I AM LATE TO THIS, BUT I COVERED THE ENTIRE THING OKAY - please like this video straight away, and also comment "BEANS" straight away too as i don't think this video will do well due to lateness :(
I pay a $100 deposit for my artist, and that $100 goes TOWARDS the price of the tattoo, and the sketch process is a part of that. During the first experience with my artist, she misunderstood and accidentally drew the wrong type of shark. She was really cool about it, and redrew the piece with the right kind. It was a great experience overall! Don’t let this woman ruin anyone’s choice to go to a female tattooer!
I was just coming here to say this... And to add on, yes, a deposit it normal and should go towards the final price. It's also used to secure and hold your tattoo appointment and almost always non-refundable because if you were to bail on the appointment they're not completely out for the time that could have been booked for someone who would show up and pay. The artist I go to most frequently charges 25% of the final price for the deposit.
A real tattoo artist wants people to be happy about their tattoos, to get what they want because it's permanent and represents the artist's skills and for clients to speak highly of their business. But this woman isn't a tattoo artist, she is a scammer that found something they can take advantage of. It's giving me contentfarms on youtube vibes but with tattoos lmfao. Ye they make the stuff and it's technically legal, but it's low quality and the only goal is money, art is not involved.
Same. My tattoo artist charges $100 deposit and it goes towards the tattoo. She charges about $140ish an hour. All consultations and sketching is free. That artist in this situation is an absolute joke, and I hope her shop sinks permanently. She’s absolutely just taking advantage of nice and unknowing people.
@@katiekaliber Well said! Real artists care about reputation and good word of mouth, that's the way they grow in popularity, unless, of course you charge people out the ass for a horrendous sketch that too will boost your "popularity" 😂
this!! i have a "collectors sleeve" with small pieces from multiple artists, i've only been working on it for about 6 months, and ive paid £230 so far - i expect to pay between 800-1200 as a lowball for the sleeve by the time it's done. £6000 could tattoo A LOT of my body, not a consult and a half sleeve!
I got my first (and only so far) tattoo done at a tattoo party lmfao it was $85. It's one color and not big. I know mine is on the cheaper side but $6k!?
Prices are definitely variable based on your area, but I don't think Courtney was from an area where this is an acceptable price. I live in an area where $6k is a pretty reasonable and standard price for a full sleeve, but that's the tattoo itself. Not the designs, not the consultation, and deposits would be factored into that 6k.
I mean, with my current artist, $6k Canadian will probably be the total cost for my eventual full sleeve. But that's custom original designs, many (MANY) hours of tattooing, and tips and pastries. I like bringing treats to my artist. And I'm very happy with the half-sleeve I have so far and consider the money well spent.
When I first saw the concept sketch the artist drew for her my first thought was “Bro I could have done a better drawing than that in MIDDLE SCHOOL.” And then when I found out it was traced off another artist I was like “Ahh that’s why.” 💀
@@unstoopableduo9897 right? Like there’s a certain level of tracing that I get, like when you’re up and coming in art and use others art or common characters in an art style you like, and trace it to learn the strokes and get your muscle memory going. But that’s only if you do that for practice, and to find your own style you like. Taking credit for things others did that you traced, nonetheless MONETIZING things you traced is absolutely deplorable. So many people that do this will say they were “inspired” by the other persons art, but inspiration is when you apply little techniques you like into your own art style. Not copying another’s entirely 💀
The First Lady being flown out to LA to get the fox tattoo the way she wanted absolutely for free is amazing. So at least there’s some sort of a happy ending
@@felixhenson9926 same... Totally the same. I definitely didn't think of Joe's wife though. That tattoo being as tacky as it was, I full on figured they HAD to be talking about Melania.
Definitely. The fact that the woman kept paying her is ludicrous, too. I'm not really a victim blaming type but she should have known something was up when the artist kept giving her the runaround. It's kind of on her at this point for continuing to pay. As someone who's never even gotten a tattoo, I would have smelled scam from a mile away, especially having to pay for a "consultation".
The only time I had to pay for a consultation is for super busy tattoo artists, and that consultation fee is only for your spot to be saved and even then that money goes towards the tattoo you’re getting (if it’s a pretty good sized piece)
I feel horrible for the tattoo shops that got harassed for having a similar name to hers :// It's good to call this behavior out but TikTok always takes it way too far and hurts innocent people
You’d think people would make DAMN SURE it was the right shop before blasting them, but humanity doesn’t even surprise me anymore, unfortunately. 🤦🏼♀️
All the "gates" go back to the Nixon scandal that was set off by a break in at the Watergate hotel. Putting "gate" at the end became shorthand for, "This is a juicy scandal/controversy."
@@tenthwave5834 Other way around, the "gate" didn't signify scandal until _after_ the break-in at the Watergate Hotel and the surrounding scandal. When discussing it, people ended up just shortening the situation to "Watergate." Watergate then became used to describe the scandal as a whole and not just the hotel/location.
I was shown this artist’s Google reviews. She is REALLY nasty to people who leave negative reviews. I’m not surprised she went viral, because she is beyond unprofessional and in my opinion, she has no business owning a business. (To be clear: I don’t condone harassing her or her business. @@allen6187 In my experience, complacency and "taking the high road" when being mistreated only emboldens the offending party to continue doing their horrible deeds.
As an artist, a sketch like the one Lindsay produced would only take 5 minutes. To produce an actually dynamic pose that is to the specifications, it would take me maybe 15-20 minutes including proper linework (experimenting with line weight and such as well, and making the piece more polished than just a sketch) My hourly rate is like $18, I wouldn't even bother charging lmao
God yeah, I've gotten more detail into one-minute gestures than is present in that sketch. $1500 is insane for something like that. I would not be the least bit surprised if part of the reason for the pricing is that the fox sketch shown legitimately took ages to do. The wonky anatomy and large gaps in the linework make it pretty clear that there was no basic construction used to build out the shape of the fox before those lines were put down, so Lindsay was almost definitely an amateur artist that absolutely should not have been advertising professional work. The money lost still sucks, but Courtney definitely dodged a bullet there by not letting that artist put ink on her body. Probably would've wound up with a permanent tattoo looking like that one photo of a poorly taxidermied fox sitting in a chair, and coverups or laser removal for a fully colored half-sleeve wouldn't be much help.
As an artist, I sketch SUPER fast and people are always baffled at how fast I can produce a good sketch. I would compare that to scribbles. If you asked me to take 5 minutes to sketch a fox I'd have it done in 3. This is straight up chicken scratch
Her saying the fox WAS in motion made me laugh. I'm a comic artist, so I've spent a lot of time studying and drawing motion. That fox looks like it's standing, maaaaybe prancing. In no way is it running.
I feel so grateful for my tattoo artist. He doesn't charge a dime for consultations, sketches, booking appointments, or making changes to the tattoo itself. He also only starts the clock when the ink hits the skin, and pauses it for bathroom breaks etc. His art is fantastic and he is such an honest and genuine person. Love you Jay!
My artist did the same. He didn't charge for the consult but I did have to put down some money when I made my ink appointment that went towards the final price (assurance that I will come). He started the clock once he had everything ready and was ready to ink and paused the clock when I took a bathroom break. I got a sternum tattoo there and the artist that did that one wanted to stop the clock every time I needed a breather. She would ask every time should I stop the clock, the tattoo was a small one so I had her keep the clock going the whole time because I had saved enough to tip a lot that time.
Same here the artist I went to charged 60 and hour but because he is an old family friend it was slightly discounted for the 2 tattoos I got this year. I was so grateful for what he did for me I only git a grim reaper and plauge doctor tattoo so not crazy exciting idea but for what I wanted it for and first time he was super chill dude for a small town artist 😊
The most I’ve had with one was a small booking fee, which went into the tattoo price when I got there, but that was due to multiple customers cancelling very last minute and she had limited time available due to having a child with disabilities. Which I had zero issue with
I’ve done tattoo consultations literally over instagram DMs with my current artist and literally they have always got it spot on. So, considering the artist had literally half an hour of face-to-face talking, with detailed reference pictures too, I can only imagine (rather cynically) that the artist deliberately fucked up the initial sketch to get more money out of the client. Very shady business practices and it’s honestly shameful.
