  • Bond, James Bond. Those three simple words are arguably the most famous in screen history, kicking off a franchise that’s lasted fifty-eight years, twenty five films and six actors in the lead and has grossed seven billion dollars to date and, arguably has shown more longevity than any other in screen history thanks to its ability to both reinvent itself for new generations and the fact that it never loses sight of what made it so popular in the first place.
So join us here at JoBlo as we look back at the history of the franchise starting with the one that started it all - Dr. No - starring a thirty-two year old Sean Connery in the role that made him one of the biggest icons of his era. And make sure to check back often as we count down all the Bond's leading up to the release of NO TIME TO DIE.

Underrated entry. Interesting thing about DN is that the "villain holds 007 captive in pampered luxury while revealing his plans" Bond movie cliche makes logical sense in the film: Dr No is trying to _recruit_ 007.

By today's standards you could say the movie is slow for the first half, no cgi or crazy action. I don't feel that way, I think they did a good job of introducing the James Bond character along with developing the story. Films were written and made much differently at that time.

Agreed, they are also my favorite versions of Bond. Dr. No has always been one of my favorites of the series. I think this analysis is somewhat superficial, based on what has come to be expected of James Bond movies after 5 decades. When you consider the low- budget, I think it's a fantastic first entry into the series. It started the engines for what was to come. I think it stands strong on merits of its own.

    • @anonb4632

For those interested, the film where Connery pulls off his hairpiece is from the underrated "The Man With The Deadly Lens" aka "Wrong Is Right" from 1982. Well worth a watch as it was pretty ahead of its time in regards of the role the media play with terrorism and geo-politics. It's a surprising satire that flopped at release.

Peter Burton was not related to Richard Burton. RIchard's real last name was Jenkins. Plus, a little harsh on calling Dr. NO a "B" movie?. For 1962, it was "Gold". This film set the table and made Sir Sean a Big Star. Goldfinger made him even bigger.

Dr. No returning would've been the greatest Bond movie to me (if done right), since Dr. No is honestly my favorite Bond villain. He feels like an antithesis to Bond in the way he acts and talk. While Bond quips his heart away, Dr. No just looks on with empty eyes and responds with something callous. While Bond smiles knowing he can save the day, Dr. No grins with malicious intent.
    Underappreciated Bond villain honestly.

I live going back to this now and then and just take it all in and see where it all started. In my opinion, Moore was good, but some of his films became too cartoonish and he got some awful jokes. Lazenby is wooden but his film is pretty good. Dalton is a good actor but his Bond doesn't work for me. Brosnan is uneven (and had some horrible jokes). Craig makes a good fist of it, but some of his film plots have been convoluted, dull or pretentious.

True thing with Moore having a cartoonist style to it. But also some of his movies are also most iconic for me. For Lazenby did one of my all-time favourites. Dalton's movies were pretty good imo. They all brought their own style to the character. Truth is I hated Daniel Craig in his debut. Only after Skyfall I could acknowledge him as a Bond. Don't know why though. I‘ve always really liked the conversation between Bond and Dr. No at the dinner table, I think it’s really well written and both opponents appear as equally matched in terms of charisma and intellect, in my opinion at least.
The way Dr. No tries to persuade Bond to switch sides while politely threatening him is something that’s been ripped off so many times over the decades, yet rarely has another film managed to replicate it in such smooth and elegant manner.
That includes all the other Bond movies, too.

Just a clever scheme by Spectre to get Bond to steal a decoding device for them and subsequently kill Bond and blacken M16's reputation. Had to have been wild for the ones who knew him personally, to look back on his life, as he verbally glossed over the memories of a bygone time, and shared the experiences of a life that only the likes of someone like "Christopher Lee" could probably contend with!! Dr. No and the entire James Bond franchise is officially 60 years old!!!
I think my dad was a teenager when it first started
At first the American representatives at United Artists had no faith the late Sean Connery could pull it off but the rest is history
He only did one Disney film featuring leprechauns
Quite the gamble bringing the first Ian Fleming novel to the screen
This forever changed the genre of action movies and gave us one of the most long lasting signature lines in cinema
The novel's already sold big in the UK
Turns out in the book the character of Bond is arguably somewhat underdeveloped, which is perfect for the reader to imagine themselves in the role
But for a film, James Bond had to become more defined, and crucially, relatable
Can't really write the books in todays climate considering all the machismo and omnipresent sexism plus smoking is a no-no considering the many health risks involved and not wearing seatbelts or having airbags
At the time Jamaica was already a British crown colony too
The movie rights to James Bond eventually were snatched up by producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli
The movie opened under the radar in the states at a drive in in Texas and Oklahoma but the reactions were ecstatic
Joseph Wiseman makes for a great first villain being the basis for all 25 films and Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder would set the standard for Bond girls to come redefining the femme fatale
I’m so grateful my late father was a fan because if not I wouldn’t be either
And this put Sean Connery on the map

Honestly, Sean carried this movie on his back. The murder of Professor Dent was Bond at his coldest, and while pretty much every other aspect of the movie is so silly and the effects are at their poorest, it had to begin somewhere, and Sean Connery was the perfect start.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong about Jack Lord as Felix Leiter. His character performance was so suave and calm compared to Sean Connery’s Bond serious and focused performance in this film, that Jack Lord actually inspired the Bond character to be suave & calm too in the series. A lot of fans don’t realize this though. I learned this myself watching “Being James Bond” Dr. No review on TH-cam.

Quarrel was an excellent character. We really need to get past this nonsense of looking at everything from 50+ years ago through the eyes of the year 2020

      @miss_conduct. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We wouldn't be looking at things from +50 years ago through the lens of 2020 if those things weren't still happening in 2020, my guy.
We need to look back at history and be critical, it's what's gonna make us grow and move forward.

    • @kalsolarUK
      @kalsolarUK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@miss_conduct. Nothing wrong with being critical, my guy. In fact, I agree. But we have to accept that the past happened. At the moment there's a constant push to delete the past and hide everything. If you do that, then what will be left to see, or read, or listen to in order to learn from? All that will happen is we'll end up making all the same mistakes again. Things have to be seen in context of their own time too.

Very good overview and review of Dr. No. You may have forgotten one point. It is the only Bond film to have nudity, not with any of the actresses, I've seen it umpteen times and notices on cable the nudity, not blotted out!, this is Quarrel's boat, in his boat on the walls there are topless photos of women!

I like Moore, but he did some awful Bond films. Live and Let Die is one of my favourites and View to a Kill great (despite his age), but then you have to weigh it up against Octopussy and Moonraker, which again have some great actors in them but have some truly horrific jokes and sequences in them.

"It's not a great film..." Let me stop your right there. It's easy to dismiss this film through an anachronistic lens and go for its faults, but apart from the fact that it is the very first James F-ing Bond movie, it's also just a really atmospeheric, well made, (by now) period spy thriller. It's Bond before it became BOND, before it became a formulaic franchise. Your quarrel with Quarrel is also a little forced. Yes, I'll admit, the "fetch my slippers" bit wrings a little, but if you know Bond as a character a little he could have easily said the same thing to some white flunky. Other than that there's something to be said for a mainstream "Hollywood" movie in 1961 to feature a black character that has his own agenda and agency. He is not simply the "servant" character you make him out to be.
Finally, the soundtrack is great, since it features locally sourced Jamaican music, just before Jamaica became a synonym for reggae/ska/rocksteady a few years later. It has early calypso and mento music in there, and tracks like "Twisting With James" are just great. It is too a great movie, just don't expect a "Bond" movie.
