  • Opening the kiln can bring joy and excitement, or confusion, tears and disappointment. Oh, and also some curse words.
Well, neither of these projects worked as I hoped but the learning will continue! Here are the notes anyway… would love your feedback, ideas, guesses and general comments of consolation.
    Glass used:
Bullseye Steel Blue Opalescent (146); specific notes: www.bullseyegla... and www.bullseyegla...
    Bullseye glascadia 90422A powder blue/steel blue/white graffiti
    Bullseye clear Tekta
As an Amazon Affiliate I earn from qualifying purchases.
    Diamond hand pads: amzn.to/3HOvpzC
Full-fuse firing schedules were the same in both projects. Both fusings with the Glascadia glass also used this same schedule both times.
    300-1100-45
    100-1225-60
    600-1475-20
9999-900-90 (because of the Tekta nuggets adding thickness to the one piece)
    100-600-0

Hey---bad things happen in the kiln, but at least you are doing something with your kiln besides looking at TH-cam videos and wishing you had the time and energy and COURAGE to put glass in the kiln and turn it on! So many people are benefiting from what your are sharing--keep it up! And thanks for the honesty!

When I’ve fired 146 you get the silver if left uncapped. You may get no slivering then a slump fire will bring out the silverish matte finish. It shows up when it wants. Same with Steel Jade. A much overlooked bullseye opal glass. I have soaked in vinegar, forgetting piece in vinegar and the silver was all gone. This leaves me to believe it is extremely unsafe for food usage. No need to send. Clear cap. Good luck.

That is good information Debbie. Thanks for sharing that. If the coating is so touchy, that could explain why the label and the writing survived the firing. The glue and ink bonded into the coating. Regardless of how much you clean it, the problem is still there.

I love steel blue and have puzzled over its (I thought) unpredictability. Then I ran across an article last night describing the development of the glass. It said that if it’s fired over 1400 degrees you will not get the consistent silver reaction. I was so happy to get this information because I’m working on a piece that I had planned to full fuse, so I’ll be scrapping that idea! Great videos - keep them coming!

I like the end result on the "spotted" glass. But then I'm not sure what you were trying to achieve. Hopefully, the cutting and coldworking on the other pieces turned out well.

LOVED the look of the clear blobs on top! I have been messing with this glass for the last month. I have been able to get an almost MIRROR steel finish and it blew my mind on some slumped/draped votive candle I made. It does NOT like second firing. It's almost a one and done color change which angered me as well. Steel Jade is just like this as well. I needs MUCH lower heat and longer holds to get this. I will try my best in recording a video and tag you in it soon. I love watching your experiments so thank you for making these. 🥰

I am sorry you had a sequence of unfortunate firings. I have had a run of these and know the frustration. Thank you for your videos. This video showed us cleaning is very important, Blue steel can not be reworked, capping it is not successful with steel blue and placing parts farther apart. These are all very important lessons.

  • @laurierich4955
    @laurierich4955 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Steel blue returns to original blue color with additional heat. Remember that heatwork id cumulative, so a 45 minute bubble squeeze at 1225 or so will add heat, but not flow. Give it another firing, with long BS, to 1490 for 15 minutes and see what you get. Also, placement in your kiln could hane resulted ic some silvering due to cool/hot spots from the elements, so fire alone in center. Post results. Cant wait

Jamaison, don't be so hard on yourself! It IS a disappointment without a doubt. You can easily fix those other pieces, they may look a touch unique when you're done, but they can be fixed. I totally feel your frustration on all fronts, but don't scrap the stuff, you can fix or recreate something new. You are so creative, I think you just had a rough day and the kiln got the better of you, it happens. I once made a gorgeous 6 layer pendant with dichro and the works, took 4 fusings, and I rushed and ramped too fast on the last fusing and had pit marks on the edges! I was so mad at myself. I coldworked the hell out that thing, but in the end it was good, albeit a bit smaller, LOL! Hang in there, you offer such wonderful inspiration and creativity. Also, if you don't fail once in awhile, you're not stepping far enough outside the box and learning things! 👍💖😉

I loved your tutorial on that steel blue. I’m trying to figure it out myself. I can’t find out if I put it up to the 1500 that Bullseye has asked us to and turn it to blue which is what I want will it go back to steel or gray color once eyes slump it..

I know this post is a couple of years old, but... Watching one of the Bullseye tutorial videos (L130 considerations for multiple firings) they specifically talk about the silver sheen developing on the steel blue art glass. The problem is more likely at lower temperatures (such as slumping). The only solution they offer is to use a clear cap... Makes me wonder about a thin layer of powedered clear? 🙂

@@JamaisonSchuler You know, now that you mention it, I remember you mentioned that idea. So, if the problem occurs in the lower temps, then hotter? Of course, too hot and it might just as well be a full fuse and give up on the original plan. Thanks for reminding me that you tried that!😭

Great video, I appreciate you bringing us along on your learning journey! The Steel Blue seems like such a interesting and unique color profile, especially with the reactions. I was surprised about the sticker and marker residue. I felt your pain also with the refirings making things weirder. I agree the steel blue piece with the tekta blobs (one that comes out mostly free of flaws, anyway) would absolutely look great as a drop vase.

Your frustrations are totally understandable - we’ve all been there - but your self-critical videos are so helpful. Please continue making them.
Steel Blue is a really difficult glass to work with so your outcomes are not your fault. You asked for alternative ways of achieving your dotted platter but I don’t know of one where you’d still keep the steel colour. Your blue-on-blue piece after the 3rd firing was pretty cool and I wonder if you could have achieved that by using clear dots on Egyptian Blue.
