I Painted My Horse Trailer With Rustoleum Paint

  • Hi Everyone!!!!
This may seem like a crazy video, but I had to show you the paint job I did on my horse trailer......using Rustoleum paint!!!!
When I bought this horse trailer, it was in really bad shape. There was basically no paint on the sides, front and back. So when we got it home, we washed it,and then primer painted it to protect it from the elements.
I had always intended to get it painted, but that never happened. So I started watching TH-cam videos of people painting cars and trailers with Rustoleum, and I thought why not try it? It couldn't possibly look any worse than it did.So I did it! I took a quart of paint, and started painting, and what you see is the finished result.
No, it isn't professional, but I didn't have the money to shell out to get it painted, so I did it myself. I used a paint brush, because that is what I had,but I bet if you had a foam roller, you could get a really nice finish coat on it. And now my horse trailer is protected from being outside all the time, and it looks a LOT better than it did before!
And I am only planning on going to a few local shows next summer, so this should work just fine to get us there, once I fix the ramp, because I am a little worried about that, and will have that professionally fixed before loading my horses.
    Just another way I DIY'd a horse project :)

nice job i restore old horse trailers. i use rustoleum on some and full automotive paint with stripping and 4 clear coats. better than new. to prevent paint from running i paint them indoors my barn,i use heat lamps to cure the paint. i never had a run. but i have also been paint trailers only for over 30 years. i buy a old trailer looks terrible when i am done they look new.and i sell them at a profilt. people seem to think that a ugly trailer wont haul a horse lol so new paint and sometimes a new ramp i use mine for horse and my motocycles. also new led lights inside and out witha nice loading lightt bar in the rear.

I’m doing the same thing with my older horse trailer. I’m doing one section at a time and using the exact paint, you are. I’ve had the roof sanded and primed and caulked on the seams. I’ll be rolling the paint on the top, and a brush on the side at the bottom of the roof. I’ll be putting 3 coats on, once I start. Will keep you posted

Rust-oleum paint oil based used it on a old school bus. Scuffed up the metal and rolled on the green. Cheap easy and held up the ten years I had the bus. Only started to chip away on the fiberglass hood (couple years later) which was to be expected. Worked great on the metal.

I’m about to do it too. I was going to use their tractor paint but I have seen this used on the inside of a truck and it looked AMAZING. And I know it’s STRONG.

Looks good - Nothing bad at all using rustoleum paint - I use it all the time on my trailers. You did a good job. Might want to try using a paint brush and a small roller - the roller will work good as well just to let you know. But all and all from what it look like then and now you did do a good job on your trailer.

I’m also using the rust oleum white gloss oil paint to paint my horse trailer. I’m also using a brush. It’s amazing I looked up this video and here you are doing the same thing I’m now, doing. Your trailer looks great, by the way.

I thought about using that paint until I found the tractor paint at the local feed store. The tractor paint dries fast and is heavy duty.

Well I came over to this video to reply about my own experience painting my new (to me) horse trailer with Rustoleum! It's a TON OF WORK!!!! Just priming it took me several work sessions of at least 5 hours each!! Then yesterday I was able to apply my first coat of Rustoleum oil based paint. Took me 6 hours to get that first coat on and I didn't do the roof or back doors!! Man am I exhausted! LOL

I'm glad I saw this!! I just bought a used trailer yesterday and it needs work. Quite a bit more rust than I initially saw before buying. I bought sealant to fill the little rusted out holes and Rustoleum to spray primer it. I never even thought about using the paint though!! How many quarts did you use after painting that trailer 3 times??

That's awesome! I'm getting ready 2 redo mine & I know rust oleum is a great product! So I was wondering if U could do what U did! It looks fantastic! I had already decided I was going 2 do the inside with the white N E way! Because I know it will protect & prevent N E further rust from occurring! My Dad's a tool & die maker & I grew up right by his side as a Tom boy & Daddy girl & we used that 4 all kinds of projects! Thanks so much 4 Ur AWESOME advice & video! U really did a fabulous job! Did U primer it with paint brush as well? Because like U I'm a single mom & on a tight budget lol! Thanks again! Have a blessed day!

      Hi Tracy Walker
I bought the least expensive rattle can primer I could. When I would go to Wal Mart to buy groceries, I would buy a couple of cans of primer. Once I had about 10 cans of primer, then I primed the trailer, sanded, and then primed again.
It took a little bit longer to do it that way, but it didn't cost a lot of money :)
I too started with the inside of the trailer to see how it would work, and I was so happy with the results, that's why I decided to do the outside of the trailer too.
I turned out pretty good I think :) And it looks so much better than it did before!
      Good luck on your project!!

  • @josephalcindor6323

If you used a foam roller it would have taken you no time to do and would have a much better finish than a paint brush.

      Hi Chelsey 😊
I should, it would be really funny! I say that because my horse trailer is basically a storage locker for my jumps and equipment. I am so afraid to drive with the trailer, I need to learn how to do it. When we bought the trailer and brought it home, I drove it for about 3 miles, and I was a nervous wreck. I am going to figure out how to do it though, because I really want to go to a "real" horse show with Ethan!

The Budget Equestrian looks respectable good work. it needs some cosmetic looking stripes on it wouldn't that be cool and white is good because it reflects the Sun and helps to keep the inside of the trailer cooler for the horses.

The Budget Equestrian I once painted an old four wheel drive pickup truck with white Rust-Oleum what I was going for its does it look respectable from the neighbor's front porch 50 feet across the street. LOL we don't have the right to park an eye sore in view of our neighbor's front porch. Since then that neighbor has became my best friend he has copies of the keys to my four wheel drive truck.

I know she bought 10 cans of the cheapest primer. And a gallon of the glossy white rustoleum paint would have been about $10 less than the 3 (I think) quarts she bought and used. The primer was sand able and so it was primed 2x with those 10 cans. I hope that helps. Oh and the high end / nice paint brush but many comments suggest a roller next time.
