I'm glad I'm not the only grown man that's fascinated by what would otherwise be overlooked and boring by most folks. It's pretty amazing to me how quickly life will take a foothold given water and a little sun light.

I wish I could do this experiment at home, but I live in a country with a heavy mosquito population so it's definitely not advisable. you could do it but you may just need anti mozzie mesh to keep the mosquitoes and other bugs out but still let other things enter it! (if things die/fall on the mesh you could always add it into your ecosystem and replace the mesh)

So I've commented this idea before and I know you've seen it but I am going to talk about more. So my idea is to make one ecosphere where you don't put microplastics and then make one that does have microplastics(I think you'll have to put plastic in a food processor. You should get all plastic types, grind them up then put the ratio of plastic according to what the most common plastic that pollutes water. So Polystyrene(styrofoam#6), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE#4), Polyethylene(PETE#1) and HDPE(#2)) I'll probably do this experiment myself but you should also do it since you will reach many people with your research. I'm excited to see how visible the change is, What animals will die, and will any lifeform thrive? The water samples under a microscope will be crazy!

I wonder how an experiment like this would go if you blocked one type of common species from appearing -- for instance, putting mosquito dunks in the water, which specifically targets aquatic fly larvae. I know the focus is the natural progression of the ecosystem, but I wonder how drastically things would be different with a little human input.