@Lizard Breath 💯 same. So glad I have a kickass artist I love and can trust. I took MONTHS researching before deciding on a place. I feel like more people should do that. It's like buying a car, but way more permanent and should be taken just as seriously imo
"You didn't tell me that's what you wanted. That's not my fault." I don't even think she looked at the photos. Cause, I think even an elementary-school aged child could tell you that this person wanted a tattoo with a fox running through flowers.
I'm a regular artist and I have been working on this one piece for MONTHS. It's acrylic on canvas with sculptural elements. The sculptures are of flowers. I have these bases made of tissue paper, wetted and hardened so they're super solid, and I have watercoloured and added each petal manually. I'm nearly half way done the flowers. I decided with how much work has been involved (I have to hold each flower to the base for at least 5 minutes EACH to get them to stick too... they're hydrangea so there are at least 20 flowers per base and each flower has 4 petals, each petal was individually hand painted with watercolour paint... lightfast, high end watercolour paint at that. And that's just the junder layer of flowers. The overlayer is painted with pearlescent watercolour paint, and each of the pearlescent flowers has not one, but FOUR glass beads in the middle to make up the little flowers in the middle of each. The painting is about 9'x11' but the sheer amount of work I have done on this thing is nuts. And that's not even including the literal subject of the (acrylic) painting itself! I decided last time I was working on it that I would be charging $500 for it. It is the most expensive painting I have created and I almost felt bad about the price but then I went to glue a flower and realized I needed to make at least 30 more than I had already. - 5 mediums - 4 seperate skills (at this level gluing and cutting are absolutely a skill lol) - 8 months worth of hours (the prelim sketch was an inktober challenge) - many trips to various stores - using up precious toilet paper (clean guys, clean unused, not even opened near the bathroom toilet paper) - canvases aren't cheap... - AND I should get $500 alone just to figure out how to ship the damn thing lol. - not to mention the nearly *THIRTY* _years_ of developing my skills to the level they are *AND I'M STILL ONLY CHARGING A FRACTION OF THIS WOMAN'S SKETCH!*
@@konbini2004 lol I hear ya. Just because I'm pricing it at $500, doesn't mean I'll sell it... which is sad because people are out there spending literal THOUSANDS on literally nothing.
@@konbini2004 I should add, I've only ever sold a couple of paintings... to friends and family lol. I just meant by this that I wouldn't even dream of charging even a fraction of the price of this sketch and for a mixed media piece.

The “gate” became a thing from the Watergate scandal (70s US politics) plus the Whitewater controversy (90s US politics). Not sure where it came from but the latter started being referred to as “Whitewater-gate,” which led to -gate becoming a suffix to refer to a scandal, generally over someone playing dirty.
I know about it and I'm Australian. Channel owner is just about media concepts and fast ideas. I've heard him berate a COMEDIAN for making fun of Dylan Mulvaney. Are women not allowed to make fun of him now?
@@acario100 sort of. Watergate popularized it because it was already its own ironic pun. "watergate-gate" or just watergate. Gating in its own definition is to control a scandal or conversation which long predates watergate. But ionno 'watergate-gate' sounds weird. so Water "Gate" just has a better catch when you know that Gate has that other definition.
@@dragames Quick question, did you make all that up to screw with people? Or did you just think 'this kinda makes sense so it must be the truth?' If it's the former that's kinda funny I guess but if it's the latter thats an incredibly dangerous way of thinking my man. In 1972 the Watergate scandal shocked the world and captured international news for months. In fact the Watergate hotel became so synonymous with far reaching scandal people started affixing -gate at the end as a libfix to denote a major scandal of some kind.
My first tattoo was overpriced. She said it would be $250, but the $50 appointment booking fee would go into the price. Now, you'd think that would mean I'd pay $200 day of. But no, she charged me $250 the day of after she canceled my appointment and rescheduled multiple times AND I needed to pay tip. I was 18 and didn't know better, but I am disappointed in myself for not standing up to that misinformation
I've known a few tattoo artists do this kind of thing with people who are having their first tattoo done since they seem to think that because it's your first you might think it's normal and pay without asking questions etc.
My first tattoo I was told would be paid for by my partner at the time, and that he ran his own shop. He spent 3 hours doing my tattoo, which looked decent except some lines were thicker than others. Afterwards, I asked what hos shop was called, and he told me he was an apprentice with 15 hours under his belt. I wad so angry at my S.O. for lying to me, but it looks decent enough. It sucks that was your first experience 😕
Artists are the irl equivalent to the influencers of the internet world. They are just lazy entitled assholes that think they are better than everyone just for existing.
If you didn't know why better then why are u disappointed in yourself? You shouldn't feel any negative way about yourself, if anything be disappointed in the artist because they took advantage of you due to your age and inexperience
Most artists include the tip in the end price so the shop minimum 50$ whatever plus say a 150$ tattoo is really a 80 dollar tattoo 20 tip lol if theres little to no shading all lines no detail it shouldnt be much tip more if you feel they deserve more
Note: Police officers are not lawyers. If you want to know if something is actually legal/illegal like this, talk to a lawyer. There is a good chance someone like this would not fair well when actually brought to court, especially when it's shown she traced, etc. I'm also not a lawyer, but it's important to remember that just because a police officer said it's so doesn't mean it's so. Even if it's well-meaning, this isn't really their field and they probably just want to shoo everyone away and not deal with what is probably a nonsense situation to them.
I am only studying law but she likely has a legal case, at least in the uk. you are correct, it would not be criminal so police should not be involved. it is deceptive practices, the extra fees being added are unreasonable and all options are not communicated. it would fully land in the consumer protection act.
The issue is it isn't considered illegal in the criminal sense, so the police can't really do anything to the tattoo artist. Not paying for a service is illegal, and that's the only reason the cops got involved in the first place. However, the second woman mentioned in the video may have a chance in civil court, since the tattoo artist did not provide the service promised. It also all depends on the state they're in. Each state has different laws, so this might really only be applicable to my state.
Except when Matt gaetz got accused of being a human trafficker (and didn't face the consequences of something I think he pretty obviously did, but that's neither here nor there) and it's was called "gaetzgate". That one was ok, albeit his idea.
I feel like one of the most important parts in the second girls story was that when homegirl had tatted her for 2hrs and left to get her kids, she charged her some insane amount ($1900?) for her “daily rate” even tho she’d made the girl sit around for most of the day. Then the girl said she was quoted $1700 for the whole tat and that’s why she paid the 50% $850 deposit, and the artist said nope, $850 is just my deposit rate.. And so that’s why the next day the girl said she wasn’t paying yet ANOTHER daily rate for a couple hours of work. That shit HAS to be illegal. Agreeing to one rate and then demanding over double that rate after the work has been done? I get the cops can’t do anything bc it’s not in writing but that practice has to be illegal…
This is what confused me. What stops anyone from telling me their services are 10 dollars, then turn around and demand 100 or 1000 dollars? The police should have said this is a civil matter and needs to be settled in civil court. Maybe someone else can explain what happened here.
Agreed, cops can’t arrest her for not paying this- it is a civil matter. If the scam “artist” wants to take her to small claims court that’s her prerogative but the victim has a stronger case against her imo
That's why people add "subject to change" in a consultation/estimate. Most people it's honestly if something unforseen happens and you have to charge a little more. But there are people who are gonna run a grift and up the price at the perfect moment. When you're almost done but need them to finish the job. If that's in the initial terms it's gonna be hard to fight it. I wouldn't pay and go to someone else, personally. But I get why people just pay.
I used to be a floor manager of a high end/quality tattoo shop and we did charge a design fee for big pieces or a deposit for small things, but that was to make sure that the artist didnt waste their time and the client was actually going to show up, but it was deducted from the tattoo price after completion. That sketch was absolutely horrid in terms of design, anatomy and quality and didnt consider the clients wishes at all. Also, tracing is considered a mortal sin with respectable artists and that dragon tattoo? That was her work ?!? That tattoo quality wasnt even worth her " consultation and design fee" in terms of quality . Im glad people like this are being called out.
