- A great fan of Hugh Masekela's music, Nelson Mandela managed to smuggle out a letter to him from prison, expressing his good wishes on Masekela’s birthday in 1985. Masekela was inspired to write "Bring Him Back Home" in response, a composition that was released on his next album, “Tomorrow,” in 1987.
Fast forward nearly 30 years: This is Hugh Masekela’s anthem performed live at The White House on International Jazz Day, by a group of all-star musicians including, of course, Hugh Masekela, alongside Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marcus Miller, Bobby Watson, Till Brönner, Kris Bowers, Kendrick Scott, Lee Ritenour and last but not least, Eli Degibri. All introduced by the one and only, Sting!
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the International Jazz Day 2016 All-Star Global Concert from the White House, with artists performing throughout the White House and on the South Lawn. The concert was broadcast across the United States on April 30th - International Jazz Day - as an ABC network television special and streamed around the world by the United Nations and UNESCO.
