  • Newport Transporter Bridge crosses the River Usk in Newport, South Wales. It opened on 12th September 1906 to link the residential district of Pillgwenlly on the West side of the river with the main industrial area and docks on the East side. This type of bridge was chosen, as the tidal nature of the river prevented use of a ferry and it did not interfere with tall masted ships navigating the river. Joint engineers were Robert Haynes (Borough Engineer) and the experienced French Engineer, Ferdinand Arnodin. It is a Grade 1 listed structure being the largest and oldest example in Britain and one of only eight, which remain in the world, six in working order and two requiring restoration. Filmed on 12th July 2013 by Alan Davies.

Brilliant Engineering ! I had no idea a Bridge like this wonderful piece of Engineering existed. I'd like to know how it works mechanically.
