As a college student who wanted to learn this at home over spring break, I'm really grateful that you created this video. I ended up listening to a lot of Irish jigs growing up and felt the desire to step to it, but I didn't know how. I'm really grateful to this because now I can add this to my daily routine, even after spring break is over and you really break it down in a way that even those who are watching this as their first tutorial can fully understand.
I’m glad to hear all of this! I try my best to be as thorough as possible, as it is a pretty intricate art form! If you have any trouble with the more difficult tutorials, the half speed playback feature is really useful!
Love your videos & concise instructions. As an older adult I find the thought of taking classes with 4-10 year olds too awkward and even a bit embarrassing. Your videos allow me to happily step in my basement. Please keep them coming!!
I step danced when I was younger and can still fit in the handmade dress my aunt made in Ireland. Juuuuuust bought the soft & hard shoes. I feel like a little kid again now and can’t wait to hopefully get some muscle memory back from your videos! Thanks! 💃
Omg & yes I dance in my socks- which is horrible. In the time between not dancing was ALOT of living/lifting/nursing and a broken foot 😂 we’ll see how it goes. For some reason I feel like I want to make a jig or reel of colm’s black & tan but I’m not sure if it’s going to work out in this reality 😂 I’ll try ☘️
Tried this again today and… let me back up. I’ve danced other styles before, but when I tried this beginner light jig I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. It took a lot of practice and then I got busy with other stuff. I revisited it again today, months later, and… victory! I can do it, up to speed, and both sides. Now to put on some light jig music and drill it till I can’t forget. Thanks for making this video Tyler.
Glad that the rhythm is broken down into simple numerics. I watched a Celtic dance comp yesterday and not one of the 3 kids I asked had a clue about the time signature or which moves happened on which beats. One guy (older beginner) said he sang the words in his head.
You're very welcome! Hope you enjoyed the step! And if you did, be sure to check out the second step that pairs with this one! Thanks for your support!
With winter coming on, I'm looking for exercises to include in my "basement hero" routine, and this is a lot more fun than high-knees! It actually gets me breathing pretty hard pretty fast, I'm just not as light on my feet as you are. When I get more comfortable with this one I''m going to see what else you've got.
I have always loved to watch the Irish dance. I use to be in shape but due to injuries and age (65) I am not so good at it. But I just tried the dance you showed us. How fun but hard. I am going to try this everyday because one day I want to do the whole dance without stopping. Love it. Now I know how out of shape I am but intend to fix that. Thank you. 😅
I'm Dear Tyler. Hello from the Russian Empire !!! Thank you very much for posting a guide on how to dance a jig. For I swore to dance it at my aunt's grave. Hug you!!! Ilya Mikhailovich from Russia.
Hi Tyler, i came across this video because I really want to try Irish dance ( again) but in my own pace. I stopped my lessons because I was getting pain in my Shanebones 😥 so, your video looks easy to follow. I really go and start. And have fun with this 😁
Thanks for this great video! I took Irish Step in college and have taught a beginner class with my elementary students after school. It's been a few years, so this is a nice refresher and variation to what I already know.
not the type of dance to learn when im on the third floor of a townhouse... bet my brother in the room below me will love this at 1 am in the morning... XD
Thank you for publishing this beginning tutorial. I am a professional ballroom dance instructor and have been instructing one type of dance or another since I was 12 years old, with tap dance being one of my all-time favorites to this day. Recently I got into watching Irish step dancing, which has been a much needed inspirational journey, as it is giving me something new to learn and it's always fun to feel connected to my Irish heritage as well. I have a few detail questions about this video that I am curious about and need clarification on, if you would be so kind to provide it. 1. Are you in a demi turnout with both feet (45 degrees) for the entire jig? 2. should toes always be in a full point when they're off the ground, or should the ankle stay somewhat relaxed? 3. Are you starting in 5th position? The camera or at least my screen kept cutting your feet out of the picture and these important details could not be seen multiple times during the video. 4. What percentage of weight should be on the front of the foot versus the back of the foot, heel versus toes, and what percentage of weight should be on each foot when starting? 5. I dance for 6 Plus hours a day 5 days a week and never have my knees hurt but I was experiencing almost immediate torque pain in my knees particularly the left one from the get-go of practicing with your video. Is this type of dance just weird hard on the knees or am I doing something incorrectly such as turning my foot out too far versus where my hip is turned out? It's really the beginning foot position that seems to be creating this glitch in my body mechanics and I very much want to correct it so that I can continue to advance in this type of dance. I obviously need to avoid body brutality, so I can continue my career, so please advise if it is just notoriously hard on the knees in this way... I'm almost sure that it's user error, LOL. = Good dancing is good dancing and it should feel amazing when it's correct! Love & Starlight Thank you so much for your time and for being part of my new fetish kandi dance! inspiration! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Inspiration = Inspire Action!) 💜
5.) wow that’s a lot of dancing! It might just be overuse, but also yes irish dance isn’t easy on the joints. Be sure to warmup properly and all that good stuff before getting into the dancing!
Hi Tyler! Can you help me with some websites to find hard shoes for beginners? Your videos are really exciting, I enjoy all of them. Best wishes and thanks for the help if you can!
My downstairs neighbors will love this hahahaha
Oh you bet they do! 😂
I AM a downstairs neighbor...dance away!!
It's alright just tell them your irish lol

