+arth457 his motivation was to become someone great and to leave poverty, even before he met daisy. he could have achieved everything even without his love for her, yet he stated that everything he has is shallow and meaningless without her.
Radical Patriotic Conservative. No that is incorrect. When Nick talks with Gatsby's father at the end of the book he tells Nick that Gatsby never really belonged in the family and that he always had big dreams for himself. This was way way before Daisy
"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
The story about Gatsby is super sad to me. I watched the movie a few years ago and boy did I cry puddles. The way he loved Daisy, the way he loved what life with Daisy would look like was so dangerously beautiful to me. He didn't deserve to die the way he did but it just proves that you can't live for someone else. He lived for her. Just to get to her. Then died and she didn't even bother to show up to his funeral. Literally!! If you look up hauntingly beautiful songs and this song doesn’t pop up I wouldn’t agree with that list 😂😂 It really does embody “hauntingly beautiful” so well
This song is like the definition of Elegant….It’s beautiful, it gives me this feeling of being rich, wearing beautiful, elegant, floor length dresses and living in a different era like the 30’s. Which works because it’s in a movie set in the 20’s! But it’s just so…Lovely
The reason The Great Gatsby is a classic is because it is a tragedy. Nick was the only person who saw that Gatsby was a great man, but sadly with a singular blinding devotion to a fault for his true love. Lana's haunting style is a perfect fit to this timeless literary masterpiece.
tbh i think nick had a slight affection for him in a romantic light. maybe fell in love with the image in a materialistic curious way, and then never realised he had went the full way to unveil gatsby’s true self and knew him in his most raw and vulnerable state, thus being so passionate about remembering him and sleeping depressingly on the stairs , defending gatsby’s name and corpse so passionately.. shame we’ll never find out, old sport.
There is something about this song that reflects the morals and themes of The Great Gatsby in its novel form. It is beautiful just like the book and yet again, Lana is just effortless.
Jill Angel Totally! :) Lana's voice fits the bill and reminds me of the roaring twenties and has that really 1920's twinge to it. The Great Gatsby as a book was beautifully written and this song just does it justice.
Agreed. And it can be seen as either Daisy or Gatsby's point of view, or really the POV of that entire generation. Lana said it was in Daisy's view, but I love how it can be taken both ways. So, so perfect for this film and the novel.
Every time I listen to this song, I tear up. It reminds me of this one woman. This woman's life was terrible. She died at only 36. Some think she was murdered, some think suicide. No one really knows. She was a beautiful smart woman. She was born on June 1. 2 weeks later she was taken to an orphanage because her mother was mentally ill. She would be in 9 different foster homes from then till she was 16. She was raped twice during this episode of her life, both times by a different foster parent. Once at the age of 9, and another at age 11. At the age of 16, her new foster parents, whom she liked, couldnt have her live with her anymore, so it was either the orphanage or marriage to a boy she had been dating for a couple months. She chose marriage. During her marriage to her husband, named James, she wanted nothing more then a family, and to began her always wanted career as a model and actress. Her husband didn't support either of these. They ended up divorced. She was once again all alone. She had no money. Her car was towed, power turned off, and she was in desperate need of money. That was when she decided to get a quick "buck" by posing nude in a photo shoot, called the Red Velvet shoot. These would later become the first cover of Playboy magazine. She began modeling. She had her brown hair lightened to a gold color. She modeled for a while until she was offered a career in the movie business. She changed her name and had her hair cut short and died platinum. Her career was all she had until she married Joe DiMaggio. however he would beat her and call her a whore. They divorced only 9 months after there marriage. She then would marry a third time to Arthur Miller, in this stage she became pregnant 3 times, but sadly resulted in 3 miscarriages. She was diagnosed with endometriosis and could not have children. He blamed them on her causing her to go into depression. She had tried to commit suicide multiple times already. They divorced. On August 5, 1962 dead laying flat down on her bed at 2 am. It was done by an overdose. She was carried away. The real question is that would people "love her when she is no longer young and beautiful?" In God's eye she will forever be young and beautiful. This woman's name is Marilyn Monroe. R.I.P. June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962 Age: 36
Well, it won two other oscars so it is probably not "crappy" like you said then. But every one has their own taste in movies. Personally I thought it was amazing
FUN FACT: While the movie received polarizing critical reviews, F. Scott Fitzgerald's granddaughter saw the movie and had positive things to say about it, even going as far to say that "Scott would've been proud".
I think the rap fit perfectly. While not from that era, rap nowadays provokes similar reactions to jazz in the past and therefore, at least in my opinion, fits the tone.
@@dunbass7149 actually, they’ve got a point. Jazz, back then, was viewed very differently from what it is today. It was called “the devil’s music,” there were campaigns to censor it, it encouraged dancing, dancing that was considered promiscuous, and it was a style of music pioneered and performed by black people, something that was not socially acceptable back then due to rampant racism in society then. If the Great Gatsby had exclusively played Jazz music present in the 20s, it would not carry over the same cultural connotations as it does today. Rap music today often deals with topics such as promiscuity and often uses foul language, and is often a genre used to dance, often promiscuously, thus eliciting the same reaction from us today, as would the people of 1920s New York.

