Give Troy some credit, he rightly recognized that most of us figured out how to go "brrrrr" not by getting lessons but more or less stumbling upon it by accident or being shown by other players at gigs or the like. There wasn't a widely available internet when some of this stuff was discovered. The pick-slanting thing is great because it more or less formalizes what a bunch of different guys from all over figured out themselves. Roy just figured it out smarter: Big pick with pointy tip - pick near the bridge - it makes the attack sound a lot different. Wiry.
@aliensporebomb Not accurate and very misleading. What Troy and ‘others’ have said about me to his fan base 2017-present is 100% false, inaccurate and entirely unforgivable. What he could/should have done is invite me to talk about my concepts instead of the latter and judging from old video. It was sold to me that the ‘Grady seal of approval’ was necessary. I certainly don’t need Troy’s or anyone else’s validation! I could go on about the conclusions I learned from over 40 years ago of extensive research touring the Middle East/Central Asia playing with traditional orchestras who play undiluted Sarod form but that again is for another video I am currently working on called ‘Hybrid Sarod’ because that is how I play. It is a Hybrid version of Sarod using my own pick design. Not reverse dart whatever.

Interesting! I started out holding the pick conventionally but switched to holding my pick at an angle 45 years ago because it felt far more natural. Hybrid Sarod is the alternate picking technique I cultivated over 45 years along with my PhatBhoyPick design to accompany my method. More on this on the new upcoming Second Look series.

From the video it looks like the angle you're holding your pick at is basically parallel to the strings. Is that correct, and do you think it makes much of a difference? I can't get my picking thumb to arch back that far
How does this video look like I am holding the pick parallel to the strings when clearly my hand is held in an up angle 45 degree position? Hold the pick whatever way comes most naturally and practice from there.

Maybe you think I'm crazy, but it looked like the way you hold the pick with your thumb has you bending your thumb back in such a way that it negated the angle of your wrist. Even on the video thumbnail it appears to me that way. The pick looked like it was hitting the strings at a straight angle on the close ups, too. I wasn't 100% sure of it, so I asked for a correction if needed, and you actually gave it, so fair enough. Thanks again!
That is correct. However it's the pick held at a 45deg angle to the string that counts. I designed a 'PhatBhoyPick' 40 years ago to keep the edge parallel to the strings while I play like this. I started production of the pick in 2017 for both Downangle/Upangle players.
