My second favorite Zeppelin record behind PG, but it opens with my #1 favorite LZ tune. I love the early records with their reworking of old blues tunes, folk ballads, and straightforward rockers, but this record for me is extra special cause the Zep is flexing their FUNK, which they execute with moxy and zeal, though it also feels really loose compared to a lot of the earlier material. Considering they were going through a lot of struggles (Plant in a wheelchair, and addiction issues), in contrast, it feels like they were really just trying to relax and enjoy the process of jamming together on this slab.
Which is doubly remarkable to me, considering the time crunch they were under, Jimmy’s drug issues and Robert’s physical condition and depression. Remarkable. But hell, they were just that good
Depends on how you define under rated. It was a huge commercial success and got a lot of radio play, unlike Presence. But some music critics didn't like it. I think it's fabulous.
@@wiredhorn87 When I was traveling back in the early 80's I had 3 cassette tapes with me to listen to on a bus trip from the east coast to the west coast. Who's Next, Houses of The Holy and In Through the Out Door. I know every word to these songs having played them for hours on end. I love ITTOD...just felt it deserved more credit than given to at the time. Yes, it had commercial success for a few songs, but good, deep cuts never saw the light of day. There is no bad Zep album.
@@leemcclements8889 I'm with ya! Born in '69, I don't remember, of course, the release of I - Houses, but I definitely remember In Through The Out Door because my classic rock stations (Tampa Bay Area) were saturated with it from its release all the way thru the 80s. The song that turned me on to Zep was All My Love. I heard it on my older brother's boom box, about 1980, and it immediately resonated with me as being so beautiful and moving. I asked him, "Who is that?". He answered like I was stupid and just curtly said, "Led Zeppelin". I became a megafan. It is still in my Zep top 5. Presence is definitely their FUNKIEST album...what's great though is hearing this one and the last two you did one after another, bang-bang-bang! They all roll off nicely together. Jimmy knew what he was doing in that regard!

@@Michael-Philip yeah, I'm no musician (although I noodle a bit on an acoustic guitar, playing chords & riffs to Zep tunes I picked up over the years). I just know which songs & albums have drawn me back again & again and that's pretty much Zep 1-4, HOTH, and PG. ITTOD is like a different band, but I enjoy it on its own terms. Presence never had as much of a magnetic effect on me, but (like I suggested above) these reactions may change that!
As a kid, I got a LOT of "turn that down" coming from other parts of the house when this album was playing.. Except for my Grandmother who said that this song was, and I quote " That music is Hot to Trot"... A kindred spirit, no doubt..
I haven't heard many of these songs in years though I listen to Zeppelin quite often. Thanks for this deep dive into their discography, it has awakened my appreciation for many of their songs I had forgotten about. I look forward to your reaction to In Through the Out Door.
The Band sounds absolutely amazing on this album, and on this track. Jimmy's guitar layers are not about fancy riffs or 32nd note solos. He is blending different sounds, volumes, echos, distortion and intensity to produce a symphonic affect the way an orchestra does when they use additional instruments to emphasize parts of a composition. John and JPJ are their usual stellar selves, producing sharp, clear, and decisive rhythm to this absolute gem of mixing and producing a new sound for the band on this album. Robert Plant, whether or not his voice has changed from younger days, finds new ways to shock the listener while still providing a tone and cadence that leaves no doubt you're listening to LZ!
The last song left on the album is one of my favorites, it's a little different tempo but it hits the right chord when your in a pensive mood. I'm enjoying your journey.
Robert wrote the lyrics to express his increasing dissatisfaction with his (then) current life situation and if you read them, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. The lyric "I've got friends who will give me f*ck all" (he sings "flock" or "fluck" in an attempt to fool censors) is directed at Jimmy and manager Peter Grant, whom Robert felt weren't being sympathetic to his situation of injury, being worried about his family, homesick, etc., not to mention the drugs that were going around. Musically, it had bits of its start from some of the improvisation Jimmy would do during various performances of Dazed. He'd regularly remember bits of spontaneous riffs and whatnot and file them away for potential use in later material. It also has hints of "borrowed" sounds from their song Walter's Walk, which they'd worked on a little but wouldn't get released until CODA. It came together in about an hour's time in studio.
I used to be "that guy" in high school, one of those who brought a jambox with him, blasting it thru the halls during class breaks, at lunch, etc. The rockers dug it, anyhow, lol. But I had THIS song playing sometimes, and other Zeppelin "hidden gems," and more casual Zeppelin fans, "reacting" to it as well, were like "THAT'S ZEPPELIN??!" they had no idea Presence or "Hots on for nowhere" existed, cos the radio didn't play them. I was proud to spread that gospel, and proud to spread it LOUD!
When I was in high school in the late 70's, a good friend and I were deep into the Zeppelin. One of us made a homemade mix 8-Track tape of various Zeppelin. (If you can believe that not only did one of us have a machine at home that you let you record vinyl onto 8-track, but apparently, one or both of us had 8-track stereos in our cars. The thing about those 8-tracks, there were four "programs", I think they called them, each 15 minutes long. So it would play that 15 minutes, then there'd be a loud awkward clunk sound and it would start playing the next 15 minutes. It was really hard to time things out in that format, and even professional releases trying to mimic the albums would sometimes fade a song down in the middle, allow for the program change, then fade back up into the rest of the song. That tape we had, "Hots On For Nowhere" changed programs during it. Right after the line that says something about the "rain, dear", there'd be a loud clunk and it would go straight into "Dancing Days". We listened to that tape a lot, and ever since, when it gets to the "rain, dear" part, I'm always a little thrown off that it doesn't immediately go into "Dancing Days"...
Hah, great story, i still have memories of similar "special moments" in songs I heard countless times on my cassette tapes that still percolate up to my awareness when I hear their same flawless versions today, lol! One example is my friend Roger recorded the Stones "Street Fighting Man" for me one time. He knocked a button sideways and launched it from recording the radio to "record with a live mic." So Mick's singing "I shout and scream, I kill the King, I rail at all his"---and suddently Roger's voice is saying "Oh, f***!" as he realizes his mistake before switching it back to the Stones playinglol!
Zep was a great utilizer of space. Did that a lot on this album. To me, Presence is a top three Zep album. One of my favs. And this song one of my favorite Jimmy solos.
That's how Led Zeppelin grabs you by the head and ears --- and blows your skull cap off w a deep groove full of stank and head spinning "say what's ?!" groove ! They were incredible and to think - this album ended up in the bargain bin - LOL. Bonzo's fills are insane from the middle of the song through the end! You want some greasy, grizzled, melancholy blues - up next "Tea for One."
Loving to see you guys appreciate this underrated LP. Def a banger and love that controlled casual approach that Page takes on the solo. The next one is a slow burner, blues masterpiece IMO; think you will approve🔥
Robert had his accident so the tour was off. Jimmy booked studio time for two weeks. Worked 20hr days to finish it. And what you hear from Robert is a man who was in a wheel chair singing when u should’ve been resting.
Presence is one of my top fav Zeppelin records right there with PG, but Presence really brings that swinging funk groove like none of their others, which made it one of their catalogue I would spin the most.