@@PanthereaLeonis yeah same, I've had apprentices in the shop that did a way better job. I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubts in terms of quality/price at first. my artists were more expensive than most, but all had a very refined and unique style, amazing linecontrol and colourwork and really just made art, so I definitely feel great artists should be compensated fairly, but that traced mess? Dear god, what a scam
I'm an artist and I have done work for tattoo parlors and people wanting to get tattoos done If I got paid $1000 for my art, hot damn. I usually charge only $20 for small $50 for large pieces and they're nowhere near the garbage that was.
the consultation fee was crazy to me but at least she saw that on the website. the sketch/design fee was RIDICULOUS. not bc it’s ridiculous to get paid for your drawings but 1.5-6k for a SKETCH(S)?
For real! So many artists of a much higher skill level could make a fantastic tattoo design for like, 40$! Which is way way on the low end for what art like that is worth but you know. Just to put into perspective how delusional this Lindsey person is
RIGHT like I'm an artist, I also will design tattoos, and my commission rate is $25 per hour- I don't charge for making corrections to a design, and at the end you get all of the sketches, including a final FULLY COLORED illustration- I cannot imagine charging someone 6k for a couple of SKETCHES???
Artists that make a living on art commissions don't charge that much for fully rendered fullbody drawings. Tattoo artists don't charge anywhere near that for a sketch of a half sleeve.
Just a reminder that the majority of people who get tattoos don't regret them. And if they do regret any, it's usually like one or two and they just get it covered up or if they really regret it get it removed.
Got My first tat about 4 years ago now. It's my only tat atm. It's a lily. And I still love it talking to the same tattoo artist about getting a penguin tat
the only people i know who regret their tattoos are ones who got tattoos related to SOs or people they were "in love" with at the time of getting the tattoo. Now they are broken up or moved on from that person and I hear them talking about coverups. Which is why I won't get a tattoo related to someone I love unless they 've passed on already.
Yeeee.... from my understanding most ppl who regret it got the tat on impulse, but if you planned and had a full consultation and such it seems waaaaayyyy less common
The fact the tat artist is trying to CONVINCE her to get a tattoo that she said she DOESNT WANT theres nothing you can do at that point ! You have to redraw! This is so frustrating
My artist gets positively giddy with excitement when we discuss design ideas. The fact that she is just as hyped about it as I am is why I trust her so much
Same with mine! Right now we're discussing an anime leg sleeve with all my friends favorite characters and a bunch of Pokemon peeking out between all them cause I love it all so much. My artist is super excited to know which anime characters she gets to tattoo
This whole situation is insane for me. I had a tattoo done recently, the consult was free, I designed my tattoo myself, but the tattoo artist made it better since I'm no artist myself. The "redesign" of the tattoo was also FREE, which shocked me. The artist said he charges 100$/hour. I sat there for 7 hours and only paid 550$. I love my tattoo and am totally shocked at how cheap it turned out to be despite the tattoo artist being a pro and winning multiple awards in 2022. Hearing about this story and how this poor woman was scammed is unbelievable.
You don't get it? People are greedy animals by nature if there's an opportunity to do something for their own gain someone's gonna do it. Basically law of the strongest
I can’t believe this is how big this has gotten. I worked with her for years at a tattoo shop called stigmata and I have one tattoo by her. She price gouged back in the day too
The prices are insane. My husband has both arms fully done wrists to shoulder blades and he paid 2000$ TOTAL. Also the deposit usually goes towards your tattoo as long as you show up.
Exactly! As someone with smaller tattoos, my experience is a little different. But I have friends that have full sleeves and didn’t even pay that much for their total art. And these were elaborate tattoos, easily worth a lot of money. This tattoo artist she talked to was really trying to scam people who didn’t understand the industry.
Price depends on the area you live in and the experience of the artist. 6k would be reasonable for a full sleeve (just the tattoo, designs and consults would be free and deposit would be counted into the price), where I live.
My most recent tattoo was extremely overpriced. I wanted something to remember my mother who passed away on my birthday. I contacted a reliable-looking shop to make me a tattoo; the tattoo itself is a bit bigger than a quarter and I payed $450 after getting it, not including the $250 booking price… the tattoo itself is not the best. He was supposed to be good at fine lines, but instead gave me squiggly lines. He also didn’t design it as I had asked, he just copied what I drew and said that is what I was gonna get. I was just too scared to speak up and was taken advantage of. So I understand how she must feel :/
If it’s fine line, maybe look into getting laser and starting over with an honest and talented artist. You as the paying client deserves so much better than that. Sorry for what you went thru and prayers to you for your loss 🙏🏽❤️. I’m sure your mother feels nothing but aloha for you honoring her.
My dad has been a tattoo artist for 16 years now, tattoo shops were basically my second home since I was 6, and I have never heard of being charged any sort of tax. You’re getting a service, not paying for a good, so the whole situation is super sketchy especially that part for me
This took place in Ontario, Canada where tattoos are taxed. That was the only charge that made sense to me lol I got my first tattoo a few weeks ago and didn't have to pay any sort of design fee, consultation fee, or deposit but I did have to pay tax.
@@tessmary1831 yeah, we tax goods AND services. It's the name of the tax. Or was? Deposits are fairly common for artists who have more client potential than hours in a day, or complex/large pieces requiring more than one appointment... Usually comes with a signed agreement with an addendum that you will be reimbursed if the total tattoo time wage is lower than the deposit, probably something about losing right to reimbursement following getting fixed or finished from another artist. Pls tip. A good tattoo artist isn't embarrassed to state the outright cost of their labour, what is a shop/travel fee, and the cost of their supplies... And if they believe they need a cancellation/temporary exclusivity policy... Up front and before being asked about it.
@@yvonnesun2311 that's the problem, lol. The way the provinces and federal government work together on taxes makes it confusing. I'm *pretty sure* (but not a tax professional) that the GST (goods and sales) is for Canada, and then we had PST (provincial something tax) for our provinces (alongside other kinds of taxes). I think HST, Harmonized Sales Tax, is the calculation of adding (or harmonizing if you're fancy) the federal tax to whatever each province has for tax to make purchases less confusing and avoid this conversation all together. Take that Harper. Regardless, unless the service is saving your life, or the goods support life, you're paying taxes on everything in Canada.
I paid $200 for my booking and sketch, but it went to the cost of my (biggest) tattoo a few months ago. I understand this charge early because the artist is using their time and skill to make art for a client who may never come back.
Came to say exactly this! If you're booking something big like a back piece or a sleeve, lots of artists will charge a consultation/sketching fee because the sketch will take a lot of time & effort - so they're just making sure they're compensated for that even if you change your mind & don't get the tattoo. I'd say £80/$100 feels reasonable for a big intricate piece - but it ALWAYS comes off the final cost of the tattoo! Also, no artist worth their salt would charge you for changes (within reason obvs).
When my wife got her tattoo, the artist set the fee and took a deposit that could be claimed back if you changed your mind and he refused to take anything else unless you were happy with the work. His opinion was that you have it on your body for the rest of your life so if you're not 100% happy, he would refuse to do it. Lindsey deserves everything she got.
I got my first tattoo in 2018 from an artist from South Korea who was travelling to Australia as a guest tattooist at a studio. We collabed over email in the months leading up to his arrival. Even though I don't speak Korean and he had limited English, we were able to bring my vision to life through google translate and lots of concept images. He didn't charge me for a consultation or design fee, only a deposite fee and then the rest would be paid for after the tattoo was done. It ended up being around $1800 AUD for it, with the tattooing taking place over two 6hr sessions. Also, the tattoo was a back tattoo from nape to butt. He ended up asking if I was a design major in University with how thorough I was in my explanation to him about style, position, shapes etc... it was a fantastic experience.
