Funny, I just listened to the Smartless episode and had me digging for Fad Gadget. I do remember hearing this track back in the day but wouldn't been able to identify the artist.
Frank's performances were always incredibly polarizing - the tarred and feathered look really took it up a notch. This song, with industrial percussion courtesy of Einstürzende Neubauten, and it's biting lyrics remain one of the true highlights of the 80's underground music. Thanks for providing the higher quality audio - I wish I could find the original video footage to see all the detail. RIP Frank Tovey - like the smearing of tar and feathers, you left a truly indelible mark on music!!
What a great answering machine choice! I miss specifically listening for music or snippets of sound that would be good for that. Thank you for spurring some good memories. :)
Awesome song I don't know why I like alot of weird eighties music like this I love the coke bottles part I feel like getting some sticks and hitting a few bottles lol.
LOVE IT AFTER % SECONDS! WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE FAD GADGET??? FINALLY, GOT YOU! MY FIRST TUNE OF YOURS- VERY SAISFIED! 80TIES SOUNDING, BUT DIFFERENT SOMEHOW! HOW? JUST DIFFERENT! OUT OF THOUSANDS OTHER SONGS, NOT BAD! IT STAYS IN MY FILES FOR GOOD! WOW! LUCKY ME! THANX GUYS, NICE SURPRISE! REGARDS, THOMAS(POLAND-CHICAGO)
This was always one of my favourites. I bought the Mute Records 12-inch as soon as it came out. I still have it. But I never did catch the video, until now. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if Fad's sound inspired Depeche Mode's shift to "industrial" around the time the released the "Some Great Reward" EP. They were both signed by the great Daniel Miller ( Silicon Teens), to Mute Records, in the early 80's. From what I've read they recorded in an small studio and ran on a limited budget. People borrowed each other's instruments and equipment and contributed small, uncredited pieces to other albums that were being recorded. It sounded like an extremely intimate situation to say the least lol.
depeche mode was formed because they saw fad gadget live together in '79. i would guess that they continued to borrow frank's sound as it evolved through his career
Funny. I'm from NH now but went on vacation with old boyfriend. Always listened to college radio from Lowell, MA. He recorded this onto cassette. I fell in love with Frank and went to Canada and Toronto. Went into a record store and they had all the music I loved but could not get here. I have all on vinyl and still as pristine as when I got them. Gag, fireside favorites, under the flag and may eps
Ahh - So goo d to see good quality vid of this - Thanks - Brings back memories of one of the most surreal stupendous gigs I ever went to - FG at the Camden Electric Ballroom.
How can this sound like Depeche Mode when Collapsing New People was from 1983? I mean, the Mode boys were still very much in the synth-pop thingy. They were only getting into Get The Balance Right and Love In Itself, and only just detecting industrial ingredients. If I remember correctly, DM was even support-act of Fad Gadget at the time.....only righteous at that moment. Let's try not to compare to DM too much, okay?
yeah ... a little digging will show fad gadget/frank tovey as a MONUMENTAL influence on depeche mode. there's a great documentary on frank to be seen too that makes some mention of this and has some great interviews.
Yes, that's exactly where the song was inspired. From Wikipedia: "During the recording of Gag the German industrial band, Einstürzende Neubauten, were recording for Some Bizzare Records at Hansa and had been the support act for Fad Gadget at a gig at "The Loft" venue in Berlin. Frank liked their use of Industrial equipment and found objects, something he had encouraged Nick Cash (his drummer and percussionist since his first album) to do. Frank Tovey heard a large printing press nearby which had a distinctive rhythm and got Gareth Jones the co-producer/engineer to record it, this was looped and became the basis for "Collapsing New People."
What is the surest way of getting booked on an East German music television show in the mid-80s? Why tar and feather yourself, of course! Cheers, Frank Tovey (R.I.P.)
This reminds me circa 1984 of More ultra long cigarettes, off the shoulder Yamamoto inspirired Japanese style blouses, and ultra slim, pencil thin, skirts.
The "it" look at the time was the "Hiroshama" look inspired by the cult of the Japanese desingers of the 80's. Slicked back hair, with the front hair tweaked high. The clothes would be Comme des garcons, or Y. Yamoto inspired. Pencil thin long almost floor length skiirts with off the shoulder blouses.
My ex wife sent this to me and asked if I remember this tune. I don't remember hearing it but it would have fit into the teen club scene in Orange County and LA back in 81, 82, 83. Circle city in orange. The Odyssey in LA. Nightscape in orange. 321 club in Santa Monica.
Man, I miss rolling up to the club on my motorcycle dressed like a freak, finding a freak and dancing like a freak.
all people commenting here are my 80's comrades, lets raise a glass to the innovating artists that plowed a path of fun music.
Here here 🍷 🥂
:D 🥂
I wish everytime I say "Collapsing New People" someone hits some bottles in a good series of notes
I'm curious how the same kind of bottles have a different pitch.
Me too!
@@kristopherkrueger4617Are we to believe that these are some sort of a magic bottles or something?
I wish I had known about this group in the 80s but thanks to Depeche Mode | Smartless for turning me on to Fad Gadget. .

