    This is a great series for new players. I've been playing for a few months and watched a few Let's Plays, but I"m still learning. For example, I completely overlooked the action menu.

      Yeah, I've played a pretty good amount and i am still finding new things to learn fairly regularly. The depth of the systems and sheer amount of content is amazing.

      Heh, that series was the first thing i uploaded to TH-cam. I still cringe when i go back and look/listen to those early video's. General audio/video quality has gone up tremendously since those days. I'm glad your finding the series helpful.

    I don't remember in which video you created a knife spear, but in the newer updates it either requires a broom or a long stick, which you can get only if you chop down a tree. Do you have any tips for how to fight 1-1 with a zombie, with no reach attacks? Most of my throwing stick throws miss, and in the new updates, you have to wield what you throw... please help.

    • @Vormithrax
      @Vormithrax  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Knife-Spear will use a two-by-four or a long stick (which you can easily get by smashing a young tree). It's still very easy to make. They did nerf the knife-spear to be fragile now but at the same time they lowered the incidence of bite wounds (now zombies must grab you successfully to inflict a bite, so always move away to break grabs when they happen). This made the reach attack not as critical as it had been in the past and made using other melee weapons a viable choice. I don't personally use throwing sticks as I consider them overpowered but haven't re-evaluated since the changes to throwing (requiring the item to be equipped first). I don't have any special tips to offer beyond the obvious- avoid every fight you can, use local terrain/objects to your advantage, force the enemy to stand on rough terrain (bushes, car frame, table, window ledge, etc), hit and back up against slower zombies, keep your encumbrance low, keep your stamina high, etc.

      Vormithrax how can I identify a young tree? If I inspect a tree, it will say if it is a young one, right?

    • @Vormithrax
      @Vormithrax  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Uh...there are bushes (which you search for vegetables and other stuff), young trees, and grown trees. they all have completely different graphics, you should not need to examine anything. What they look like depends on the graphic tileset your using so it's hard for me to describe. In the linked picture i am standing directly above a young tree, a full tree is to the right, and a bush is above me. prntscr.com/kxwzup

      Cudgels are also very good, but don't have reach attacks.

    Spend at least 50% of your time for the first 50 hours learning or trying to remember keys, there must be a better way.. I love roguelikes, but this is why I find it hard to stomach Dwarf Fortress / Cataclysm.

    • @Vormithrax
      @Vormithrax  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's the price that has to be paid for the complexity of the game/system. If you want big/deep/complex systems that you can really dig into and enjoy for a long time you have to be willing to put in the time to learn. The main suggestion i give new players is to use the Action Menu. It is a nested menu that is very fast to use and shows all the actions and hotkeys available to the player based on their situation/items. It both shows what options are available and also lists the hotkey that is used for that action.

    • @Camcolito
      @Camcolito 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Don't get me wrong - the game mechanics are very good, and your videos are great. I just think the interface sucks. You can have a complex game without a bad UI, and you can have a simple game that is a pain to play because of a bad UI. Obviously a polished and user friendly interface is not a high priority and that's fine for some, but I like to be able to play a game without worrying about developing carpal tunnel. Maybe I've just been spoiled with mouse interfaces over the years.

    • @Vormithrax
      @Vormithrax  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah, a more polished UI would be great, but our hopes and expectations have to be tempered with the fact that this is a completely free game updated/developed by a committee of volunteers. I can't even imagine the mess of Frankenstein spaghetti coding that is propping up the systems at this point given the 'everything and the kitchen sink' style of adding content/systems.

    • @Camcolito
      @Camcolito 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's true, however a lot of hours have gone into the game development, volunteer or not. I'd just like to see some shifted to make the game easier to play. Note this does not mean making it less complex. A lot of roguelikes are all or mostly volunteer efforts - Crawl, TOME, etc. Their interface is great. Even Rogue Survivor is more user friendly. None of these are as involved mechanically as CDDA, but I don't see a reason why a mouse driven overlay couldn't be created, ala Neo Scavenger. That would be awesome.
      This is all just personal preference though, and for all I know the coding required could be unfeasible. I like CCDA but need to take breaks often because my hands hurt ('hitting these keys repeatedly makes your wrist ache!').

    • @WunnSEN
      @WunnSEN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 years late so your probably a master of the keys by now but ive just picked up the game around 24hrs ago and the keys are the most annoying thing i have to say about the game... BUT i have found it ALOT easier to have a visual reference of the keys, there is a Reddit post called "CDDA Controls Cheat Sheet" that has helped me lots!

      Hmm...that video is from 2.5 years ago. Been quite a few interface changes since then. You might want to check out my Awesome Fonts video. Just note that you now change font sizes and blending from the in game options menu instead of by editing the .json like in the video but all the other info is still relevant. the interface can also now be adjusted (if you're playing 0.E or a recent experimental build) with the { key. th-cam.com/video/iAUlHr6LM2k/w-d-xo.html
