Pete going off on the guitar at the end WTF 😮 Two whole years ahead of Jimi doing similar stuff. Pete was definitely the leading edge of rock and roll getting MUCH edgier
We are so used to seeing moon on the triple 14x8” Tom kits playing in a fully ambidextrous style we forget just how solid and skilled he maneuvers around a Ludwig Super Classic
John playing his Rickenbacker. Only three were sent to the UK at the time I believe. Those three sold to: John, Pete Quaife(Kinks) and Chris squire(Yes)
Yeah, Pete, Dave Davies and Jeff Beck are my favorite guitar players because of what they did in 1964 -1966. Rock playing afterwards or copied during those years to me, seems like "building on the ground breaking foundations of" those three. And it was so concise too. Not self indulgent. Eddie Phillips of The Creation probably should be name checked too.
Pete is spellbinding. I mean they're all great, including what I could see of the neck of John's bass, lol, but Pete is just something special. Even at this stage you can see he's in his own world, already moving at top speed toward a bull's eye he can't really see but still believes is out there ahead of him. His musicality is inspiring but it's his intentionality & what motivates him that make him peerless. Thankyou so much for sharing this footage!
It's funny that Entwhistle and Moon were such amazing musicians that it held Pete back from becoming the incredible guitarist he is today. He's complained about having to play with them, but now that they are gone he has to step up his game as a guitarist and it really shows.
You can really see what the band was trying to do here. What is impressive is how loud they are. The sound is very full because of how locked in Moon and Enthwistle are. Harmonies on Heatwave are nice- as is Daltrey's harp playing on the later track (Smokestack Lightening?). Townsend is very avant garde for the time
Right? Rogers killing it on the harp. All of them are killing it tho as always. Love the pounding rickenbacker bass tone I wish John Kept using rickenbackers though I can’t complain about his tone he’s always had a great sound.
Oh I love those guys so much! I've had the privilege of watching The Who 3 times in the space of a year - so much energy! I love seeing this old footage. They really were incredible. I wish I'd been around then, too. Gotta love their power and innovation - they don't get enough credit for it.
They set the path for Jimi Hendrix, and are the main reason for me why I´m not interested in either metal or punk or so-called alternative. This is the original. Together with the Experience, the last real innovators in rock history.
+twezzo99 It's so good to see someone saying that they were innovative and set others on their paths. They don't get enough credit in my opinion- and although Jimi Hendrix was innovative in his own right, Pete Townshend was doing things whether on purpose or not that others latched on to later. Was it Woodstock where they tossed a coin to decide Who's on first (sorry, couldn't resist)? That showed people a thing or two...
Pete supposedly used a Bassman head thru a Marshall cab to record "My Generation" and most other early Who hits, this is most likely the same amp and speakers.
Great stuff. This almost shows the power of volume. Keith really bashes out the beat, but as with those who do manual labor, hardly breaks a sweat. Nearing the end you the see the effect of prolonged amplification - it is body's inclination to violence- shown in Pete. Going deaf is like going numb and driven by the boogie, creates a lashing out response. All this in only 1965?
So heavy metal is being born before our eyes. It was Pete's idea, he talked to McCartney about an idea for a super heavy guitar riff based song. Paul went home & wrote "Helter Skelter." Pete wrote "I can see for Miles."