I have multiple large tattoos and have a friend that has a full back tattoo and neither of us paid close to what this greedy POS was demanding. Also I sat down with my tattoo artist after providing them with reference material and talked through the design as they were sketching and guess what? It cost me nothing beyond the cost of my tattoos!
I'm an art student and I was commissioned to do a tattoo sketch once. For half a sleeve, I charged 68$ for the whole quite detailed piece including all the adjustments and changes, and there was a lot of them. I can't imagine someone being so shitty to charge such a ridiculous amount.
I recently found your channel (from the Colleen videos) and I’ve watched many hours since that, and I have to say I LOVE that you read off messages that are shared between parties (or in this case emails) and don’t just say “pause if you want to read.” I put videos on like this while I’m doing chores or other things, so the fact that you don’t take the route that many others take makes it easier for me to follow along even if I’m not constantly watching the screen!
I'm sorry $6,000! She could have gotten a full colored back tattoo of a fox for that price. I have currently three tattoos & am working towards getting my 4th & 5th. My biggest piece cost me $550 & that was for a full colored shoulder piece that took a little over 5 hours to get done. I had full control on how the design looked as well as the colors being used. I've had to do like booking fees (usually not over $20-50) but I've never heard of a consultation fee for a tattoo although I could see it for big named artists or some places that get a ton of clients ever day. There's were however two big flag though that stuck out to me: One was the different packages being offered. A tattoo artist will usually give a range or a rough amount for the price of the piece. For example they may say $200 for a piece but sometimes it make take a little longer so they may end up charging $250 for it just because it took like a half an hour longer to do the tattoo. The second big red flag was that the only way she was going to be able to change the design was to pay more. I have never seen an artist tell someone that they won't be able to change the design that will be permanent on their body unless they pay more. Yes it's that's artist work they're putting on the person's body but the person getting the tattoo is the one paying for it so they should be allowed to have input regarding something that is going to be on their body forever
When I had my half sleeve done, my artist had me pay a $75 deposit fee during my consult because he's had a lot of people just not show up and wasting his time. That $75 then went towards my first payment because I only had to pay for the work done during each session (I think I had 5, two for line work on the top of the arm/shoulder area then the under arm, then two for the color on the top of the arm/shoulder area, and one for any final touch ups after everything was healed up.) In total, I payed $1,000 for a full color half sleeve of a dragon that goes almost to my neck and about two inches above my elbow. I could not imagine paying that much money for something that I would not be happy with.
I commissioned a tattoo design from an artist I admire and received both a watermarked art piece and a pdf version of my tattoo (for the actual tattoo artist to use) for $85, which included my tip. It is insane to me that this person thought they could charge THOUSANDS for SKETCHES and then they didn't even do that right.
Shout out to the tattoo artist who is going to take up the job for free. Thank you. But tic toc needs to make Lindsey famous. Blow her scam up all over social media
Yeah, I was scammed out of 300 dollars when I was eighteen over my second tattoo. And then when I asked if I could have the money back since he wasn't gonna finish my tattoo after the outline, he said naw. A week later, he tried to hit me up on Snapchat to hook up at his place. I've since learned to be more careful with where I go for my tats.
Ngl they should take this to court because it is illegal to share your id without permission to social media without any censoring of your ID number, address, and info on the card sonce someone can actually steal it and make fake IDs with them. Even if theyre not getting the product they are asking and already spent loads of money, they can sue them out for that. Also artist theft is a huge HUGE plagiarism. So easy court case for everyone
I won a $200 gift certificate for a tattoo. I gave it as a present which was an option. They went to book their tattoo and they said they need the $200 for a downpayment and reservation but it won't go towards the tattoo. Then they said it would be another $600 for a small tattoo. I was shocked and disgusted
I am a tattoo artist and this is what I take from this. I think this whole situation is garbage and don’t know how someone can take advantage of a nice enough person who would pay this much money for your work, and her design is all traced and stiff and if you have to trace to make your tattoos you should go back to being an apprentice and take some college art classes. Buttt I do agree with getting charged a deposit that goes toward your tattoo. I’ve had people run off with my designs and had their cousin in a basement copy it, or they no call no show me and I’ve wasted my time when I could’ve been making money but instead I’m doing free labor. But usually it’s only 50-100 bucks for most artists. I couldn’t imagine charging over that
I’ve never charged more than $100 for a deposit and it always goes toward the price of the tattoo . Some ppl clearly don’t do any research before they put something permanent on their body …. It’s insane
I've recently (this year) got a tattoo from a pretty famous (4 year waiting list) artist: my consultation cost nothing; the design cost nothing; the deposit was £150 (which was taken off my last session cost); I need 2x day long sessions (1x eight hours long, and the other 6 hours) - my total cost was £900!
Around my area almost all the reputable tattoo shops has paid consultations that doubles as the design fee. I think it's because if they don't charge they could spend all day talking to hundreds of people that would just back out and end up making no money. People that pay for a consultation/design are probably less likely to be a waist of time for the artist and if they are they haven't waisted the time working for free.
That’s how my artist did it. It was a college town so I get it. Kids wander in and then don’t return and the artist has spent time drawing what they wanted. I drew my own design, so they cut the consult in half for me and the rest of the consult fee was counted towards the design. Day of, he printed it on temp tattoo paper so I could double check position and style. We made a minor tweak to the design, checked it again, and moved ahead!
This is literally just what the deposit is that gets paid before they actually start drawing your design. The problem here is that it was never going to be taken off the final price left to pay
As a tattoo apprentice, that lady definitely got horribly scammed. The deposit for my tattoo shop its just 100 because (from my opinion) a deposit its just something to make sure the customer actually comes in and you didn’t just waste your time as an artist. Charging 1000 for a deposit its just, fucking insane. And I honestly do understand charging for a consultation or a sketch because (again) that customers could take it to someone else, but i would not charge more than 20 maybe for a consultation and more than 50 for drawing (i honestly wouldn’t charge at all, you just gotta be careful with your art and make it so its tilted/discolored enough for someone not to steal the good version)
Fun fact! The "gate" at the end of scandle names comes from the WaterGate scandle where a US president was caught bugging the Watergate hotel where a political rival was staying.
If she traced her art, that's the main reason she only allowed minor edits, FOR SURE. I don't have any tattoos, and bc I live in a country where it wouldn't make much sense to get one (I love onsen more than I love any tattoo idea I've had so far) if I WERE to book one, I wouldn't know that paying these exorbitant fees was out of the ordinary. She absolutely would be preying on people like me.
I can understand paying for a design if you are getting a design from an artist who will not be tattooing the work themselves. I've seen artists "sell" designs out of their book in this way, and I intend to pay for a design myself in the future as it is a particular indigenous style that will be designed around my family background, lineage, and will be designed by someone who has extensive research into it. What she did was completely ridiculous and preyed on sunk cost fallacy and also probably that she knew that she could trick enough people who are uneasy with confrontation.
I do art for a living and I sometimes feel bad for charging $50 for very complex pieces. I cannot imagine charging $6000 for a concept Edit: I'm not saying charging $50 is a lot. I just struggle with imposter syndrome when it comes to the value and skill in my art
When I saw that sketch and that she paid $1500 for it... like my soul actually left my body. It really upsets me when I see illustrators in particular constantly undervaluing their work, and absolute scammers like this thriving. I work on commission too and I would go to the ends of the freakin earth to satisfy someone who was paying me $1500 😭
I am also an artist and it's difficult balancing what your art is worth vs what you ask to be paid. I always look at it in terms of how many hours I will be working on something, as well as their purpose for having the piece. I usually price my time at approx $50/hr, give or take. I would look up standardized artist fees in your country (in Canada we use CARFAC fees) to give yourself an idea of the industry standard 😊
I did a brochure for $20 on fiverr, which in retrospect took me a week of work (and got my unemployment insurance, which I was getting because it was 2020, docked by 80 bucks for working so many hours, so essentially I took a 60 dollar penalty for it!). I do think I should've charged $200 in retrospect, but it was a small startup for CBD coffee by a veteran, so I sorta just thought of it as a portfolio piece. The 60 buck loss, well, that just hurt.