It was supposed to be, someone send a fake letter to the Academy voters saying that the song wasn't eligible for some reasons... That was a low blow. She deserved at least a nomination.
I happen to hear this song on Pandora first before watching The Great Gatsby, when I finally watched the movie last night & it started playing it... I couldn't stop the tear rolling down my cheek. He did, and would have done anything to have her. Everything he had meant nothing because she was his everything.

not many people I know appreciated The Great Gatsby the way I did, what really moved me about the movie was the sheer hope that J Gatsby had, the love he had for the world, and the way he tried to make the best of his life. The one thing he needed to finally make him truly happy, was love, which he got for a short amount of time, before he met a truly sad and unexpected, unnecessarily, tragic end. The reason he died; he protected the one he loved.
the story is of course amazing because it had a great source material to go on, but the movie made way too many mistakes, being cgi heavy cuz it was released in 3d. it felt really stretched out
Fitzgerald wrote this book hoping to shed some light on how The American Dream is just a dream, not reality. Not to mention how hollow the upper class is.
+Garett Walls I wasn't expecting to like this movie (I saw some of Romeo + Juliet and wanted to jump out a window.) but I watched it and it took me a few days to watch it all, but once I did it really had an impact on me and left me thinking about it a lot. I find the story to be one of the saddest I've ever known.
+Cait Crocker that's interesting. the fact that daisy didn't even go to his funeral was something that really stuck with me. and how everyone was quick to despise Gatsby.
We studied the original book in our second year in college there is so much details in the original book such a wonderful story written by F.Scot.Fitzgerald
This woman is brilliant, as a male I have more respect for this woman than any other mainstream female artist, she's unique and has an ability to tap into my emotions which is something that is actually very difficult for me to do normally.
This song is like a dangerous and forbidden dance between sadness and anger that never ends in the imagination of those who listens to it that in the end left you with a sense of sad peace…
Are you a writer or a poet? Asking genuinely cause the way you worded this is honestly so beautiful and captivating and inspiring, you could write a book and I have a feeling readers would hang on your every word X) just a thought though
@ thanks for your kind and thoughtful comment. I’m not neither a writer or a poet, I’m just a guy that lives in constant words, feelings and thoughts that come and goes like the waves of the ocean, in a place where time and space seems frozen, a place in the conscious mind of the reader where feelings flow and stop at every comma and dot. Not more, not less than that. Thank you for reading and have an excellent day!
I see so many people say that Daisy never loved Gatsby, but I have to disagree. I think she loved him, but it was a selfish love. Real love is a give and take, but she just 'took' and it was entirely selfish. I think she loved him, but she wasn't IN love with him.
Exactly. I think she was more in love with the idea of him. Having this great love with glamour and excitement. But in the end, she wasn't ready to commit or was afraid to leave the comfort of what she already had.
i think that too, but i also think gatsby was in love with the idea of daisy, in the book it's mentioned he has these thoughts of being with her and unrealistic expectations for daisy, and as mentioned she wasn't ready to leave the security she had with tom
I feel the same way! I have the DVD and have seen the movie more than enough times. She loved him but I think she was more concerned with 'Having' him. She used him as an escape from Tom and the real world when she needed to. There was the attraction and desire when they first saw each other after a long time. I just think Gatsby was gone way to long and Daisy grew accustomed to Tom's money and foolery.
It's the fear that leads to many tragedies. The fear that, no matter how much you have in life, and no matter how much they make you happy, even if you KNOW some of it will still be there as you grow older, you can't help but feel like it could all just up and disappear from your life at any moment. It's the kind of fear that makes you desperate to hold onto what you can while it's still there. While you're still young.
I never got to tell her. Now I'm suffering, I feel like soon their will never be enough time for me to get huh chance, I'm dying out so young age, I must think now but. . I can't I'm the only .. I should foreget about it, this song is scary to think about. I never told how I felt.
This song's beauty and what it did for the Daisy & Gatsby love/reconnecting scene almost makes up for the anachronistic train wrecks that were the rap songs Jay-Z shat across the movie. They completely jarred me out of the Roaring '20s in the worst way possible.
