  • Hello Friends! I was recently on a little jaunt to Seattle and I wanted to take some sewing with me for when i had time in the hotel. I decided to take my stack of 18th Century Skirts / petticoats with me to work on and then it occurred to me that there may be some of you out there that do not know how to make these yet! They are easy, fun, don't require a pattern, and are very portable sewing projects. So here you go! Here's how I make them! I hope that you enjoy!

    Just starting to get back into sewing again, after a pandemic-induced slump. Several members of the GBACG are going to walk in the Rose, White, & Blue Parade in San Jose on the 4th of July (in costume, of course), so I am working on a 19-teens linen walking skirt for that. I have also been researching Italian folk dress for a few years, and was able to purchase a 19th century Roman folk costume last year, which I would like to copy. Still looking for the right fabrics and trims for that, because Italian folk dress is really rare to find (Mussolini's government encouraged people to throw away their "old things" and that attitude is still prevalent through most of the country, so people aren't making accurately-styled new folk costumes), and the styles changed based on the town that a person was from. The dream is to make a traditional costume from one of the towns that my great-grandparents were born in, and wear it to the Festa Italiana one year.

    I love the blind sewing foot stitch! I really don't sew at all (incase it isn't obvious), but there is something super satisfying about the even by hand invisible look on the outside but the secret mountains on the inside that just makes me super happy.
    I have a skirt that needs it's hem redone since the original hem fell out after 2 washes, and just seeing your videos let's me chill and benefit by learning things via osmosis. I love it!

    These are my favorite skirts to make and wear and the moment. I made two wool ones last winter and just finished a black lightweight linen one for summer. They are all basically for History bounding/everyday wear. This being the case, I figured out how to put pockets in them. (I didn't feel like making separate pocket bags).

    • @devh6168
      @devh6168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      literally just commented that I want to make skirts like this for every day with pockets - how did you do it if you don't mind me asking?

    • @studious_nonchalance
      @studious_nonchalance 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@devh6168 I cut out two large squares of thinner scrap material, larger than my hands. I did a narrow hem all around each one, except one side which was a nice selvedge. Placing the selvedge edge on top, I hand stitched the squares inside the skirt straddling the pocket slits so that the top edge is anchored on either side of the slits on the waist tape about 2 inches back. I fooled around pinning it til I was happy with how it was placed before sewing. All three sides other than the top edge. I also stitched up the slits a bit more so that it would hold more. When you put the skirt on, you kinda have to tuck the top of the pocket back into the waist but if the fabric is thin enough, it doesn't create bulk. The effect is like a pocket bag but it's part of your skirt. I hope that made sense but if not, I would be happy to pop up a little tutorial on my Instagram.

    Those are nice skirts. I like the way they close. As someone who has just spent weeks altering clothes I wish modern clothing was as simple.
    Most of what else I have been doing is weeding. Endlessly weeding. Last summer was hot and smoky into the fall so even the fall work didn't get done. So the weeds took over. We have this nasty invasive weed that you can't get rid off. So garden fabric and lots of mulch and constant vigilance.
    I am not reading anything new. Just sort of watching old TH-cam videos while I knit and glare at the pile of clothing to alter. Some got donated.

    I am watching so many shows, like stranger things and umbrella academy. I hand sewed my own version of Bernadette's pirate shirt because I wanted a yoke and it turned out amazing! I think I'm going to keep doing hand sewing projects while I work on my house because I miss sewing and don't want to wait til I have my machine. I think a cloak is next, it's a commission a friend has been patiently waiting on.

    I've seen these done before, but you did a nice job of explaining them! I like the loop and button idea; it's a much less destructive option than pinning a skirt up, and it should hold better than tucking it into a waistband. I think trained wedding dresses have something similar so they can be bustled.

    PERFECT TIMING! I have some very old house skirts that were purchased and it is 100% time to say goodbye to them. a shortened version of these (with perhaps pockets if I can figure out how) would be the bomb. Biggest news for me is that I finally bit the bullet and got a new machine after fighting with my current one and I am SO IN LOVE. I never knew sewing could be so easy! I breezed through a tunic length wearable mock up for a dress (Tessuti fabrics Bondi Dress). Cut the turquoise blue linen out yesterday and and I hope to have it done by the end of the long weekend. Currently listening to the Discworld serious b/c somehow I never read it? Then I have to trial run a tunic pattern that my mom and I are going to do a long distance sew along together :)