@@_lil_lil I've taken the financial hit before too, generally for friends or people who are down on their luck. Sometimes it's easy to do what you love for someone for essentially free until you look at your bank account later and feel a bit used 🥲
I feel like a lot of artists have this problem. My friend also makes art for our DnD campaigns from time to time and they think they're not doing great but we all love it so much! I'm entering the workforce and still plan on using my first genuine paycheck to commission something from them, just because I appreciate what they do so much. I wish I could take just half of this scammers audacity and give it to them tbh. They would deserve the confidence so much more.
legit can't imagine being financially violated like this, the £50 deposit for my neck tattoo wasn't deducted from the overall price when done and im still not completely over it lmao
Honestly got charged £80 for a tattoo that took less than half an hour. Only to find another artist who did a 3 HOUR tattoo for 150 with such a gorgeous design. Still salty about my first tat don't get me wrong I love it. But its genuinely just a filled in trident on my neck.
I love how thorough you are when you discuss your videos. I love that I don’t have to deep dive into other videos because you’ve already provided all the information
As someone with multiple tattoos i have never heard of this process, i've always gotten a free consultation and most tattoos i've designed so the artists would redesign or touch up the drawing for FREE and then pay for the end result i couldn't image being in this situation
A tip for art buyers: This is a rare horror story, but it's fair to compare prices with other artists, especially if you're unfamiliar with the industry!
I'm only 6 minutes in and just want to point out that it's common practice to pay some kind of fee for a tattoo artist to sketch out your idea since it can take up a lot of their time especially if it's a super custom piece you're looking for. That being said whenever I've had to pay it's been a very small amount and that fee gets deducted from the overall cost of the tattoo. However, a consultation fee is a bit odd and not something I've ever encountered and I'm quite heavily tattooed.
The only thing I can think is that people assume they are paying for quality. When you're getting art literally permanently put onto your skin, I'd sure as hell want the reassurance that they were actually good, and generally the price they charge is a good indicator of that (especially since artists tend to undervalue their work, rather than overvalue it). When you consider that she initially also thought that price was towards the overall cost of the tattoo, and not just the sketch, I think it becomes a little more reasonable. Still perhaps a bit pricey, but perhaps more reasonable for a very skilled artist doing a larger tattoo
Right? Do these people do no research beforehand? Like, at all? Do they not ask other people what they paid or look into general tattoo prices before dropping massive amounts of money? It’s idiocy.
That's what I think too. I wouldn't charge for a commission without comparing prices, and I would certainly not ink something onto my skin for the rest of my life without quadruple checking.
yesterday i had a tattoo done and when we finished she told me the total and seemed to...not flinch back, but sort of tense up? and i thought that was weird bc yeah sure it was pricey but she did a great job, its not a small tattoo, and she worked really hard on it. and i wonder now if she was worried this whole viral experience would make ppl retaliate over prices, like damn....hope this blows over fast so tattoo artists dont need to feel defensive over their reasonable and fair prices bc of this one bad egg
I want to get tattoos and fully expect to be paying thousands. 🤷♀But I also want to get both of my shins and calfs done and need to find an artist that tattoos over scars, so I assume that both the size of the area I want covered and those scars will play a part in that cost.
I mean it shouldn’t be a discussion after the completion of the tattoo you should know what their hourly rate is going in , if she charges $ 100 an hour for a certain size tat and it took 3 hours then you owe $300 less if you include the drawing time . Even scars should be discussed at the beginning and you should be given notice of any hiccups it may cause .
Thanks for covering this! You’re my only source for TikTok drama, so, late or not, I’m always here for it! - I feel so bad for this woman. What a terrible experience she’s had to go through! And she handled it so much better than I would have - we’d be in civil court after the refusal for refund - especially with the plagiarism. I really hope Linsey got reported to the BBB and consumer protection.
I was considering choosing this shop for my first tattoo. They are close to my home (they’re in Cambridge Ontario) and I like this style of work. Having to pay this amount of money and being scammed like this would’ve ruined my chances of paying for university. Paying half of my yearly income for a tattoo is insane
Omg, that's where the tattoo artist is?? That's where my grandparents live, I've probably seen the storefront and never even knew 😱 Such a small, small world sometimes.
Lmao I’ve been to lucid tattoos and I was tattooed by her apprentice, they specifically said they had a free touch up policy within a year and after 3 months I asked for my touch up and they said I needed to pay the shop minimum per hour….. like WHAT
For reference on pricing: I got two paw prints with my dogs’ names under them. It was a $100 for a down payment. Then the tattoo took a little over an hour and she changed me for an hour. Then it cost $200 with tax and tip
I was sitting here like "Well, making a good sketch can be work, and the artists should be paid for that work. How much could a sketch cost, 10 dollars? 20? They are saying it was insanely expensive, maybe like $100?" I think hearing the actual price killed me, and my funeral is going to be cheaper than that sketch of like 1/4th of a fox.
I have tattoo artists for friends. Never once have they mentioned "consult fees," "design fees," and "difference between concept design fees." I've only been charged for the actual tattoo itself when I got tattoos. This was clearly a scam for profit.
AINT NO WAY I WATCHED THIS VIDEO WHEN IT WAS FIRST POSTED I WAS JUST... BINGING... btw my mother has a bachelor's degree in traditional art (she's 64- im introducing her to digital art, wish me luck!) and she was, and is still LAUGHING HER ASS OFF at the absurdity of that fox and your amzaing jokes and commentary. Amazing video.
The shittiest thing I've experienced with a tattoo artist is that they made me sign an NDA where I'm not allowed to bad mouth the experience or the artist but I can leave a positive review. It's been 10 years and the NDA ended so heed my words: if you want a good tattoo, find someone at work, friend, or see someone in public with tattoos that peak your interest and get a personal recommendation. Word of mouth is the best way to find the best & worst artists in your area.
Can i JUST SAY you are the one youtuber i can stand that ALSO does long form content. I watch every single minute. I cannot stand needing to stop what im doing every 8-12kins to find something tolerable while i do laundry and clean and I LOVE YOU FOR IT THANK YOU.
I only have one tattoo (so far) but my sister has about 20, and neither of us have ever heard of a consultation fee OR a design fee. Also a $1000 DEPOSIT for the tattoo is absurd -- I know it's a big piece but $1000 for a tattoo in general is quite a lot. And I can't imagine what the final cost would be if just the design and deposit cost that much. Wouldn't be surprised if the final piece ended up being like ten grand. Also Fraser be like I'm soooo sweaty but I'mma stay in this crewneck for the vibes
There is normally a deposit, but that is after you have had a 'consult' (which is normally just an email or in person chat with ideas, placement, reference photos, a discussion of dates and then stating what sort of cost it would be). My last tattoo was by an artist with 60k followers on Instagram (so not at all famous but quite an established artist) and my deposit was only £50 to cover the time and effort put into creating the piece if I was a no show.
I have six tattoos and my friend has...20 something? And neither of us have EVER been charged like this. For our artist at least, it's a free consultation, sketch is included with as many changes as either of us have ever requested (tbf our artist is excellent and has only ever needed one or two small tweaks per piece), and my entire upper back tattoo was about $3k - $3.6k. My ENTIRE 24-hour piece was HALF the SKETCH PRICE. Oh my GOD
I'm heavily tattooed by good artists and I've never encountered anything like this. Like... to clarify... she is charging $1500-$6000 JUST for those crappy iPad sketches right? That price isn't even inclusive of the tattoo itself? And that sketch is what she considered ready to transfer onto the body for tattooing 😳 Yikes.
