    nice to see that someone tries to repair such great machines. I have here a grundig V2000 for restoration. Will try it next year when have time left. I know these old philips Vr20xx series 1gen. They were a graveyard of pcb-inserts and the service-manual was a folder of 5cm thick.
    you can find the service manual from the VR2340 which you needed at elektroTanya, search for it, can´t put links here.
    They have a lot of schematics and manuals of vintage electronics

    I would'nt have sent the file until he paid. If he keeps saying he needs the footage urgently for his job, you just say you need the money to feed your family. :)

      Yes... pay before you collect... we do this all the time. It is not perfect... sometimes you never hear from them again, and we still did the job... but anyway... never send something without pay...

  • @rolfbeil

    @15:45 The button on the left only switches the machine OFF. You power it on by pressing a function key. So this is normal behaviour.
    On my 2340 I had to fix all the solder joints on those stupid interconnecting bare copper wires on the 'clock' board. You may want to take a look at them on your machine.

    Getting paid is always an issue, no matter the platform or service/ product. I tend to go for the most secure payment platforms, but it's always a hassle and whenever I am the (online) customer I prefer to prepay any goods or services. I feel this makes transactions more "friendly" for both parties. However, I've also noticed that when being forced to prepay and then later receiving a shipping bill (or a second bill of any type) it spoils it for me.
    I don't think I comment on your videos often enough. I do enjoy them tremendously (even if sometimes I only get small bits during my morning shower - this one I did watch in it's entirety on a Saturday evening on my living room TV as my wife was taking a nap ;-)
    I applaud your efforts for trying to fix any 2300 model V2000 VCR. I remember these as being particularly terrible - a 2020 or 2022 would usually start working again (in the early to mid 90's) if you kicked them violently enough. Yes, that sounds awful, but I had around 150 ex-rental movies/ tapes on V2000. I'd use the entire side of my foot and kick the side of the VCR (at peak I had about 40 of them, my best own repair being a soldered-on coax connector hanging out of the back of one). Sometimes it took several tries. And you of all people know how heavy these machines are... to kick one with the side of your foot and have it move several metres across bedroom carpet... But they'd work again. At least long enough to finish the beat-up ex-rental copy of Battlestar Galactica. That was the actual state some of the parts on these PCBs were in by the 90's - you had to violently kick the electrochemicals back to life.
    That's how V2000 died unfortunately. In the bedrooms of teenagers. I guess I was one of the last.
    Those nasty 23s... Hardly been used. Sometimes near new in the original box. No amount of kicking ever worked on those. And I had lots of them... Honestly, I've never seen a working one. And I grew up near Eindhoven. And my dad worked at the Philips head office.
    Pretty sure a seriously downsized V2000 engineering team was working on the 2400 series by the time these 23s were designed and manufactured (speculation on my part).
    How brave you are.

    Its great watching you work on this machine. I've fixed a few over the years, the last many year ago randomly ran slow as it heated up (everything went slow including head drum), and I have a current one that develops picture interference after a few minutes that ends up looking like VHS macrovision. I love the look and size of the machines, but hate working on them. I swear they have a mind of their own!

    Hi Colin, usually i never release the digitized footage to the customer until the payment came through to my bank card. Of course, the file is prepared and is ready to be released, but payment must go first. At least this is how i work.

    • @kimpetersen2848
      @kimpetersen2848 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree. When a new customer wants something done urgent, that turns on the big red warning-lights for me. In such cases, always get paid in advance, before any work is done. In many cases, trying to rush you and making the job extremely urgent, is nothing more than a trick to make you loose focus on getting your payment, before its too late. Great videos, Colin !

  • @polyman2
    @polyman2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    After a job is complete inform them of that fact with maybe a very short clip. Tell them that they need to settle the bill before you will release the complete file.

  • @Capturing-Memories
    @Capturing-Memories 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just set a payment policy, no work will be delivered before payment clears. If someone wanted an urgent result pay in advance before the material get digitized. You wouldn't loose customers if you are clear about this, and if you do, it will be the customers who are not going to pay in the first place. Good luck.

  • @richclips
    @richclips 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely machine, I hope you can bring it back to life 🤩 regards taking payments, yea I wouldn't offer to do the work before you've received payment, sadly some people just take the Michael, I've been on that situation before too with audio repairs. I came to the conclusion that if it's repeat business from someone you know and trust, then fine, but otherwise it's payment first.

  • @jamesm90
    @jamesm90 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Payment before any files are delivered would be perfectly reasonable. It's a shame that a few scumbags spoil the trust in the rest of us.