    Oh and if you want to know what us other people are doing, well, I have decided I absolutely love wearing linen/ramie chemises 18thC - the ones with the long sleeves, nice and roomy - and so I have made two long ones and one shorter one. One, I used the machine and stitched the hem, as you say, straight across, no blind hem (never tried that - if I want it to be invisible, I hand sew it so I'll definitely be trying that blind hemming particularly since I have the right foot - thanks for the explanation). And I wanted to make an 1890's skirt, so I tried my hand at corset making and six or seven failed corsets later, decided that the mock up of the skirt uses way too much fabric (I used an old duvet cover which will be used as a petticoat when I alter it) and so after having reduced the bulk at the back, it occurred to me that I could just do the skirt like the petticoats in this video but make it flatter at the front (less pleats, so a more shaped front piece rather than a rectangle) and then have pleats at the back. The advantage of that model would be the openings at the side for the pocket I enjoyed making and might even embroider at some point. Having said that, I have perhaps worn a skirt about six or seven times in my whole life, but now I think it'd be nice and warm with woolly leg coverings, several petticoats, and the cloak I am in the process of making (from an 1885 pattern of a Grande Rotonde). So, I think it safe to say that I am floating through the centuries willy-nilly and enjoying it very much. And now I think I'll just go visit my cliff dwelling on ARK and see if I can manage not to get eaten by the carnotaurus I might try to tame. He's been hanging around my beach house so it's a case of be eaten or tame him or hide from him or kill him.

    They look great together and I love the buttons and loops idea.
    I’m not doing much of anything right now. Just trying to catch up on all the things. It’s been a couple of weeks of going to do something and either getting interrupted or discovering that you have to do 6 things first before doing the thing. It’s frustrating and makes me feel behind even though there’s no deadline for any of it. We believe that we have found all the tiny holes in the fence the dog can get out through. The last one was found after he went on a walk about on the hottest day this year. I was two blocks away when my husband phoned to say he was in the yard looking pleased with himself! But that was hours of unplanned time ending with more chicken wire attached to the fence! Little dogs are complicated!! I really need to get some wins in soon! Unfortunately almost everything on the list is complicated and includes things like packing up a room for a complete make over while doing regularly scheduled life stuff!

Most of my free time over the past 6 weeks has been spent with my cats, especially the now 12-week-old Albus Dumbledore. The next youngest is nearly 10 years older, so tom Hershey and kitties Scarlett O'Hara and Maggie Minerva McGonagal--yes, I'm an HP & FB fan--are still adjusting to the very energetic kitten. You are delightful and comforting, just like a good sewing buddy should be. My mother taught me to sew by machine years ago and it only occurred to me recently, that I should try hand sewing. I mean, I like handwork, why wouldn't I like hand sewing?
    I finished a couple pairs of bloomers on a long car trip while my husband drove instead of my normal crochet project and it was super fun, minus the bumps and occasional yelps from stabby needles! 😂 Thank you for the gentle reminder about judgement and hemming. I really do appreciate it.
    I am currently reading a book about how we are all cousins and the universal family reunion, that man makes genealogy enjoyable, truly. A.J. Jacobs, It's All Relative is the title. Bought it for my brother who is the family genealogist, started to read a bit just to make sure it was good and got sucked in! 😆 I would definitely recommend it.
    As far as projects go, gardening is just taking over everything currently, figuratively and literally. I am also working on a shawl for donation to our local art collective, they need a new roof. Carving clay tiles with art nouveau and art deco motifs along with Pacific NW botanicals etc for making plates, which is super cool and has put my bloomer making addiction on the back burner...
    Good times. Thanks for asking and being genuinely interested. I appreciate you and am glad to hear about what you have been up to. Thanks for the recommendations and advice Lovely! ❤️

    Another great video. Really like your hack for lifting the skirts. May have to incorporate into some of my dance skirts. Recently performed with my RSCDS group at the Highland Games and constantly found myself using any excuse to ruffle my skirt just for air movement. It was great fun but very hot. Sewing-wise I have been altering my recently acquired summer weight wool tartan skirts. Usually just need to take out a pleat or two and insert a new waistband. Really loving the flexibility pleating allows for as I am trying to get into more athletic shape - really wanting to go backpacking this fall and need to be in better shape. That said I’ve managed to get a sinus infection and the meds mess me up a bit so the only thing I’ve been watching is The Sword and the Brocade and reading the subtitles (it’s a Chinese period drama). It really has me wanting to take up my embroidery again!

    This was cool to see; I semi-recently made myself some modern skirts based on essentially petticoat design, and just wear leggings with side pockets which I can access in the side slit. haha. Worked surprisingly well and best yet I can layer several for winter chill without issue.
    I'm just starting some new projects: I recently got a powerchair and on my first outing my shins immediately protested the cold. So I'm hoping to make a few full length skirts to mix and match as outer and under layers to help with that while still being comfy and cute. I don't like pants when sitting for a long time, so blanket skirt to the rescue.

    As far as the polonaising or any other 'adjustments' or 'liberties' you take with making any historical costumes, I would guess that if you thought to do whatever it is you do, then there is a good chance that some woman back then also thought it'd be a good idea. I really do not believe that everyone obediently, docilely, wore the same as everyone else. Look around and look at how people modify their clothes, even the dedicated followers of fashion. People are people. I like your videos because I think they are true to being human when it comes to clothes and reminds us that we as a species have always had individuals in our midst who did things differently. It's great. Thanks for the video.

    The seamstress who did the alterations for my wedding gown created a bustle for the train by using ribbons like that. I should look to see exactly how but I know it involved corresponding loops and threads of matching ribbon so you just match the colors and it bustled. I think my wedding dress might still be bustled... and its been almost 5 years. LoL