This is disgusting... My bf owns a tattoo shop, has been an owner/artist since 1991. We charge NOTHING for a consultation, and we flat out REFUSE to do them anywhere but in-person. We charge nothing to draw the tattoo, or do re-works...EVER! We charge $50 to schedule an appointment, and this comes off the price of the tattoo and is reimbursable if you let us know at least 24 hours before your appointment. Our prices are HIGHLY competitive as well!!! We had someone come in last weekend who got tattooed at a nearby shop, paid $2200, we would have charged about $700 for the EXACT SAME tattoo in the same spot. We also do touch-ups for life. Yes, i said LIFE. So long as we are still in business, even if the artist who did your tattoo has left, you still get 100% free touch-ups!!! If anyone treats you with anything less than total respect or you even feel like it's a weird situation....RUN!!! Go to another shop and talk to them before you exchange ANY money!!! A consultation is like the artist selling themself and their work to you, if they demand money just to speak to them, leave em in the dust!!! Lastly I just want to say on behalf of myself, my boyfriend and our tattoo family.....we are sorry to anyone who this beast STOLE money from. Please don't allow this to ruin your outlook on the industry as a whole! Real artists, with real integrity are all disgusted with this woman and any other artists that try this or similar scammy practices!!! And we wish you nothing but luck in your inking or piercing future!!!! ❤
It took me 8 years to get my tattoo in memory of my brother - I'm a huge pansy when it comes to needles, but the older i got, the more i wanted my brother's memory engraved on me. I did SO MUCH research on artists prior to getting my tattoo - and i mean I went to several shops and went through a lot of books. I chose my artist because he had the best lettering of all the artists (my tattoo is latin). He was EXPENSIVE. Cost me $500, but my tattoo is PERFECT. The lettering is mint, the spacing is perfect- it's beautiful. Granted, most of my friends have tattoos and they gave me recommendations on artists, but, ultimately, it was up to me. That being said: ask people who HAVE tattoos on where to go!!! See someone with ink you like? ASK WHERE THEY GOT IT DONE. They will NEVER steer you wrong!!
I paid $80 for a small tattoo in 2019. Unfortunately, it’s kinda crap, but I’m okay with it for my first (and only so far) tattoo. Edit: it’s unfortunate that this happened, but it happens with many fields where they overcharge. I’m holding off until I have more money. Also, unless you have a small or easy design that they have to curate, there will be a small design fee, like you would give an artist for designing a tattoo not from the tattoo artist. But it’s never over $40
Honestly $80 is not much at all. Even if the tattoo is small it still requires a full set up with new needles, ink and ink cups, sanitary wrap etc. this is why shops have minimums and in scenarios like these it’s probably best to get multiple small tattoos in one session to get the most for your money
@@Granolabag it was my first tattoo done on a semi-whim (knew I wanted a tattoo, just never really planned a day) and a belated birthday gift to myself
I may not be a tattoo artist, but I am a full-time artist myself who does commission work. Client trust is a big thing for me when it comes to commissions. At the end of the day it's our clients who pay our bills and give us the opportunity to work on our craft as a full-time job. When it comes down to it, we will move onto the next job and if our work speaks for itself we will be blessed with the right opportunities at the right times, that being said our clients are the ones who will have to see / live with the fruits of our labor. When we move onto the next commission / job they will be left with something they paid for and want done a certain way, maybe instead of surcharges for designs and consultations she could put more effort into the final product and keep her as a future customer. I get that people don't want to work for free, but the least you can do is be more accommodating to your customers. That paves the way for the jobs that pay the most and more important consistent income. As an artist, I am ashamed that a client was treated in that way. I'm glad she's getting the tattoo but she deserves that refund. Just because it's legal, it doesn't make it right
As a heavily tattooed person, I have never been charged for a consult and the maximum my tattoo artist charges per tattoo design is in between £40-£60 and he has been a tattoo artist for 30 years. He says the reason he charges this is because some people will try to get free art out of him and this puts those people off but then when you book with him, he will take that £40 as a deposit so you aren’t actually losing money. If you take the drawing and book with another artist, at least he has been paid for his time. I think this is fair enough.
I paid 50$ for the sketch of the tattoo I was going to get. I told the artist everything I wanted regarding colors, details surrounding the main image, changes to the sketch that I brought in. I was very detailed. He said no problem and told me it would be 350$ for the tattoo. He emailed the sketch he made a few days later and it wasn't what we had discussed. In some aspects it was the complete opposite. So I told him it looked fine but I was expecting it to be more like what we had discussed. He wasn't happy about it but "reworked" it a bit. It looked basically the same. But I'm not very confrontational and I really wanted this tattoo. So I told him it was great and I couldn't wait to see it in color. He thought I wanted another sketch with full color. He got very annoyed and told me it would cost 300$ more. I explained that I meant the actual tattoo itself, not another sketch. That's when he told me the tattoo would cost 560$. At that point I said keep my 50$.
Okay but: if someone pays you over a 1k for a commission, the LEAST you can do is make sure that you don't misunderstand anything the client asks for. They've sent references, if you want to change something about that design you should first ask if that's okay unless the client already stated otherwise (for example with the flowers, she did say that was okay to change). I have taken more care with commissions that were for 5 euros for a family member😭
quite disturbing how this artist has gotten as well off as she has with her unethical practices. I personally am an artist who does commissions, some that have been used as reference for tattoos or even as tattoo designs, and I don't even let my commissioners pay for half until i finish the sketch. The fact that she makes people pay just for consultation actually boggles my mind into oblivion. She's actually crazy out of pocket for this.
I wish people talked about the rocknroll tattoo scandal in the uk last year… theirs scams, threats, hygiene problems, so much crap it’s insane and every day more shit was coming out.from the biggest studio chain in the uk…
Geez I was going to get a tattoo recently, but life keeps getting in the way. All that I was going to be charged before the appointment was a $100 booking fee, which is pretty standard for my area. The idea of paying $6000 for any tattoo that size is outrageous.
In case no ones said it yet, a little history lesson on why every scandal is called "Something-gate" Picture it, the beautiful Washington District of Columbia (D.C), 1972, the Vietnam war was drawing to a close in a few years (finally, everyone sighed patriotically), Godfather was premiering in theaters, the Olympics were hosted in Germany and apparently it was the debut at McDonalds of the Egg McMuffin and the invention of the delicious ice tea drink, Snapple, what a time it was. It was ALSO the time of the administration of President Richard Nixon, also nicknamed 'Tricky Dick', he was the republican candidate, was very well loved (and controversial) president at the time, apparently was responsible for the most desegregation of schools in the country at the time, which is pretty cool, and was applauded for pulling troops out of Vietnam (though i'm sure everyone has different thoughts on THAT) BUT one dark and stormy night on June 17th, (maybe it wasn't that stormy it was june....) there they were lurking in the dark, agents of chaos, thieves and swine, breaking and entering into Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington DC, Watergate Office Building. A burglary, all 5 of the perps were arrested and after a subsequent investigation by the DOJ, connected the cash to (dun dun dun) The Committee for the Re-Election of the President! CRP, or CREEP as it was often mocked. Very sus, the investigation and revelations found during the trials of the burglars all lead the House and Senate to create the 'U.S Senate Watergate Committee.' It was the biggest scandal in decades, a giant rabbit hole of wiretapping, money laundering, political sabotage, hearings from key members of the administration, probing into the white house, impeachment, some of the best pieces of investigative journalism in history and the kidnapping of Martha Mitchell (that story is insane all by itself) then all of the trials being aired LIVE on PBS, free entertainment, the American people felt as if they were all involved, everyone had an opinion about the scandal. Not only did it seem like yes, The Nixon administration was very much involved in the Watergate burglary, and then subsequently broke many laws to cover the whole thing up, but the man was also just a general asshole and didn't even like his own voters and beat the shit out of his dogs (literally why even have a dog, Dick?) He later resigned in light of the House commencing an impeachment process, officially for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and Contempt of Congress. He was the only president to have resigned from office and was later pardoned by his successor President Gerald Ford (nobody liked that.) So there you have it! Watergate is now synonymous with any scandal because it was the name of the building where the burglary took place, it was HUGE and was honestly just good fun to watch while it lasted. I fucking love everything to do with Watergate because its literally a conspiracy that turned out to be TRUE. also everyone should watch the movie Dick its the fucking best.