  • @stickytapenrust6869

    That odd behaviour from the VCR just *HAS* to be a mechanical issue on the front panel board(s) or on anything it plugs into on the main body of the VCR, something is being disturbed every time you took that front panel off. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if the non-opening of the cassette tray has a similar cause, the signal to the cassette tray motor may take a different path than it does to the on/off control system.
    As for the payment issue, I do this occasionally for people (I mainly use my kit for getting old TV station continuity announcements and full programmes for my TH-cam channel, but as I have the kit to do an acceptable job of capturing I’ll occasionally do a paid job like you do if asked). When I do it, I do it on the condition always made clear beforehand that I will do the transfer but the customer does *NOT* get either the tape or the new media with the content on until that money has arrived in my account! No exceptions. If they protest against this or are taken aback by this policy, I explain why it is the way it is, but reminding them that I trust they won’t try and scam me out of time and money but the policy stands for everyone because as usual it’s the minority that ruins things for the majority!
    As it’s a policy of mine I state it upfront, and that by proceeding with my services they agree that they will not get either the original media or a copy on a modern format back until I’ve been paid. That way if they don’t pay up and argue that I have stolen their tape, I will have documented evidence that they agreed me to keep the material until I have received payment. I’ve actually had this once before where he (a closer relation of Mr. Nean Der Thal than me) threatened me with legal action if I didn’t send him the material. I politely told him to go ahead and I’ll show the police or the judge the email where he agreed for me to keep the material until I got paid, it’s not theft if the customer is agreeing to me keeping the media until I’m paid.
    He gave in and paid me after that!
    And if they argue back at the point of charging them for the services that they can’t afford it etc, then while I empathise with their situation, it’s their name on their bank accounts, so I’m not going to give them special treatment as *they* are responsible for managing their finances, it’s nothing to do with me because I’m not named as their bank account owner.
    I know it’s quite a frosty way of speaking to people online and I don’t like doing it but sometimes you just have to speak with total brutal honesty.
    If they still haven’t paid after x weeks or months then you can recoup the losses by selling their old videotapes on. There are plenty of people who are interested in old content on tapes (like me!) or interested in old videotape tech and need the media to use in their VCRs or camcorders.

    • @azmath2059
      @azmath2059 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree totally. This is a great policy regarding the payment of services.

  • @fluxjunkie6645
    @fluxjunkie6645 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes I am in a similar industry but more on the film industry side.I have had this happen to me and I now have a strict policy if it is so urgent they can pay upfront first.the honest ones always pay first no argument .The others seem to never get back to me.it also seems the terribly urgent jobs are the worst at paying.maybe you should charge a bit extra for urgent work

    I wonder if there's an easy-to-use online platform that lets you only release the file download after the payment has been made. You could get the conversion and upload done right away, then as soon as the client pays, they can download their file(s) straight away. That might be a happy medium.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I upload files with wetransfer.com and there is a password feature. But I was trying to be helpful by allowing the customer to get the file straight away. Usually I don't get ripped off like that.

    Common faults on these are the program wheel on the bottom that gets dirty and causes all sorts of funny mechanical effects, and the two pins that the cassette slides over with its brass tape guides, they have a plastic cover that tends to crack and makes the cassette not lower far enough. Even worse, if you try to thread then, chances are it will pull the tape over the drum and wreck the DTF contacts...

  • @LibraAudioLaboratory
    @LibraAudioLaboratory 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    And i very hope, sincerely, the heads and DTF sliders are still in good conditions.

    This VR2324 like other 200X series VTR need a complete bonification of all capacitors.
    Same as a disaster of cold solder joints, on the board and connectors.

      Getting deeply involved in the PSU at the moment. The 12b line is being disabled by a circuit around transistor 7005 or the LM358. Additionally it's intermittently blowing the fuses for the 21a line.

    Never deliver the goods until payment is received. You can even take it a step further if you are well known. Full payment even before the job begins. I think large transfer companies do this. But you must make the process easy and painless for the customer. Your business website is like from 2002. Ordering not easy. Maybe hire a professional to design a commerce site, it won't be cheap however.

  • @TM-hx7mm
    @TM-hx7mm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To answer you question would you release goods before payment? Short answer is no
    I have had it done to me and once bitten etc
    At the end of the day it’s theft regardless of how much
    You wouldn’t walk into say Asda and grab a loaf of bread and walk out on a promise you will go back later and pay.

    Excellent and informative video. Have you ever worked on a VR2022? I am currently battling with one, that.....started by shutting down when any deck function was used. This turned out to be the three relays, under the deck. It's latest, charming fault, is to start playing back, but, display no picture or sound. I have parked it for now, but, will have one final go at it, before it becomes a spares deck.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had that bad relay fault years ago. I wrote a piece in Television Magazine about it, not long before it ceased publication. In my case it would run for a random amount of time, sometimes hours, before shutting down. No picture or sound might be easier to solve. The service manuals are very complete on the VR2022.

    I had one of these VR2324 machines that kept randomly blowing one of the fuses, not sure what happened to that one, I think it got stripped down for parts. I've worked on a number of these 2nd generation V2000 machines over the years and found the most common fault seems to be chewing tapes due to a worn pinch roller.

    Ah, I'm sorry that's happened Colin. I'm in my 13th year of teaching people how to drive and learned very early on to be pre-paid.
    However, I lost 7 months work in the accumulated lock downs. That didn't stop the bills coming in and didn't stop me getting charged for my franchise (even though it was reduced).
    So it's just £15 you've lost...the energy companies would threaten legal action for less. Your genuine customers won't have any problem with pre-payment, even if it's a 50% deposit (like I recently had to pay for a new garage door).
    However, Boris leads us all through utter dishonesty....

    I would be tempted to name and shame someone on my channel who didn't pay for my cine scans.
    During the three years I was charging to scan cine film for people, I had the film to hold on to, that pretty much held them to ransom, so to speak. I was lucky I always got paid.
    Put it down to one bad apple and next time don't post the link until the money is paid.
    That way you can still pride yourself on your work and your ability to provide a very efficient service, and hopefully not get ripped off again.
    I happen to know from my experience, as do my fellow Navy Lads, that you are a very kind man, unfortunately the amount of unkind people who would take advantage, out number you.....
    There are no excuses, couple of clicks on a phone or tablet and money can be at paypal inside 5 minutes while you are at the departure gate or on a train or whatever.. There can be no excuse for not paying.
    If you have the skills to deliver in record time, then the customer HAS to pay on time, or no product.