Gone way too soon.
💜☮💜
Did Ein Neu play with any other artists back in the day? Did they even do anything with DM?
Use to listen to this song over and over back in the day. Even had the first few seconds like maybe up to a minute of it on my answering machine :-)
What a great answering machine choice! I miss specifically listening for music or snippets of sound that would be good for that. Thank you for spurring some good memories. :)
Susan, killin it on the beer bottles over there. Keep it up.
Rip Frank Tovey you were truly on the cutting edge of music
One of the best post punk times and artists. Collapsing new people, and digital from Joy Division are brilliant

I totally forgot about this kick ass song!!! Heard it on KROQ in L.A. Back in the 80s.

Frank Tovey was hugely underrated! May he continue to rest in peace.
absolutely - he was a synth god
WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!!!
Right here.
mid eighties new wave in optima forma. I love it.
This was always one of my favourites. I bought the Mute Records 12-inch as soon as it came out. I still have it. But I never did catch the video, until now. Thanks for sharing.
The name is reference to Einsturzende Neubauten (Callapsing New Buildings) who are the instrumentalists on the song!

Came looking for this after hearing it tonight on E4's "Tripped". Rad stuff, definitely need to look further into the legacy of Fad Gadget.
Take hours of preparation, to get that wasted look.

If anything, this song was inspired by Einsturzende Neubauten (Collapsing New Buildings)
i dont understand the joke?
Frank was like P.S. "122(?)" a la "abc no rio (?)" multiplied by "early "mute (?)" records (?)" on so-called "steroids (?)". For Frank Tovey (RIP)..

This was a must have band in my new wave collection
As a rather young teen, one of my first club moments is Fad Gadget.
music doesn't get any better than this.
TOP 80s BANGER finally found thanks to Succession Ep 8. Proper haunter.
Frank Tovey Aka Fad Gadget was so far ahead of his time.
@MidnightSunOfDark Depeche Mode waren mal ne Vorgruppe von Fad Gadget! Früher in den Achtzigern. : ) Wurden direkt danach wegen ihrer Vorstellung auch unter Vertrag genommen.
I love Fad Gadget. one of my first true club experiences was circa 1984 with Fad Gadget at Bumpers, Whalley, Surrey, Canada
He sounds a lot like Peter Murphy from Bauhaus
Thank you for uploading this video!
Succession brought me here.
Einstuertzendes Neuvolk - Neubauten noch.
oh My God, this reminds me to Koln (Germany) in the 80s... gosh what memories.
Holy sh*t, I miss the 80's! Lol
Un must du début 80.Excellent !
Just realized they are Perrier bottles. So fitting for the 80s!
Pretty sure that's a Porsche 911. Also fitting.

Memo stuff , years 80 ..legends..
The look at the time was pencil thin long skirts for woman and More 100's, smoking was elegant in the 80;s . OMG!!!
I love the tar and feathers.
When weird was actually weird, and not some stupid tik tok video.
this really rocks

This reminds me circa 1984 of More ultra long cigarettes, off the shoulder Yamamoto inspirired Japanese style blouses, and ultra slim, pencil thin, skirts.
I always thought Frank's weapon of choice was a Roland JX-3P. I might be right
A true legend. RIP Frank/Fad
best song..aweee
Einsturzende Neubauten, en support
I like the part where the guitar gets drunk and lets it all hang out.

Is there more of this performance?
This is fucking cool...!
the 80's were so cool...
I wonder how many thought this was a Bauhaus song! :)
Unforgettable!
The 80s man...WoW.
I got here too late. By the time I discovered Fad Gadget he’d been dead for 10 years.
I am successfully calling this pop industrial
ide be like "dude! im trying to play this hood of a car here, stop messing with me or im going to screw up"
Oh no Depeche Mode ripped this guy off....he should have sued them...the buggers
Great stuff
R.I.P Frank.
I think it has a little dmode like fly on the windscreen or blasphemous rumors but this song has such a repetitive churning groove. Very unique
I can hear that, I think it's because DM were influenced by Fad (not surprising, I mean, who isn't influenced by this guy in one way or another? Haha)
This sounds a lot like Naked Eyes - What in the name In the Love
amaaazingg I luvvvvv f.g////greattttt
Yes ! John Aston
ESTE SI QUE ERA UN FRONTMAN....GRANDE FRANK,RIP
OK this song is making me hear things, this is not okay