Their previous two albums featured plenty of keyboards, acoustic guitar, various playing styles. It's nice to hear them on Presence get back to basics: electric guitars, bass, and drums. And they really show off their rhythmic dexterity. Deep, complex grooves on this album that most bands would not be able to pull off. On every track, what JPJ and Bonham are playing is SICK.
that groove that Bonham and JPJ laid down, made this song....one of the lesser known gems that LZ gave us. And that guitar outro that JP laid down was just full bodied and in your face.
There was a story about Bonzo going onstage at a Who concert? grabbing the mic and saying this is John Bonham from Led Zeppelin and we got a new album called Presence and it kicks A**! Don't know if its true but there's video of Keith Moon hangin jamming onstage with Zep so anything's possible! Anyway I always loved Presence and feel that it truly showcases Bonzo's super powers!
Always liked how this album seemed like a departure with Nobody’s Fault and Achilles Last Stand. Then the last song, Tea For One brings you back to the first album. Better than advertised.
Week that Presence was released (early April '76), Billboard charts featured Johnny Taylor (Disco Lady), Captain & Tenille, Bay City Rollers .. that contributed to my affection for this album.
I've been listening to this Lp since the day it came out and it NEVER gets old. I defy any group on their best day to match THE POWER of this one song let alone the rest of the Lp. PEACE LOVE LED ZEPPELIN

I always loved this track!!! It’s crazy how good the album is and how often brushed aside because album sales weren’t that good when released. So much was happening in music at that time. Disco reared it’s head…Donna Summer, KC and the sunshine band
Comin back for my third comment here, cos I just have to say how pulse-quickening I find Bonzo's newly energetic groove funktastic beat right after jimmy's solo (4:04) Really builds on the Momentum. I just feel like the band's beckoning us with "Come on! Let's go! Fun's up ahead!" Despite Robert's clever but sort of angry lyrics, this whole song's musical mood is just so damn JOYOUS.
The struggle was real trying to figure out the lyrics to this one. I swear I must have heard it a thousand times over the course of years before I did. Lots of LP's back then didn't have lyrics on the inner sleeve(s). Like this one. 😀
Thanks guys, as a Zep enthusiast you can get stuck on playing your favourites. So great to listen to all of these albums in the correct sequence again.
Yep, me too! I think they'll effing love it, or be bored by it. Nothing in between. But I think they'll be over the moon with it, man! They will be in a blissful trance by that groove and jimmy's soul-caressing guitars. I used to be bored by it, back in my idiot, impatient days. the I actually began LISTENING to it, and now recognize it for the brilliant favorite of mine that it is!

Not really. It’s good cause it’s Zeppelin but it doesn’t compare to their other albums.
It’s one of my favorite Led Zeppelin albums. It’s different, so I can see how it’s not at the top of your list.

It sure was...I cried alot! My all time favorite band!
There is no Led Zeppelin without Bonzo.

This song is one of those songs that gets no recognition but is a top 5-10 Zeppelin song for me.

Thanks guys, as a Zep enthusiast you can get stuck on playing your favourites. So great to listen to all of these albums in the correct sequence again.
The finale song is probably gonna be your favorite fyi. Been waiting on that reaction since the journey started
