This is fun, and I know you can find quite a bit of homoerotic subtext in the Sam/Frodo Merry/Pippin and Gimli/Legolas pairs, but to me, one of the strengths of LOTR is how gloriously asexual it is. It definitely is romantic, but treats romance like a beautiful landscape, poetry, history, not as a standalone or special thing. And I find a lot of value in a world where fulfillment is explicitly outside of sexual life, but in so many other beautiful things. Like, it really shows of a beautiful world, beautiful lives, full of rich experiences, friendships and emotions that doesn't need sex to be complete. To me, it's a love letter to an ace lifestyle, somehow, and I claim it as ace representation (which imo is really lacking). And maybe more importantly too, not even the worst enemies and most cruel monsters are depraved enough to commit sexual violence. Tolkien described the most evil he could conjure, and yet he deemed sexual violence to be even worse somehow, and not worthy to enter his books. Respect!
I agree!
