Got that right. Bettman and his never-ending minions have taken the control away from the players and put the suits in control - which has never been effective.

Everyone on the Stars bench was thinking to themselves "Why did Ludwig have to go do that?" Ducks had a pretty tough team playing that night.

This game and those amazing times of yesteryear truly proved the old adage "Hockey Players Are The Toughest Athletes In The World." Not seeing on ice full tilt battles like this anymore is tough for any of us who want the aggression back and this softened up for the kill era to end. I rest my case.

If I'm not mistaken, Severyn motions immediately to the trainer after he hit Sydor with that last one. On first look, I thought he was waving on Belfour to come fight him, but then on the replay, I realized he motioned immediately and he was interviewed IIRC years later and he felt absolutely terrible. And that the goalie was Roman Turek. Who Backstopped the Blues to the presidents' trophy two years later.

Just wonder why Leboutillier or some other Ducks player did not really go after Niuwendyk or any other Stars front line player? Clearly Ludwig had no intention to follow any code so rest of the game was "jail rules" or no rules at all. Nice two hand slash to knees or even to head would done the same to N what Ludwig did to Selanne.

Stars were wearing their alternate uniform at home back then. Why they’re in the dark jersey at their place. These alternates would later become their regular jerseys. But when this game occurred, they were a beautiful alternate on the national game on Fox.

Thanks to the elbow on Selanne the Ducks brought back Grimson and got Jim McKenzie for the next season. And the Stars got Severyn from the Ducks.

I feel like now a days players are more reckless because the worst they will see is a few games suspension. That might be worth taking a start player out. Pietrangelo nearly took Draisaitl's hand off in the playoffs (2023) and gets a couple of games. Never had to answer for his actions beyond that. In the 90's he would have been absolutely destroyed or if not him a skill player on his team would have had to answer the bell. That would end a bunch of these nasty hits from behind and two hand slashes that seem to be so prevalent.

@@robertfloyd3081 McKenzie didn't really jump him though. If you watch how it starts both McKenzie and Sydor come flying into the scrum and they collide with each other and Sydor catches McKenzie with a pretty good forearm/elbow. At that point McKenzie drops his gloves and is clearly very upset, and Sydor turtles. McKenzie then rains down punches.

@@robertfloyd3081 You know I never noticed Marty hanging around the waste of Sydor... Lol. I just watched it as well. Sydor definitely saw McKenzie coming though and got his elbow/forearm up. I don't know if that's what got big Jim so angry, but he pounded on a turtling Sydor, and that wasn't the norm for Gentle Jim (Domi aside). I wouldn't be surprised if he was suspended for it. It looked pretty brutal.

    • @bpeezy2254

@@michaelfalkner1186 This is the age old debate. Those who liked the game with this in it are labeled knuckle dragging Neanderthals by those who didn't. Contrary to popular belief, there was actually sublime skill and highlight reel goals on display every night when this was going on. But as incidents like these have been legislated out of the game, can you definitively say the game is safer? Better? Dangerous stick infractions, freight train boardings, vicious chargings are all a part of the game now that players aren't holding each other accountable, and games are regularly halted for 10 minutes while talking heads debate players' intentions and split hairs over principle points of contact. Is that sporting? To each his own.
This was the way the game used to be played. Players like Craig Ludwig got what was coming to them or had the receipts transferred to their teammates. There's always the game within the game. Some of us miss it.