The reason they put hip hop into the movie is because they wanted people to know the feeling that those in the twenties felt when they heard Jazz. At the time Jazz was looked upon the same way hip hop is looked upon today so, they wanted to represent this feeling.
***** If the new generation cannot connect with Jazz, then we may as well call them the soulless generation. Jazz is soul. The 20s were full of soul. To convince the masses about the feeling of the twenties would be to remind them of the roots of all music that has heart, not replace it with songs that one day 100 years from now, future generations will question how we allowed our roots to fall away. That's what the rap music does to any movie like this. Those who hated the scenes with a rap layover are the ones who still have soul and still have heart. Those who thought they were perfect with that atrocious music are severely out of touch.
This song is powerful, so much emotion... you can feel it in your chest. I'm glad I get to live in the era of Leo's performing career. Everything he is in is top notch acting material. The Great Gatsby is my favorite movie in at least the last 10 years. It has this pristine clarity to it with the visuals and I love the characters throughout the movie. Everything, the actors/actresses, the story, the music... all perfectly put together.
I was on a school exchange and we went to France. There was the cutest girl i've ever seen, she was so nice and pretty. I really liked her and every minute with her was so beautiful. But after a week i had to move back to Germany. Then after 2 months she came to Germany and i was so happy to see her again. I really fell in love with her and i think she also liked me so it was my mission to win her heart. I was on a good way but then i realized that this exchange is just a week and maybe i will never see her again after this week. This was one of her favourite songs and now, when she's back at home, 1000km away from me, this song is one of the emotional memories to her. Every time i hear this song i think of her and i nearly cry. Please come back to Germany!
This song summarizes how Gatsby didn't really love Daisy. The book/movie is suppose to be about the American Dream. When you read/watch it, it's easy to buy into the idea that Gatsby is that dream's physical representation: he's rich, he's beloved, he has the cars, the clothes, and the giant mansion -- more wealth than anyone could ever want or know how to spend, -- but he isn't the American Dream. Daisy is, because Gatsby simply isn't happy with what he has -- HE NEEDS MORE. HE NEEDS HER. People who believe in that Dream only see this ideal, to the point that nothing and no one else matters. They will do and sacrifice anything to get what they want, just like Gatsby. Everything he had was meaningless to him: all those people at his parties were pawns, even Nick; none of them really mattered to Gatsby. Only Daisy mattered. So if you look close enough, you'll see that Gatsby didn't really love Daisy because he loved the IDEA of her, he loved what she represented, for the same reason that people love the idea of the American Dream. They don't really want the house, the dog, the white picket fence: they want the perfect life and the perfect partner to live it with, when no such thing and no such person exists. That's why Daisy was deliberately written to seem so perfect herself: she's young, she's lively, she's wealthy and powerful - along with all the happiness that promises to bring. That's why this song is even sadder than it lets on: "will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" We don't know. It implies that even if they were together, Daisy and Gatsby wouldn't have been happy. Why? Because it's a lie. Because he doesn't love her. Because the American Dream is just that...it's a DREAM. The Great Gatsby (the person) wasn't that great. He was incredibly flawed, delusional, and callous, to the point that he was willing to ruin a family. I will always love him as a character, but just as Gatsby didn't deserve to die, no one deserves to be with someone who doesn't love them for who they really are. We are people, not someone else's fantasy.
The whole movie was about idealism which is why the film looked so dreamy and outwordly and lavish. The characters were projecting that ideal to cope with their inner pain.
This song is like heaven sent a musical note down to earth and dissolved into this song. It has so much soul, so much compassion, so much depth. It's both both sad and happy at the same time. It's sung with so much heart it sends chills throughout your body and engulfs your heart in its beauty. A moving song fit with a moving movie, both quite underrated (the movie more so). The love in her voice is real, the angelic-ness and classic soul radiating from the background Instrumental all bring this masterpiece together. Into one, unforgettable, ballad of love. It may grow old but will forever remain Young and Beautiful.