@@kendallsilver2607 You're very welcome! I love weird history like that, if you're not in high school yet they'll probably cover it around sophomore year, it was the funnest time we had in that class I swear cause we were all just clowning on Tricky Dick lmao
I remember offering to pay the artist I approached about designing a tattoo for me because I felt bad they were giving up so much of her time but never paid for a consultation, shame this has happened :(
$1500-$6000 for just a SKETCH? Damn, girl! My entire half sleeve was wayyy less than that, from a professional and talented esteemed artist at one of the best shops in Montana!
As someone who's done commissions with people who give such little information it's not even funny(they made me do my OWN research on how their character was supposed to look. they refused to explain it in detail), I would have LOVED to do a commission for Courtney. The information she provided was literally perfect and I've no idea how an artist could mess that up so bad.
Tattoo artists are like insurance companies. Get quotes from different places. Especially if it's your first one. Also, if you want one but think you can't handle the pain, apparently numbing cream exists??? I've never used it but I'd imagine it works lol. Now onto my personal experiences with permanent needle therapy: I have 7 tattoos so far, but I've never had an artist design one for me so I don't know if the shop I go to charges for that. If they do, I can guarantee it wouldn't cost anywhere near those prices. My most expensive tattoo was $280 (originally quoted to be $300 but it went a bit quicker than she expected). It takes up about half the underside of my forearm, is 5 colors, the stencil had so many lines that it made me dizzy, and that took about 2 hours to do. 6 of the tattoos I have are from the place she works at. My goal is to have art on me from everyone that works there lol. The 1 tattoo I got from a different shop is the only one I regret. I still like the design but the artist was new and it just...didn't go well haha. I'm loyal to the shop I got 6 from but they're not forcing me to be. The atmosphere there is chaotic in the best way, the shop is clean, and all the artists are good people. I'd name drop the place if I wasn't trying to keep some level of privacy online lol.
I've had about 12 tattoo sessions in my life, give or take, and I don't think I've cleared 3,000 total, INCLUDING tipping the artist. And they're respectable artists and well done tattoos. This is nuts
Babes it’s gate because of the Watergate scandal - because it was such a huge investigation/discovery. Makes sense though American history isn’t really relevant to rest of the world so you’re not alone in this
The answer to why people even agree to pay this is simple: sunk cost fallacy. Notice how she gets them to pay a fairly sibstantial, but seemingly reasonable fee at first, like the $180 consultation fee. That is a price you could agree to pay. At this point they don't know that additional fees are to come. After getting them to invest time and money she gives them a bit more, but charges a larger fee. This seems unfair, but you already invested so much... So you pay. And THEN the really unreasonable fees start. As they say "I could keep going, or I could just throw away ~$1000". At this point they feel like they've already invested so much time and money that they have to keep going to at least get a tattoo in the end. You see what the second lady says "I'm out $4000, but at least I got a tattoo". She hooks them with a substantial, but seemingly reasonable fee at first, and then increases it little by little until they reach the point where they don't want to deal with her, but if they pull out that's thousands of dollars for literally nothing. And that's without counting in how rude and pushy she is. Her behavior alone can scare someone from speaking up, which is exactly the point of it.
I do digital art commisions. 600 for a sketch? This is too insane, you can buy mutliple fullbody and colored pieces for this price, you can even get a decent vtuber model art. There are very few artist with great enough techniques and good reputations that I would be able to justify paying that price for a sketch
all of this stuff came out a few days before I was supposed to see my artists for TWO new tattoos, and it made me so happy to have her. i paid $400 TOTAL for two original, beautiful designs with unlimited tweaks and the most consideration ive ever felt with a tattoo artist. i have 10 tattoos now, and i can safely say that there is essentially absolutely no reason ever for an artist to charge that much for a tattoo like that. unless you're getting a full back piece, full sleeve, etc from an extremely booked/renown artist, you should be paying under $1,000 total. edit: also its only rly normal from what I know to pay money for a sketch if its a tattoo ticket. which is when you pay for a design from one artist and are given permission to have that artwork done on your body by a different tattoo artist. and even then its not a sketch its a full piece of art.

My sister is a fairly tattooed individual and has worked with both men and women, so far no complaints towards either gender.
As a moderately tattooed person, $6,000 is what I'd expect to pay to cover both legs and arms in tattoos. This is absolutely bonkers.
this!! i have a "collectors sleeve" with small pieces from multiple artists, i've only been working on it for about 6 months, and ive paid £230 so far - i expect to pay between 800-1200 as a lowball for the sleeve by the time it's done.
@@LoucheWoman Exactly, that sounds good for all that! Not for a stolen fox though
When I first saw the concept sketch the artist drew for her my first thought was “Bro I could have done a better drawing than that in MIDDLE SCHOOL.” And then when I found out it was traced off another artist I was like “Ahh that’s why.” 💀
Damnnn people are tracing again? Who knew /sar
Definitely. The fact that the woman kept paying her is ludicrous, too. I'm not really a victim blaming type but she should have known something was up when the artist kept giving her the runaround. As an artist, a sketch like the one Lindsay produced would only take 5 minutes.
To produce an actually dynamic pose that is to the specifications, it would take me maybe 15-20 minutes including proper linework (experimenting with line weight and such as well, and making the piece more polished than just a sketch)
My hourly rate is like $18, I wouldn't even bother charging lmao
The sketch looks like a mindless doodle
Her saying the fox WAS in motion made me laugh. I'm a comic artist, so I've spent a lot of time studying and drawing motion. That fox looks like it's standing, maaaaybe prancing. In no way is it running.
“The fox is in motion! He’s noclipping”
Drawing motion is hard lol hope your work’s going well 😊
I feel so grateful for my tattoo artist.
I've been fortunate to have tattoo artists like this too
Same here the artist I went to charged 60 and hour but because he is an old family friend it was slightly discounted for the 2 tattoos I got this year. I was so grateful for what he did for me I only git a grim reaper and plauge doctor tattoo so not crazy exciting idea but for what I wanted it for and first time he was super chill dude for a small town artist 😊
I thought that was how most tattooists work, at least the several different ones I’ve been too worked that way
The most I’ve had with one was a small booking fee, which went into the tattoo price when I got there, but that was due to multiple customers cancelling very last minute and she had limited time available due to having a child with disabilities.
From watching TreacleTatts video on this situation, I definitely got the vibe that the tattoo artist was acting deliberately.
Same. Every time I send my artist a message like, “how do you feel about this?” I show up on my appointment day to exactly what I want
LITERALLY
@Lizard Breath 💯 same. So glad I have a kickass artist I love and can trust. I took MONTHS researching before deciding on a place. I feel like more people should do that. It's like buying a car, but way more permanent and should be taken just as seriously imo
yeah, all my consults were over facebook messenger. lol
"You didn't tell me that's what you wanted. That's not my fault."
I don't even think she looked at the photos.
- 5 mediums
- 4 seperate skills (at this level gluing and cutting are absolutely a skill lol)
- 8 months worth of hours (the prelim sketch was an inktober challenge)
- many trips to various stores
- using up precious toilet paper (clean guys, clean unused, not even opened near the bathroom toilet paper)
- canvases aren't cheap...
- AND I should get $500 alone just to figure out how to ship the damn thing lol.
- not to mention the nearly *THIRTY* _years_ of developing my skills to the level they are
*AND I'M STILL ONLY CHARGING A FRACTION OF THIS WOMAN'S SKETCH!*

The scandal is called Watergate because it's the name of the hotel the scandal occured at. Gate is kept as a callback to the original scandal
Yeah, I was surprised he didn’t get this but then again maybe Watergate isn’t well known outside the US.

Police barely know the law, I’ve had a police officer tell us that shoving/hitting is not considered assault.
Tattoo artists have to have a license, each state has their own sets of regulations.
See also police can legally lie to you.

I really don’t understand why you’d even pay the increased price. I would absolutely refuse if it’s not what we agreed on.