I would be like can I join you LMAO
This is how I will greet every Irish person from now on. Thank you
Awesome!! Haha

This is one of the best, clearest Irish dance instruction/demonstration videos I’ve ever seen. Thank you!
The learning of the jig starts at 3:03
You’re a hero.
Thank you ma'am
i love you
Thank you
Yay, St. Paddy’s day! I will learn as an ode to my ancestors, and to make my husband laugh at me. 🍀🍀🤣🤣

Agreed! I can see that being a little bit awkward. I'm happy to help!
Those kids better move over, because I'm entering (rehearsal) stage full Michael Flatley
Hello from Russia. This is the greatest lesson of The Irish dance. I love it and want to learn it as much as it possible now
Great tutorial!! Had to watch a few times through but got it within a half hour. Thank you!
That’s great to hear! The half speed playback feature is super useful as well :) happy dancing!
I'm a Québécois with Irish ancestors, and I love how they brought the jigs over here. Time to jig away for gram-gram!
I've never thought I could dance anything like this. Thank you, Tyler, you're a great teacher!
I love hearing this! Best of luck in your dancing journey!!

I’m in Irish dance and im a prize winner
Congrats!

I’ve always wanted to learn how to Irish dance because I’m half Irish ☘️🇮🇪
I hope it's the bottom half.😂
I have watched this video 20 time in 2 days 😀
I'm super sad we don't have any Irish Dance Studio here so your videos are really great to learn it at home! Thank you for that!
You're very welcome! Hope you enjoyed the step! And if you did, be sure to check out the second step that pairs with this one! Thanks for your support!
Every time I mention that I’m almost half Irish my friend tells me to hit the Irish jig so I’m doing this for her
As an American ginger who's learned an Irish accent, this is the next step of my plan. Then I'll eat Lucky Charms and begin guarding my gold.
love this
My sons (9 and7) really enjoyed watching. They have zero dance experience but it was great to see you as an inspirtation. Thank you!

Sounds great! I always think it's a better workout when your mind is fully engaged with the activity. That's why dance is so amazing!
you are one of those guys that likes to smell feet right
You make this look so easy!
Now I won't feel like I can't dance at my wedding. Thank you!

(Inspiration = Inspire Action!) 💜
1.) yes! For the most part all of irish dance is in a turnout heel to toe. There are always exceptions, but for the most part yes!
2.) similar answer, but yes! There are some tricks that flex all the way up!
3.) if you’re referring to heels off the floor, then yes!
4.) there’s a style preference here, but usually 50/50. Some dancers prefer more weight on the back foot in order to add a kick into the opening jump.
5.) wow that’s a lot of dancing! It might just be overuse, but also yes irish dance isn’t easy on the joints. Be sure to warmup properly and all that good stuff before getting into the dancing!

Love your shirt
🔥🔥 Always 🔥 Tyler!!!!!!! Thank you!

The best part about this is the fact that this jig is the first jig (and dance) that I ever learned too🥰
Can you tell me the name of the song?
Thank you Tyler! This was so easy to understand, I wish you were my teacher in real life, but this is amazing, thank you!!!