Jill Angel Totally! :) Lana's voice fits the bill and reminds me of the roaring twenties and has that really 1920's twinge to it. The Great Gatsby as a book was beautifully written and this song just does it justice.
Billy Darbon Justice in the sense that it is just as beautiful as the novel.
Right
Agreed. And it can be seen as either Daisy or Gatsby's point of view, or really the POV of that entire generation. Lana said it was in Daisy's view, but I love how it can be taken both ways. So, so perfect for this film and the novel.
No one can cover this song.... Lana Del Rey's voice and singing style was meant for this
This was perfect at the prom..
Her voice is otherworldly...ethereal.
This song sounds like heaven. It makes me feel like I’m in Italy during the summer, just enjoying life without a stress about anything

I think the rap fit perfectly. While not from that era, rap nowadays provokes similar reactions to jazz in the past and therefore, at least in my opinion, fits the tone.
@@cedricheitmann1786 you know what would’ve provoked similar reactions Jazz
@@dunbass7149 I’ll take jazz and the Mississippi delta blues all week over rap.

When you and I were forever wild

Will you still love me
When I got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will

not many people I know appreciated The Great Gatsby the way I did, what really moved me about the movie was the sheer hope that J Gatsby had, the love he had for the world, and the way he tried to make the best of his life. The one thing he needed to finally make him truly happy, was love, which he got for a short amount of time, before he met a truly sad and unexpected, unnecessarily, tragic end. The reason he died; he protected the one he loved.
+Garett Walls i haven't seen the new movie but i read the book a long time ago and watched the older movie would you recommend the new movie?
the story is of course amazing because it had a great source material to go on, but the movie made way too many mistakes, being cgi heavy cuz it was released in 3d. it felt really stretched out
Fitzgerald wrote this book hoping to shed some light on how The American Dream is just a dream, not reality.

Nabiha Asalamualaikum
I see so many people say that Daisy never loved Gatsby, but I have to disagree. I think she loved him, but it was a selfish love. Real love is a give and take, but she just 'took' and it was entirely selfish. I think she loved him, but she wasn't IN love with him.
Nina Laffoon deep af
Preach

+Anthony Gunawan its such a great movie. i love it so much
the movie is so great.
I just watched it today and I thought I was a movie buff.
This song's beauty and what it did for the Daisy & Gatsby love/reconnecting scene almost makes up for the anachronistic train wrecks that were the rap songs Jay-Z shat across the movie. They completely jarred me out of the Roaring '20s in the worst way possible.
I loved everything you hated :)
Good. Balanced has been restored to the Gatsbian Universe. :)
The reason they put hip hop into the movie is because they wanted people to know the feeling that those in the twenties felt when they heard Jazz. At the time Jazz was looked upon the same way hip hop is looked upon today so, they wanted to represent this feeling.
***** this is true!
I can't believe lana del rey makes me feel nostalgia for things I've never lived
this movie is masterpiece it's a strange it wasn't even nominated for Oscar.
Me and my husband danced to this song at our wedding. He surprised me with this and I've never cried harder in my life.
Everything, the actors/actresses, the story, the music... all perfectly put together.

this is one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard.
I still can’t get over this song😔🤚
My American dream is my crush..
Wow!! Thar was deep and totally makes sense!!
Agreed. Couldn't have said it better myself.
The whole movie was about idealism which is why the film looked so dreamy and outwordly and lavish. The characters were projecting that ideal to cope with their inner pain.
