  • After changing the word on an ornament, Hallmark fell under some scrutiny. Ellen had a great way for them to get back on track.

    Well done Ellen.
    That would be so cool if that ornament got marketed and started selling in stores.

    Things need to be equal, fair and loving. "Don we now our GAY apparel" shouldn't even be an issue. Change it back!

  • @alexscott3208
    @alexscott3208 10 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    I don't think they changed it because they think 'gay' has a negative connotation, I think they changed it because the more Common definition of gay is not the one they are trying to express. Gay now is very rarely expresses being happy.

      Yeah, i definately agree. I still don't get why they had to use that line for the ournament. There are so many great lines in so many different christmas songs, and they had to use that just so they could change it. But, yeah i still get it.
      You still can't argue the fact that no matter what the case is, her response was hilarious! :D

      omg i know right! how freakin dumb is that like would it have been so hard to find another line than that one where they would have to change the words? there are millions of christmas songs :D oh my god stupid people

    I understand no longer using the word gay to mean happy/joyous, what I don't understand or agree with is the need to tamper with classic lyrics/literature. You just shouldn't

    • @DarkFrogr
      @DarkFrogr 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would hardly call a Christmas song a classic song.

    • @TheSimplyDivineBlack
      @TheSimplyDivineBlack 10 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      DarkFrogr I suppose traditional would be a better word but it is still a classic song, dating back to the sixteenth century. All traditional Christmas songs are considered classic or classical as most date back far and are considered part of the culture.

      Nobody says "Don we now our" anything, but those are the lyrics. Interesting how in updating the words on this ornament they didn't change any of the other language we no longer use. 🤔

      Why? I mean it is abit strange, but i don't think it is homopobic. It was probably to avoid any questions, and to gain negative attention. If i owned a brand i would simply not be interested in supporting nor be against gay rights publicly, if could interfere with profit. That is common practice in the business world, and why sponsors usually drops anyone who suddenly says something controversial or politically charged.

    If they just changed it because "gay" is no longer commonly used for "fun", No one uses the word "don" anymore either. Or apparel, really. I mean if they are trying to update the song, they probably should have just changed it to "Rockin our fun swag"

    Good for you Ellen. People nowadays are dumb. Who cares if it says GAY? There are many definitions for words and they are taking this word way out of context. In the song gays meaning is happy, it has NOTHING at all to do with being "GAY"!!!!!!!!! Stop sheltering your kids from the truth, be freaking honest with them. Ther is absolutely nothing wrong with sharing you love with who you choose. This is one of many reasons kids are being bullied in school it all comes down to how that child is being raised and they think its ok and cool to bully someone that it probably already confused about what society thinks. For Goodness Sake, LIVE AND LET LIVE!!!!!!!! Be who and what you want to be because in reality it is your life and NOBODY has the right to tell how yo need to live it. Be happy and comfortable in you skin. You have ONE chance to live so live it to th fullest. I commend everyone who ignores what society says is the correct way to live, DAM IT DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!!!!

    I think it's stupid that they changed it. There is literally NO reason to change it because everyone knows what the song is saying. That's how the song goes and so the ornament makes no sense because it's no longer quoting the song. They're shooting themselves in the foot because, homophobic or not, the song is no longer what you know it to be. It sounds awkward and so very few people will buy it.

    In the song 'The Sun Has Got It''s Hat On', there's the line that says everyones bright and gay, or something like that. It annoys me that do-gooding busy bodys change things for no reason. To me, it just goes to show a level of ignorance that they even think it needs changing. The word gay has gone through many meanings from a woman being on the game, to meaning happy and then homosexual. Now kids in Britain at least, use the word gay to mean somethings rubbish i.e 'that's gay!' I think this is mainly just somebody, changing something that didn't need changing, because they have to look to be doing something to justify there job!

    Hallmark couldn't think of a single DIFFERENT ornament to make?? If they thought "gay" apparel would be insensitive, you mean to tell me they weren't smart enough to realize replacing "gay" with "fun" would be even MORE insensitive?! No one had enough sense to say, "Hey, maybe we should just skip this ornament all together.". Idiots!

  • @HipsterBlood

    Anyone who isn't a high school dropout knows both definitions of the word 'gay'. Give me a break. I don't doubt for a second that they dropped 'gay' from the ornament for fear that the public wouldn't buy it if the word was left on it. Who wants to buy 'gay' clothes? Eww. We've been singing this song for centuries.

    What next? Is Hanna-Barbera gonna change the last line of the Flintstones theme because it has the word gay in it? That's of course assuming Flintstones is still airing, but still.
    Seriously though, most kids these days are smart enough to know the lyrics of Deck the Halls and would probably point out the mistake if they saw this ornament in stores. When I was a kid I didn't even pay attention to the meaning of the words. I just liked the song in and of itself, which I imagine most kids do anyway.

  • @witarzan
    @witarzan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, since the "meaning" of the word "gay" has changed and used in a different way.. it's probably good that they change because they don't want to let people, especially YOUNG children, to get the right meaning and not be confused or make fun of the song...They must have a reason why they changed it.

    • @witarzan
      @witarzan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am sorry?? Why are you making this such a big deal?? I DONT have any problems with the word "gay"...or what the young children may know...i'm just saying that they might have a reason why Hallmarks do that.... Every thing has a reason in it. That's it. Nothing else.

  • @Cattism7
    @Cattism7 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think if Hallmark wanted to convey a meaning of joy-ousness, changing the word to fun makes sence, because gay usually now refers to either homosexuality or rubbish-ness. I think it's similar to how "sick" and "bad" can now be used as slang words to mean good. Language evolves and the percieved meaning may no longer match the intended meaning, and to me, correcting the wording so the percived and intended meaing match make sence.

    • @DarkShadows713
      @DarkShadows713 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes sense to say "don we now our fun apparel?" That's a sentence you would say today? You use the words "don" and "apparel" in everyday modern speech?

  • @siBossx
    @siBossx 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok but Hallmark didn’t change it to be homophobic. They even came out and said they were trying to avoid offending anyone because ‘gay’ now has multiple meanings. Seems like they still got shit for it because everyone is so damn sensitive now. I'm gay as fuck and as long as you don't try and burn me at the stake or something then I really don't care what you say.

    • @islandwomanmj
      @islandwomanmj 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, but I don't know how you try to avoid offending anyone by changing a friggin' seasonal song lyric on an ornament. If there are 5th grade gigglers at the line now we don our gay apparel, who cares? NOW it's a deal.