Agreed, cops can’t arrest her for not paying this- it is a civil matter. If the scam “artist” wants to take her to small claims court that’s her prerogative but the victim has a stronger case against her imo
The victim has documentation and a paper trail and I'd sue her for all that. I'd soend the cash on a lawyer happily to let that 'artist' fafo
@Petâpan some provinces have the goods sales tax and the provincial service tax but I think some other provinces have the HST or whatever
The free tattoo offer at the end is the sweetest thing ever and I am so glad this had a happy ending
He ended up asking if I was a design major in University with how thorough I was in my explanation to him about style, position, shapes etc... it was a fantastic experience.
omg i need a pic now!!!
Oooh I have seen so many talented south korean tattoo artists! That sound amazing, happy that you were able to got it
First, Maddie scamming people about cancer. Now this. I am slowly losing faith in humanity.
Don't lose faith! Be the change that gives people hope and inspiration to do better!
Aka don't turn into a sht person
Focus on the tattoo artist who's flying her out for a free tattoo. He'll raise your faith back up.
@@GalacticPossum ok

First time, huh? Don't worry. It gets worse.
Uh she is being blown up, there’s a reason why this video is being made in the first place haha
Yeah, I was scammed out of 300 dollars when I was eighteen over my second tattoo. And then when I asked if I could have the money back since he wasn't gonna finish my tattoo after the outline, he said naw. A week later, he tried to hit me up on Snapchat to hook up at his place. I've since learned to be more careful with where I go for my tats.
i feel like this could have been an artist at a shop ive been to, but tbh this is probably a lot more common than id hope :(
i just finished greenisnotnick’s video on this topic and it’s still wild to me the bs the tattoo artist tried to pull with her 😭
Ngl they should take this to court because it is illegal to share your id without permission to social media without any censoring of your ID number, address, and info on the card sonce someone can actually steal it and make fake IDs with them.
That’s insane I’ve never charged more than $50 to $100 for a deposit and it always goes towards the price of the tattoo
@@Nizhonibearcreek yes! Where I go it is the same. When I was told what that tattoo shop is quoting, I was in SHOCK
Yeah my artist technically had a consult/design fee
But it was part of the overall payment at the end
About 360 usd with tip 😊
This is literally just what the deposit is that gets paid before they actually start drawing your design. The problem here is that it was never going to be taken off the final price left to pay
Makes perfect sense. Consult is free if you go ahead, but they still get paid if you back out so their time isn't wasted.
I cannot imagine charging $6000 for a concept
Edit: I'm not saying charging $50 is a lot.
They would deserve the confidence so much more.
legit can't imagine being financially violated like this, the £50 deposit for my neck tattoo wasn't deducted from the overall price when done and im still not completely over it lmao
for real i got overcharged like 150 dollars my first tattoo because i didn’t know how much it should be and idk if ill ever get over it
Honestly got charged £80 for a tattoo that took less than half an hour. Only to find another artist who did a 3 HOUR tattoo for 150 with such a gorgeous design. Still salty about my first tat don't get me wrong I love it. But its genuinely just a filled in trident on my neck.
@AJ tbf thats actually not a bad price, factoring in set up, design etc
@abigailmary170 it's such a gorgeous piece as well. 4 years and it's timeless. Was told if it ever starts to fade just come in and they'll touch it up
I love how thorough you are when you discuss your videos.
I do feel bad for the people scammed by her but why would anyone give an artist that much money up front? That’s insane to me.
That's what I'm saying
@@pennyforyourthots $6000, even for a really big colored tattoo, is absolutely insane. No one would ever charge that.

I feel so bad for this woman. What a terrible experience she’s had to go through! And she handled it so much better than I would have - we’d be in civil court after the refusal for refund - especially with the plagiarism. I really hope Linsey got reported to the BBB and consumer protection.
Dude, WHAT. You could walk into just about any tattoo shop and get either of those examples done BEAUTIFULLY, for a fraction of this, freaking wild.
I was considering choosing this shop for my first tattoo. They are close to my home (they’re in Cambridge Ontario) and I like this style of work. Having to pay this amount of money and being scammed like this would’ve ruined my chances of paying for university. Paying half of my yearly income for a tattoo is insane
BULLET. DODGED.
Omg, that's where the tattoo artist is?? That's where my grandparents live, I've probably seen the storefront and never even knew 😱 Such a small, small world sometimes.
They're in Canada??? I don't live far from Cambridge, I can't believe this scam artist is from here 😭😤
Lmao I’ve been to lucid tattoos and I was tattooed by her apprentice, they specifically said they had a free touch up policy within a year and after 3 months I asked for my touch up and they said I needed to pay the shop minimum per hour….. like WHAT
Glad you didn't end up going. Hope this shop closes down eventually so she won't scam anyone else.
Amazing video.
iNabber has a really good way of getting little worms in my brain over certain topics and they just never leave, love it always
Have you looked into podcasts?
But it’s never over $40
Tbh every tattoo shop I’ve looked at had a minimum price significantly over $40, more like $75 or so
most shop minimum prices are $80+ so
5 years ago (my last tattoo done professionally), $50 bucks was the minimum, if it was smaller in size. It's probably gone up to 75 by now.
Just because it's legal, it doesn't make it right
i wish i could relive the first moment i saw that stolen fox sketch that costed more than my monthly paycheck. it was a wild experience 😭
Me too girl, me too!

This is why I love my tattoo artist. They're skilled, light handed, and incredibly kind. Im happy with both my tattoos I got from them.
Geez I was going to get a tattoo recently, but life keeps getting in the way. All that I was going to be charged before the appointment was a $100 booking fee, which is pretty standard for my area. The idea of paying $6000 for any tattoo that size is outrageous.
In case no ones said it yet, a little history lesson on why every scandal is called "Something-gate"
Picture it, the beautiful Washington District of Columbia (D.C), 1972, the Vietnam war was drawing to a close in a few years (finally, everyone sighed patriotically), Godfather was premiering in theaters, the Olympics were hosted in Germany and apparently it was the debut at McDonalds of the Egg McMuffin and the invention of the delicious ice tea drink, Snapple, what a time it was.
It was ALSO the time of the administration of President Richard Nixon, also nicknamed 'Tricky Dick', he was the republican candidate, was very well loved (and controversial) president at the time, apparently was responsible for the most desegregation of schools in the country at the time, which is pretty cool, and was applauded for pulling troops out of Vietnam (though i'm sure everyone has different thoughts on THAT)
BUT one dark and stormy night on June 17th, (maybe it wasn't that stormy it was june....) there they were lurking in the dark, agents of chaos, thieves and swine, breaking and entering into Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington DC, Watergate Office Building.
A burglary, all 5 of the perps were arrested and after a subsequent investigation by the DOJ, connected the cash to (dun dun dun) The Committee for the Re-Election of the President! CRP, or CREEP as it was often mocked.
Very sus, the investigation and revelations found during the trials of the burglars all lead the House and Senate to create the 'U.S Senate Watergate Committee.'
It was the biggest scandal in decades, a giant rabbit hole of wiretapping, money laundering, political sabotage, hearings from key members of the administration, probing into the white house, impeachment, some of the best pieces of investigative journalism in history and the kidnapping of Martha Mitchell (that story is insane all by itself) then all of the trials being aired LIVE on PBS, free entertainment, the American people felt as if they were all involved, everyone had an opinion about the scandal.
Not only did it seem like yes, The Nixon administration was very much involved in the Watergate burglary, and then subsequently broke many laws to cover the whole thing up, but the man was also just a general asshole and didn't even like his own voters and beat the shit out of his dogs (literally why even have a dog, Dick?)
He later resigned in light of the House commencing an impeachment process, officially for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and Contempt of Congress. He was the only president to have resigned from office and was later pardoned by his successor President Gerald Ford (nobody liked that.)
So there you have it! Watergate is now synonymous with any scandal because it was the name of the building where the burglary took place, it was HUGE and was honestly just good fun to watch while it lasted. I fucking love everything to do with Watergate because its literally a conspiracy that turned out to be TRUE.
also everyone should watch the movie Dick its the fucking best.
lol thank you for this! saved me a google and was probably more entertaining than anything i'd find if i did lmao
Now onto my personal experiences with permanent needle therapy:
I have 7 tattoos so far, but I've never had an artist design one for me so I don't know if the shop I go to charges for that.
