at war with Russia and therefore Finland as well. He had to make do with small pieces for the domestic market.

these are beautiful. many of them remind me of blumenfeld, and the soaring melody in no. 3 seems to be a wonderful little Schumann reference! from the symphonic etudes I believe, and what a marvellous melody it is!

Excelentes.

There are many gems in this exquisite collection of piano pieces, which preferably could be played much more than they are.

These are so gloriously beautiful. I rarely think of Sibelius as a piano composer, but I'd say any of these miniatures is right up there with his best orchestral pieces!

Not necessarily. Perhaps it's the fact that it's a lot more depressing when someone requests you to do a video then pour out all of your time for it, only for the video to end up being blocked.
