I played through the first one on mame last night as I preordered this and couldn't wait, and I found it quite easy to get through on one credit. Whatever the default rom difficulty settings were, I don't know. I was using a PS4 controller. Anyway I will hold off now for number 2 and the widescreen.. My thumb was dead after beating on the PS4 x button as there is no auto fire in the arcade.. I thought it was a very fun shmup but not hardcore.
@@SwitchWatch It's possible the rom was a lower difficulty setting? I only have the one rom named vasara.zip. I have no idea of the region or anything although it did look japanese.. Thanks for the props, but really shmups are the one genre I am good at.. Am world no 2 in sky force reloaded (switch leaderboards), literally less than 1% score away from the top spot, but to do what has to be done to get it, I haven't been able to. That guy is better than me for sure. We all have our strengths.. I find bullet hells easy and boring cause they have predetermined patterns and it always involves just dodging and sitting in the one place till the next pattern.. Vasara certainly not bullet hell but more of the kind of shmup i enjoy.. Note, I am only good at vertical shmups, 20 years later and i still SUCK at r type for example.. I am really weak at horizontals.. so there you go!

Really insightful review of a title that without a doubt will not get much coverage from vg sites. I love the aesthetics of this game because feudal japan with mechas is not an overexplored trope, so that's a plus for me. I think the psykyo collection is a bit more appealing, but then again this port is very reasonably priced and I hope we keep getting these kind of releases.
Yeah this is slightly better value compared to the Psikyo games, but they are mostly better than this just about. Still, I love covering a shmup. Wish we could cover them all! We had Raiden V in but just no time to do it.
On "easy" mode is practically impossible to finish even with infinite lives. If it's possible it will be one percent of one percent of one percent of people who got lucky somehow. And as the reviewer mentions about credit spamming, you can't on the last level.
No, the game was originally made in this aspect ratio. If they filled up the screen the game would be horribly distorted. Plus, narrow screens are much better for vertical shmups.
Thanks! I think it's a great way to see if an arcade game can transition well to consoles. If you're failing your way to the end of the game, maybe it's time to tweak it just a little.
I am really impressed with this.. I got it from the AU eshop for just $7.50 AU, and what a bargain.. even now at 14.99 AU (around 9.5 USD) It's a bargain.. I have never played the second game and i far prefer it, and I am really pleasantly surprised by the widescreen remake and power ups (as well as better music)! I hope ANY even slight fan of shmups buys this and supports the dev, so they can port some of their other games in future. Can you believe when i played the first game in mame I had no idea you could do a charge attack and deflect bullets LOL. I was just tapping the PS4 controller button like a nutter LOL. Anyway, this is good stuff.. I have to take value into account, and so I give it, as a real shmup fan, a solid 8/10. Believe it or not I could not play it till 11.30 PM on the 15th which was the release date, I thought they weren't gonna get it out on time! "you can't play this yet, check the eshop for details".. i checked, and it said playable from 15th LOL! I had 23.5 hours on the 15th it wouldn't let me launch. Cheers!
@@SwitchWatch Only played for ten minutes, 3 mins on each game adjusting settings and checking it out quickly, as i was exhausted by midnight.. However I will try complete all three this weekend, but will not be going for high scores - yet. I just want to play them through for now. On hard it certainly seemed challenging. Tate mode helps a lot with the 2 older games.. It's so clever, they keep in tate mode whilst you are in the older games, through menus and all (ahem, hamster arcade ports) but switch back when you go to the main menu so you can then go to the new game in widescreen. They really thought of everything.

I agreed with you, I'm not of fan of these limited either. Collection of Mana is also an example of having physical copies be made in smaller quantity. Luckily I have preordered it so I don't have to be worry about not being able to get it in time and now I just wait until the game to come out. Also sorry I haven't subbed to you, I thought I had, I watched some of your reviews and I do enjoy finding out games that does interest me.
I can understand some publishers not having the funds to do physical runs and I'm sure this developer isn't the wealthiest, but it's when the mid-sized publishers like Team 17 do it that annoys me the most.

Does the game NOT have full screen? What's up with those pictures on the side?
No, the game was originally made in this aspect ratio. If they filled up the screen the game would be horribly distorted. Plus, narrow screens are much better for vertical shmups.

PS there were no difficulty settings at all accessible on the mame rom by pressing F2, so I will give it a go in hard mode now .
